My Human Side: Promise
by Cheza
Kaeleigh woke once, just before dawn. Panic took her as she realized she was surrounded by darkness. In a frenzy, she thrashed for a moment before realizing that the pillow had fallen over her head. Calming, she pushed it away and peeked out from under her covers. The room was lit with the grayish light of pre-dawn. Her heart was still pounding as she looked around the room for any sign of danger. Instead, her eyes rested on Spike. The platinum blonde was sleeping lightly in his chair. Closing her eyes, she settled back into her makeshift bed. She smiled contentedly as she drifted back into sleep for a few more hours.
When her breathing had become slow and regular again, Spike opened his eyes. He’d been awake all night, but strangely not in the mood for conversation with the young slayer-in-waiting. He could feel the dawn approaching, light wasn’t more than an hour away. He stood and shook himself out, releasing the kinks from sitting still so long. He’d kept his promise, he’d stayed until light. He looked down at the sleeping girl, her newly blackened hair strewn about the pillowcase, a soft smile across her face. His facial expression quirked, and crossing his arms, he slowly sat back down. He could afford to stay until the sun came up. It wasn’t like he had anyone waiting on him downstairs in his cold, lonely basement bunker.
