My Human Side: Breakdown
by Cheza
“Ian? Is it really you?” Kaeleigh whispered, her hopes soaring. “Of course it is.” He replied. There could be no mistaking his sweet Brit voice. “But how?” She breathed, barley believing that he was really there. This had to be a dream, some higher power screwing with her. Slowly, she reached out to touch him. She let out a startled gasp when he jerked back away from her. Ian had never flinched from her touch before.
“Ian, what’s going on?” She asked him, softly but desperately. “Are you just a dream?” Her eyes were welling up with tears. She should have known better than to- “No, I’m not a dream Kae. But I’m not really here either.” It took her a moment to understand. When she did, she slumped against the back of the counch with a sob. “So you really are de...de..” She couldn’t say the word, not to him. He nodded gravely. “I am. I fought my way back to see you, Kaeleigh. One last time. I had to make sure that you were okay. And oh, my dear girl, I needed to tell you...”
She leaned forward, drawn to him by the mutual pain they obviously shared at the loss of one another. “What is it? What do you need to tell me?” She asked in a heavy whisper. Whatever it is, must be important for him to come from the other side, she thought. “It hurts me to have to say these things to you, I want you to know that. I would never intentionally hurt you. Its going to be hard for you, but I need you to trust me, and what I’m about to say.” Every nerve in her body had tensed, she’d never heard him talk of such things before. She didn’t like it.
He continued “Kaeleigh...you will never be the Slayer.” His voice carried such authority that there could be no doubt in her mind. “I don’t care about that.” She answered honestly. The only reason she’d ever wanted to become the Slayer was to keep Ian with her, and now, he was gone, ripped away from her forever. “There’s more. Those men who attacked us, The Bringers, there are more of them. They work for an agent called The First. I assume you already know this?” He asked. She nodded “Mr. Giles told me.” “Right.” Ian nodded. “But I bet he didn’t tell you this. The Slayer is gathering all the potentials to her, to build an army to fight The First. But Kae, I know. You cannot defeat the first. If you try...you will die.”
A cold shiver overtook her then, and she began to shake violently. “Ian, why would you say something like that?” Her voice betrayed the hurt she felt at his words. Had he no faith in her at all? “Oh, dear, it isn’t like that.” He moved as if to hug her, then stopped, as if remembering that he couldn’t. “It’s just that in Death, you know things. And I know, that if you stay here, if you fight for the Slayer, you will die. In fact, if you run, more Bringers will only chase you down. There are multiple paths the future could take, and I have seen them all. None end well.”
A panic was rising slowly through the chill. She was only seventeen. She couldn’t die. And yet, a deep, dark part of herself asked, what did she have to live for? Ian was her everything, and she knew she wouldn’t ever be the Slayer, so what did she have to live for? After thinking for a few moments more, she turned her gaze back to him. “What should I do?” She asked.
