A New Hero: They Were Once...

by Angel_Forever

Robby woke up on the couch the next mourning and Connor was no where to be seen. Not really caring she went into the kitchen to get what was left of the food they'd bough yesterday. She went back to the couch after grabbing a box of Twinkies and turned the T.V. on.

Connor walked silently down the halls of the hotel half not wanting to go to the lobby where Robby was already awake. She was here to get rid of Cordelia, that was it. Not to be his friend or anything else for that matter.

He asended the stairs and saw her mezmorized by whatever it was she was watching. He couldn't help but smile, she really was something else.

"Connor?" she knew it was him without looking up, she just didn't get why he'd been staring at her.

"Yeah?"

"Why are you staring at me?"

"I wasn't staring."

"Okay, why were you looking at me completely blanked out?"

"I was...I was thinking and I guess I was looking at you without noticing..."

'Please god let her buy it!'

Robby shrugged, "Whatever."

Connor sighed with relief and joined her on the couch, "What's on?"

"I was watching the news. Wanted to see if what's her face has done any more damage."

"Cordelia."

"I knew that."

"Then why didn't you say it?"

"If I'm going to kill a human I prefer to know as little about them before they were evil as possible."

"Why?"

"It helps me to forget that they were good. Same reason I don't do much research on the vampires I'm hunting."

"Vampires aren't human."

"They were once."

Connor was about to tell her that they were nothing but souless monsters when he saw the look of regret and sadness in her eyes, "Are...are you alright."

"I'm fine."

"You don't look..."

"I said I'm fine."

They sat in silence for over two hours. Connor finally worked up the courage to ask,

"Why?"

"Huh?

"Why are you doing this?"

"What?"

"Hunting, slaying, fighting. You became a Slayer a year ago and you've been fighting your whole life. Why?"

Robby looked away from him. No one had ever asked her that. Not Dawn, not Buffy, not even Faith. Why did she fight? She'd been asking herself that same questions since she was four years old. The answer was simple and complicated at the same time. And it was one she was not about to share.

"Why I fight is nobody's business but my own."

"I'd like to know."

"I'll bet you would," putting up the wall that had blocked out so many people she buried her feelings as deep as they would go. Right where they belonged.

She got up and went over to the desk before he could argue. A pang of guilt hit her stomach at the harshness of her voice but she ignored it. Nothing was worth digging up those memorys.

Nothing...

She picked up the phone and dialed the number Wesley had left.
