April Rain: Chapter 2
by orchid17
It was Tuesday night and the café couldn’t have been less inviting. April leaned gently on the front counter, resting her chin on her hand. There wasn’t a single customer and there hadn’t been one for nearly an hour. The heavy rain didn’t help to brighten her mood.
It was the middle of summer, nearing August and April still had made a single friend. Her mother’s decision to move to Sunnydale hadn’t been a devastating blow. April didn’t fit in her old neighborhood and so far she wasn’t fitting in too well here either.
“Celia!” she called to her coworker that was holed up in the back office. “Would you mind if I took off? I’ve still got tons of unpacking to do and there isn’t anyone—“
Just as the words left her lips, the door swung open. April sighed and silently cursed whoever had the indecency to intrude when she was ready to go home. Wasn’t it very unnatural to have coffee at eleven o’clock in the evening anyway?
The two customers looked like average kids you would see around town. In fact, April could have sworn she’d seen the redheaded girl in before. They were quiet, ordering only single cups of black coffee. They took a table in the corner and huddled down to talk.
Although they were making a valiant effort to keep their voices hushed, April could make out most of what they were saying. Unintentionally, she began to eavesdrop.
“There isn’t anything that we can do now Xander,” the redhead said with anger. “She’s gone for good this time and there will be a new slayer. We’ve got to be ready.”
Xander, looked crestfallen as he replied, “No, Buffy’s died before and she always came back. We’re gonna find a way to fix this.”
April swallowed, unsure of what to think of the information she’d just heard. It seemed illogical and damn near impossible that they were actually talking about a person coming back from the dead. With reservations, she decided to keep her nose out of other people’s business. After all, she really just wanted to fit in.
