Mayers - Series 1: 101: Beyond – Act 4

. . . Gypsy slowly moved for the crossbow. Talon shot him a look.

“Hold it Vampire,” He snapped, “Unless you want Girl Friday vaporized in front of you you’re going to say right where you are.”

“Don’t think this is over Talon!”

Talon placed his hand on Shona’s stomach. It started to glow and draw energy from her.

“Actually I think this is the dictionary definition of over,” he said.

He turned and smiled at Shona who was slowly loosing consciousness.

“So sorry we didn’t get to know each other Girl Friday.” He said menacingly

With difficulty Shona looked at Talon.

“What in the hell did you call me?” She asked

Talon moved in closer to Shona.

“Girl Friday.” He repeated

Shona frowned. She swung out with her foot and caught talon in the groin. Talon dropped Shona then dropped to the floor. Shona rolled backwards and bounced up onto her feet next to Gypsy. Gypsy looked at her curiously.

“How did you know that was going to work?” he asked

“Guy rule number one,” Shona replied picking up the crossbow and aiming it, “Don’t matter how powerful the man, kick ‘em in the balls and they all go down the same way.”

Gypsy gave Shona a worried look as he covered his groin.

“I’m not standing near you any more.” He replied

Talon slowly climbed back up onto his feet.

“You insolent bitch!” he exclaimed

Shona pumped the crossbow loading the first arrow.

“You be watching that mouth of yours before I start to use it as target practice!” Shona replied

Talon looked at Shona and laughed.

“You have no idea the power I hold, the power you hold.”

Shona rolled her eyes.

“Oh my god you’re one of them.” she said annoyed

“One of which?”

“A talker,” Shona explained, “guy who stands around wasting fightin’ time yakkin’”

Again Talon laughed.

“You do have a certain charm Miss Mayers I’ll give you that. It’s a shame I’m going to have to drain you we could have been good friends.”

“Drain me what the hell are you talkin’ about?”

“Talon leeches rift energy from others,” Aurora explained, “adding it to his own making him stronger.”

Shona looked over to the former Power That Be.

“Explain to me how that’s a bad thing?”

“The person or thing that has been drained reverts back to what it was. In Gypsy’s he would become a murderous vampire again and in your case you would become dead.”

Shona just blinked at Aurora.

“Okay . . . now I’m seein’ the bad thing.”

Talon rubbed his hands and walked over to the group.

“Now that the formal part of the proceedings has concluded it’s time to move onto the gratuitous violence and bloodshed.” He said

Shona looked back over Talon.

“Fine by me,” she said.

“You really think you can beat me don’t you?”

Shona shrugged.

“Gave up thinkin’ a long time ago bad for my health.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

It was then he noticed Shona’s smiled.

“I’d be more worried about him then me.”

Talon turned just as Gypsy smashed a chair over his head. Gypsy had managed to slip away from the group after Talon focused his concentration to Shona he grabbed the chair and find his moment. While Talon was recovering from the shock Shona kicked him in the stomach at full strength. Talon flew back, smashed through the wall, rolled over the bar and skidded across the dance floor. Shona watched this stunned.

“Whoa,” she said, “aint done that before.”

“It’s part of being a rifter,” Gypsy replied as they moved onto the dance floor, “you don’t know what’s gonna happen next.”

Shona looked at the vampire curiously. Gypsy shrugged.

“It’s a little name I cooked up for us, you know, people who have been affected by the rift.”

Shona shook her head in disappointment and walked off.

“What?” he asked

Gypsy caught up with Shona and they both stood in front of Talon. The rich boy jumped up quickly and glared at them. Like before he surrounded himself with red energy and formed energy balls in his hands. He tossed them. Shona dodged them both efficiently and charged up to talon. She kneed him in the stomach then caught him with and upper cut followed by a spinning back kick. Again talon flew back against the side wall. Shona stumbled slightly and Gypsy caught her before she fell.

“Easy,” gypsy said, “he’s surrounding himself with rift energy. Touch him for too long and you’ll be bled dry.”

“Man,’ she exclaimed, “it felt like my soul was being hovered out.”

“It’ll pass. Talon needs to drain you completely to claim the power.”

“What’s the plan?” she asked as she regained her footing

“Well we need to . . .”

Gypsy was hit by an energy ball. He flew back and slammed hard into the opposite wall. Not wasting time Shona pulled off the crossbow she slung over he back before they moved into the club and started to fire. Talon deflected all ten and threw a second energy ball hitting Shona square in the chest. She sailed back hitting the wall and dropping down next to Gypsy.

“This guy’s to strong.” Shona exclaimed

“Now you know why I suggested the running.” Gypsy replied

“There must be somethin’”

“I’ve tried,” Gypsy replied in desperation, “I’ve tried fighting him, I tried magic, and the only thing that worked was running come on.”

Gypsy got to his feet and took Shona by the hand. They stopped as a spark of red energy jumped between them. For the longest time they both stood and stared at each other both feeling the same sensation and both not knowing what it means. Talon looked at the both of them cautiously. He formed another energy ball and tossed it. It hit them both dissipating on impact having no effect.

“What in the world?” he asked

Slowly Shona and Gypsy looked over to Talon. They both raised their free hands and Talon flew back against the side wall unable to move. The red energy around his body began to disappear until all that was left was Talon. He dropped to the floor physically shaken. Shona and Gypsy let go of each other and shook of the experience. Shona looked over to Gypsy

“Let’s not be a habit of that.” she said

“Deal,” Gypsy replied still confused about what just happened

Talon slowly climbed back up onto his feet and glared at the both of them. He tried to form another energy ball but found that he couldn’t. Shona folded her arms amused.

“Aww did somebody have a black out?” She asked, “Maybe some internal bleeding would make you feel better.”

Talon snarled.

“I’m not through with you two yet!” he exclaimed as he rushed out the door.

“I like him, “Shona said as they walked over to the bar, “he’s funny.”

“But it doesn’t make him any less dangerous,” Gypsy said, “Shona we need to talk about what just happened.”

“Natural opposites,” Aurora said from the doorway, “Like an electric current you two were stronger when you were physically connected.”

Gypsy turned and looked at Aurora annoyed.

“You mean you knew about this?”

“No,” Aurora replied, “It just stands to reason.”

Gypsy rolled his eyes.

“That’s it I’m out of here you can give your crazy circus act to someone else.”

Gypsy turned to leave but was stopped by Shona

“No you aint.” She said softly

Gypsy said curiously

“What?”

“If the rift did this to us what the hell do you think it’s gonna do to other people,” Shona snapped, “I say we go after it.”

“This is insane Shona the wonder twins over there don’t even know how to seal it!”

“They’ll work it out.”

Gypsy folded his hands.

“Oh yeah? And how do you know that?”

“Don’t chase after somebody across half the country unless you’re sure.”

Gypsy looked from Whistler and Aurora to Shona.

“It’s not as simple as that.”

Shona stood up.

“Then I’ll make it simple,” Shona replied, “That thing is evil, I fight evil, can’t make it any more simple then that.”

Gypsy thought about this. All this time he considered it a losing fight with no information but Shona’s simple approach puts it in a new light. He looked over to her.

“What makes you think we can do this?”

“Already told you I don’t think. Bad for my health.”

Gypsy smiled at the woman’s honesty.

“Alright I’m in,” Gypsy said then turned to Aurora and Whistler, “You two better come up with something.”

“Don’t worry kid we got all the bases covered.” Whistler replied, “You’ll have your answer in no time.”

“Meanwhile me and fang boy here are on clean up.” Shona replied

“It sounds like we have ourselves a plan.” Aurora said

“Don’t get to excited,” Gypsy replied, “if you two come back to us with nothing I’m leaving and you’re not coming after me this time.”

“Sound’s fair.”

Shona tapped Gypsy on the arm.

“Let’s load up,” Shona said, “don’t wanna be hanging around if . . .”

Suddenly both Shona and stop. They lean heavily against the bar.

“You feel that?” Gypsy asked

“Yeah,” Shona replied, “What the hell was it?”

“The rift.”

“Feels like it’s moving up north.”

Gypsy looked at Whistler and Aurora one last time.

“Then what are we waiting for?”

Shona threw in the last bag of weapons into the back of Gypsy’s station wagon.

“First thing we’re gonna do is get a new car.” Shona said

Gypsy looked at her in shock

“What?” he exclaimed, “This baby’s kept me alive for half a century.”

“That’s my point. Only thing holdin’ it together is the rust.”

“Hey! She maybe old but Sarah-May has a few surprises in her still.”

Shona stopped loading and stared at the vampire.

“You named the car?”

“Had to,” Gypsy replied rubbing the roof, “Me and Sarah-May have a special relationship.”

“You two wanna be alone?”

Gypsy shot Shona a look. Shona loaded in the last back and closed the hatch.

“Alright we’re ready to go.”

Gypsy moved around to the driver’s side.

“So are you sure about this whole chasing down the rift thing we could be on the road for a while.”

“Got anything better to do?”

Gypsy thought.

“Not really.” He replied

Shona shrugged and climbed into the car. Giving her a brief smile Gypsy did the same. From the doorway of the club Aurora and Whistler watched as the black station wagon pulled away from the curb and sped off.

“You sure it was a good idea not telling them.” Whistler commented

“They don’t need to know yet,” Aurora replied, “it would have only burdened them unnecessarily.”
