Chapter 1 - Coming Back For More
The big day was coming up, the day she had expected to never come. Yet, there it was, around the corner. ‘Strange how it all works out’, she thought, staring up at the pompous building in front of her. ‘Why are evil things always so show-off-y?’
She’d tried to explain it to the Immortal, why she had to do this. To be able to move on, she’d to see him one last time. Because after the big day, she knew it was going to be over. Forever. Final. After that, the hope she had carried for so many years would vanish. After the big day, the Immortal - a.k.a. David - would be her everything. She wouldn’t do the same mistake as she had done with Riley. Spike. She would give David her heart. Not just her body.
David hadn’t been happy, but he understood. That was one of the reasons why she had said yes, he understood things most people didn’t. Okay, he had been around a hell of a lot longer than most people. Buffy had given up on men that didn’t remember the Industrial Revolution. Older guys were her thing. Well, they used to be, before she decided to settle for one.
But to do that, she had to see him one last time. And take her heart back so she could give it to someone else.
The last time she’d seen him was in Sunnydale and that meeting had been brief. Still, she had kissed him and told him that she still was there, available for him sometime in the future. A lot can happen in a year.
“You sure about this?” Lizzie said, “Mean, isn’t it a bit…cruel?”
Buffy turned towards her friends, suddenly reminded of her presence. She’d brought one of her most trusted fellow slayers with her, Lizzie, who was born New Yorker and also located in Rome. In many ways, Lizzie reminded her of Faith, which was kind of weird considering how she felt about the Dark Slayer - a nickname Faith had gotten in one of Andrew’s many stories and it had stuck ever since. Even in Buffy’s mind, even though she didn’t like admitting it.
What Faith was doing right now, Buffy didn’t really know. Even if they had defeated the First together, they’d never been close. Faith had run away with Wood to someplace where the government wouldn’t find her and her calls to check in with Slayer Central were scarce.
“Huh?” Buffy shook her head, trying to recall what Lizzie’d just said. “What’s cruel?”
“Let’s see here, shall we?” An ironic smile reached Lizzie’s mouth and eyes, “Bursting in on your ex just to tell him you’re getting married, for one thing?”
Lizzie was partially right, Buffy knew that, but she didn’t get it. No one was ever going to get it. Many had tried to, really tried to understand. Like, Willow. She had tried so hard relating to Buffy and Angel’s relationship her head had almost exploded. Buffy appreciated the effort, but knew it was a lost cause. So if Willow, Buffy’s best friend since almost 10 years, hadn’t been able to relate - she doubted that Lizzie was going to.
“Don’t look at me like that, Summers” Lizzie snorted. Lizzie was - just like Faith and Buffy - one of the older slayers, being 27. That was both good and bad. Good because she had the courage to question Buffy unlike many of the younger ones. Bad because of the very same reason. It was hard having someone question you when you, yourself weren’t really sure of what you were doing.
“How am I looking at you?”
“Like I’m stupid. I’m not. We all have exes, people we haven’t really gotten over. But this is not the way to move on. Best thing is to just let it be, stirring up old feelings…never good.”
“Then why the hell did you agree to go with me here, huh?” Buffy crossed her arms over her chest, looking incredibly grim for a woman in her twenties.
“Well, sister, I was eager to get back to the states. Not wanna miss an opportunity to see the other coast. Plus, I was kinda hoping to talk you out of this ‘see him to move on’ crap. Trust me on this one, just get over it by not seeing him.” Lizzie made a 180 degree turn, almost crashing into a man walking down the same street, ready to walk away from there. Buffy quickly reached for her arm.
“Lizzie, please.” There was a streak of desperation in her voice that made Lizzie cringle.
“Buffy, I love you like pancakes, but this is insane. What about David, huh? Did you even think of him on the flight here?!” Lizzie liked David. Everyone did and the thought of Buffy flushing him down the toilet because of some stupid guy -vampire- that had left her five years ago was ridiculous.
Buffy raised her arms, “God, it’s because of David I’m here!”
“Is it?!”
“Yeah, it is. So get your ass over here, I’ll talk to him for like 10 minutes tops and then you’ll help me out of there and then it’s over. Okay?”
Lizzie groaned.
“Fine, fine. You owe me big time, you know. A new axe at least.”
Buffy hugged her friend’s arm, “I’ll give you a sword.”
Lizzie stopped in her tracks, “Since when did we stop wishing for clothes?”
