Love, Lies, and Apple Pie: Tacos, Corvets, and Past Events

by littlewiccan

Dawn sat in the back seat of the car staring out the window as Connor drove down the highway. She had her sunglasses on and her hair was pushed back in the wind because Connor had decided to ride with the top down. Fred sat in the passenger seat next to him, no one talked. It had been like this for at least 40 minutes and the silence was driving Dawn insane.

Dawn moved forward in her seat and into the front of the car where she began to fiddle with the radio, “Sorry this silence it too much.”

Dawn stopped when she heard a familiar catchy pop tune on the radio and raised the volume slightly. Satisfied she leaned back into her seat.

“Dawn I know this is awkward but….” Connor began.

“Don’t,” Dawn cut in, “Please don’t.”

Fred looked at the girl Connor had introduced to her at Dawn and gave her a small smile but Dawn just turned away from her ignoring the simple gesture.

“Connor, can you pull over at that gas station. I’m craving a taco,” Fred said, making up an excuse so she could talk to Dawn alone.

“Sure, I need gas anyway,” Connor said, pulling into the gas station. HE then proceeded to fill the car with gas and then entered the convenient gas station mini mart to pay and find a taco.

“He loves you,” Fred told her. Dawn’s head shot up at the remark, “And you love him.”

“But he’ll marry you.”

Fred shook her head, “I don’t want to marry Connor.”

“You don’t?”

“No, I don’t love him. I did but….I thought I’d love him forever. I guess forever doesn’t last as long as it use to. Besides I met someone else.”

“Who?”

“His name’s Gunn. Charles Gunn, he’s a year older.”

“Does Connor know?”

Fred shook her head.

“And does Gunn know about Connor about your….” Dawn started.

“No, I don’t even know if I want to have it.”

“You want an abortion?”

“Maybe, I’ve thought about it. I even made it as far as the center but I couldn’t do it. It felt….it didn’t feel right but I don’t know things would be so much easier.”

“No they wouldn’t be. It would still be complicated. It would still be messy.”

“What would you do?”

“I don’t know,” Dawn said. She looked over and saw Connor making his way towards the car.

“Don’t be so hard on him,” Fred said, “He means well. He’s scared.”

“We all are,” Dawn said.

“Hey, they didn’t have tacos but they did have choco tacos,” Connor said, handing one to Fred and then one to Dawn.

“Choco tacos will do,” Fred said, removing the shiny silver foiling from her frozen treat.

Dawn looked down at the cold package when she was younger she would always run out to the ice cream truck and it would make her so happy. Things so much simpler then.

“Dawn, earth to Dawn,” Connor said, waving his hand in front of her face.

“Huh?”

“What’s wrong, don’t you like choco tacos?” Fred asked.

“I’m not hungry.”

“When’s the last time you ate?” Connor asked, concerned.

“I don’t remember.”

“That usually means you’re due,” Connor said, “If there’s something else you want I can go get it.”

Dawn looked at him. He was trying so hard to make everyone happy, to get them all home, and to stay calm. Fred’s right, I may be mad at him but it’s not like what he did was wrong and he didn’t want to hurt me, I should give him a break, “I love choco tacos.”

Dawn smiled and removed the wrapping, exposing the frozen ice cream taco and biting into it.
