The Night-Hawk - Series 1: 103: Into the fold – Act 2
by Timan
“So you’re telling us the men just cam out of nowhere?” The detective asked
Brett nodded. He had an ice pack on his head where the rifle made impact. The detective consulted his notes frowning.
“Mr. Carpenter we have several other witnesses that claim you and Miss Whitfield were talking to the men before it kidnapping.”
Brett thought for a moment.
“Pen was asking them why they were there.” He replied
“That’s all?”
Brett shot the detective an annoyed look.
“Hey! I was to busy BEING HIT IN THE HEAD WITH A RIFLE!” he snapped
“Alright, Alright,” The detective replied, “If you remember anything give me a call.”
He hands Brett his card. One of the other officers gestures the detective over to the body leaving the hacker alone. A moment later the Night-Hawk swooped out of the sky and landed on a tree nearby. From around the corner The Wanderer and Megan rush out and approach him.
“What the hell happened?” The Wanderer asked
Brett motioned to move away from the detective and the group walks around the corner. Brett looked at the both of them seriously
“It was those council guys,” Brett replied, “they shot her with some kind of drug then threw her into a van.”
“I knew I couldn’t trust that Brant.” The Wanderer replied
“What are we going to do?” Megan asked
“They said that they are going to take her back to England.”
The Wanderer pondered.
“We got to stop them some how before they do.” he replied
The black van motored down the road quickly. In the back Vic and Brant sat quietly while Penny lay unconscious on the floor. In the front Vic’s team mates, Jenkins and Peterson, kept a vigil eye on the road. Vic tilted his head slightly as he looked the champion up and down.
“She’s not a bad lookin’ bird.” Vic commented, “Definitely better lookin’ then some of the other slayers we’ve been chasing.”
Brant looked up at the enforcer in disgust. Vic slid over next to Penny and started to toy with the top button of her shirt.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Brant yelled
“I’m gonna see if she’s a big girl if you know what I mean.”
Slowly he began to unbutton her shirt until Brant rushed over and stopped him.
“I think you’ve done enough to this woman.”
Vic looked at him for a moment then slid back to the front of the van. Quickly Brant buttoned her shirt back up and returned to his sitting position. Vic watched him.
“Must be hard to sit,” he commented, “you know, with that carrot up your arse and all.”
“I simply want to get this done.”
“Keep your knickers on our flight isn’t for a couple of days.”
Brant folded his arms impatiently.
“The sooner this is over the better.”
“Don’t worry Brant after I’m done we wont be seeing each other ever again.”
At the mansion The Wanderer, Megan and Brett tried to work out their next move. Brett leaned back in a chair while The Wanderer tended to his head wound. Megan worked on her laptop while she scribbled down some notes.
“They couldn’t have gone far,” Megan commented, “Black van that size does kinda stick out.”
“Well Hope’s been out most of the afternoon trying to find it but so far no luck.”
The Wanderer checked the lump Brett’s forehead.
“OW!” Brett exclaimed, “Hey!”
“Sorry I had to check,” The Wanderer replied, “you might have a concussion.”
“Ya think?” Brett snapped at him
Brett put the icepack back on his head while The Wanderer joined Megan at her laptop.
“What are you working on?” he asked
Megan slipped her pencil behind her ear and pushed up her round framed glasses.
“It’s a tracking program,” she explained, “sorta a combination mapping program / locater spell. I’m going to use it to find Penny.”
The Wanderer looked down at the elaborate setup Megan was using and suddenly felt his age.
“How does it work?” he asked
“Well,” Megan said rubbing her tired eyes, “Slayers put out different energy to humans. This spell homes in on it and displays it on screen.”
“Kind of like a mystical bug huh?”
“Yeah something like that. I designed it for when my coven was trapping demons.”
“Let’s hope those council guys haven’t skipped town yet.”
“I don’t understand,” Brett said painfully, “why those guys wanted Penny anyway?”
“They’ve been slayerless for two years I guess they got kinda antsy.” Megan replied
Brett gave Megan a frustrated confused look.
“Okay, paranormal virgin here, can you break it down into something I can understand?”
Megan and The Wanderer looked at each other. She stopped what she was doing and they both wandered over to where Brett was resting.
“Alright I’ll give you slayer history 101,” Megan said, “for thousand of years there’s been a line of female warriors called vampire slayers. The first was created by combining a human and a demon. For those thousands of years every slayer had a watcher who trained the slayer to fight vampires and demons.” Megan said
“Alright but that still doesn’t explain lot, stock and two smoking barrels back there.”
“Things changed a few decades ago when a witch named Willow cast a spell on a magic weapon activation all of the slayers at once. All of them with the same power and strength as the original slayer.” The Wanderer continued, “Everything was going along great until this law firm named Wolfram and Hart created this slayer named Rebecca. She didn’t know it at the time but she was gonna have a major influence on the world.”
“Now this is where things get a little tricky to explain,” Megan took over, “See, we’re in a second timeline.”
“You lost me.” Brett replied
“Okay, how can I put this, time has run twice. In the original time line the world was destroyed by a vampire named Angelus who turned the witch who activated all the slayers. She and Angelus found the fragments of a mystical item called the Gem of Amarra. She used it to make all the vampires in the world invulnerable.”
“So the vampires couldn’t be killed?”
“Nope,” Megan continued, “This caused mega panic and slayers started to drop left and right.”
“After a few years of this all the humans were forced to live in colonies just to survive.” The Wanderer explained, “Rebecca was the leader of the number seventeen colony. Though she liked to be called Becky then.”
Brett looked at the both of them mystified. This story had no way answered his question
“Still here confused guys.” Brett said, “How does this make a second timeline?”
“Well, in that colony was an old watcher named Rupert Giles. He found out info about an amulet called the Star of Asgeroth which could send people through time. They manage to find it and Becky was sent back to stop his slayer joining with her friends, well, at least that what she thought was going to happen. See, old man Giles had become very bitter and Becky wasn’t the nicest person in the world so he tricked her into bringing supplies back so the witch could give Angelus back his soul.”
“Soul? What would that do?” Brett asked
“Make him good again,” Megan replied, “See Angelus was cursed by gypsy’s years ago and they gave him his soul back. Wolfram and Hart tricked him into giving up his soul by creating a fake prophecy called the Shanshu.”
Brett leaned forward and tried to process the information that he was just given. Between the culture shock and the head injury he was having a hard time dealing with it.
“So let me get this straight. So this Becky went back in time and screwed everything up and that’s how we got a second time line?”
“Not exactly,” The Wanderer explained, “What Becky ended up doing was fixing everything. They ended up using the star to destroy that Vampire-Witch and reset time. Of course the side effect was that they created a hell dimension of this reality.”
Brett looked at the old man even more confused.
“What’s a hell dimension?”
“It’s a place of evil. In our hell dimension the apocalypse still happened and Becky was still the leader of colony 17. But in this reality instead of being the Uber-Slayer she was just a normal one called Rebecca.”
“I don’t think he knows what an uber-slayer is.” Megan mentioned, “In the original time line the slayer power was turned off by the same witch who turned it on. Old Giles tried to save it by using a coven in England to buy transferring into young Becky but when that happened the power kicked in and she became the Uber-Slayer, a girl with three times the power of a normal slayer.”
“So in the hell dimension this uber-slayer still existed,” The Wanderer continued, “Wolfram and Hart tired to bring the apocalypse back by doing this spell called the crossing where they switched the girls causing the dimensions to collapse onto themselves.”
“But this backfired you see,” Megan jumped, “because it turns out that Rebecca was mentioned in this prophecy called the Prophecy of the Divine so when she destroyed the Star of Asgeroth, which is what they used to trade the girls, she became even more powerful person called The Divine One. She went to live with some monks for a while who told her about her destiny then came back and totally kicked Wolfram and Hart asses.”
“But the problem was,” The Wanderer continued, “That when Wolfram and Hart were gone the reminder of their army stormed the Nevada desert and there was this huge battle called the battle of Trinity where most of the slayers died. This cased the powers activation to screw up meaning that the world was left Slayersless. The council became desperate and started to hunt down any lead they had to try and find any survivors of the battle. This is where Penny comes in.”
“Yeah the council has become so anxious to get their hands on slayers that they would do anything to get them. Including kill people.” Megan finished
“Oh my god,” Brett exclaimed, “How do you guys know all this?”
Megan shrugged.
“I’m a Techno-Pagan. We trawl the net for the weird. I found this story out on the Council of Watchers server. Those guys might be good with demons and stuff but they’re very bad with firewalls.” Megan replied
“As for myself you travel around long enough you can find out almost anything.” The Wanderer concluded, “Which brings us back to our problem. We need to get Penny away from those men.”
“I can get into the police database,” Brett said as he got to his feet, “See if they have any info on our van in black.”
“I keep working on the tracking program.” Megan mentioned
“Good,” the wanderer replied, “We still need to work out how they’re going to get Pen out of the country.”
“They’re going to do it by plane.” A voice said from the doorway
The group turn to see Brant standing in the doorway clutching a wound in his stomach. He looked very pale and liable to collapse at any moment.
“They chartered a cargo Jet that’s going to leave in a couple of days.” Brant continued
Brant slipped from the doorway. But The Wanderer managed to move in and catch him. He helped him to the bed in the corner and checked his wound.
“What happened?” The Wanderer asked
Brant grimaced with pain.
“That’s a rather long story.” he replied
