Time to Sing: Thunder Road
by Fighter78
~the song "Thunder Road" belongs to Bruce Springsteen
“So what’s up with him?” Angel asked as he came into the lab.
“Nothing really other than he had some sort of drug that I’m still trying to pin point. He should be alright though.” Fred said and they started to hear moaning coming from the table Spike was laying on.
“Morning.” Fred said cheerfully as she came over to Spike’s side.
“What happened?” Spike asked groggily.
“What’s the last thing you remember?” Fred asked looking concerned.
“Harmony singing something about return to sender and then you complained about singing a response and then after that it’s all a blur. Kinda felt the 60s.” Spike said smiling a little.
“So you don’t remember calling me baby?” Angel asked cautiously.
“What the bloody heck are you talking about. Why in the world would I call you baby?” Spike asked completely confused.
“In the song you sang before you passed out you sang about someone you called baby.” Angel explained.
“I’ve only got two people I’ve used that term for and that’s Dru and Buffy.” Spike said a little weired out by the fact Angel had thought he had called him baby.
“Ok.” Was all Angel said.
“Spike, you haven’t been taking any drugs have you?” Fred asked
“Nope, don’t think so, pretty drug free, well other than a cigarette here and there but that’s about it on the drugs.” Spike said
“I was just wondering because I found some drugs in your blood and we think that that may have something do with it.” Fred said some of her cheeriness gone.
“Why would there be drugs in my blood?” Spike asked confused.
“That’s what we’re trying to find out.” Fred said as she walked over to a table with some stuff on it.
“If somebody slipped me something they are so going to get it.” Spike threatened.
“Even if they’re human?” Angel questioned.
“I didn’t say I was going to kill them I just said they were going to get it. You’ve got to listen up more, Peaches.” Spike said smiling.
“Well while you figure out what is wrong with me I’m going to go out. Can I borrow a ride, Angel?” Spike asked as he got up from the examination table.
“Where are you going?” Angel asked wanting to know where one of his cars was headed.
“I don’t know. I heard about place that sounded interesting, called ‘Thunder Road’ I believe.” Spike said and suddenly everybody, including Angel, got a look of terror on their face.
“You don’t want to go there, Spike.” Fred said to Spike who was getting a little unnerved by everybody’s looks.
“Why not, luv? Are you worried that I might get a bit beat up or something because if I do it can’t be as bad as what I’ve been through. All I want is a bit of an adrenaline rush.” Spike said looking a little, but only a little, scared himself
“I’ll tell you.” Gunn said in an ominous voice as he came out of the shadows of the lab. It creeped Spike out a little. Suddenly there was the sound of thunder and Gunn began to sing.
The screen door slams
Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me
You can hide `neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero
That's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh come take my hand
Riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
oh Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road, sit tight take hold
Thunder Road
Well I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
>From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free
All the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind, so Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win.
When he was done everybody was looking at him.
“Who’s Mary?” Spike asked a little confused.
“She was the one I loved and I warn any of you that wants to go to Thunder Road don’t go only death awaits you.” Gunn said and then he went back into the shadows. He was really creeping Spike out.
“Well, I guess I’ll just go to the bar then, mate.” Spike said and he left, but not before giving everybody a wary glance.
