Part Three

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The vampire ran to the door. It was locked and he found himself trapped against the wall. Angel backed him into a corner and threatened him with a stake. The vampire looked over at the door, which had just opened and saw his companion standing in the doorway. She saw the stake and what Angel would do with it. She ran in between them, hoping to stop what would happen, but instead received it upon herself. She cried out. The lights turned on a second later. The vampire looked horrified at the sight before him. His lover stood in front of him. She held on to the stake that protruded from her diaphragm. When she looked up at him, her face twisted with anguish. She fell forward and grabbed onto him. He eased her to the ground and held her gently.

The vampire looked up at Angel who looked back at him with a wild stare. He soon refocused his attention to his lover. Her body shook with pain, making him hold her tighter, as if he could stop her from hurting. He began to speak to her.

"Buffy! Buffy talk to me! C'mon don't leave me like this." He pleaded with her. Angel said something, but the vampire ignored it.

She was trying to speak, but her voice came out only in a soft whisper. Before he could make out what it was, someone else entered the room and knelt down beside them.

"What happened?" the person asked.

Upon hearing the voice, the vampire looked up and gasped. It couldn't be! She was gone!

"K-Kayla?" he stammered.

"What? Why are you acting so-" it was then that she saw Buffy and Angel in the room. She looked around shocked for a second, then got her priorities straight, "When I decide to ask for it, you guys better have a damn good explanation for all this."

Kayla had just started to focus on the wound, when the girl spoke.

She said to her lover "W-w-warn th-them."

The vampire suddenly remembered why they were there in the first place.

"Everybody, we gotta get outta here." He said.

When he made a move to pick up his companion, Kayla said, "If you move her now, she could die."

"If we don't get outta here, we're all gonna die. This place is about to blow."

With that, he picked her up and headed for the door, with the others close behind him. The bomb went off just as they got out of range. Angel felt a wave of sadness for his home, which was now an inferno of flames. He then remembered what had happened in the hallway. He went to the vampire who had his lover on the ground. Blood had collected in her mouth. A few more seconds and she would choke on it. Kayla knelt down next to them.

"Put her down." She said. He released her from the half-sitting position that he held her in. Kayla put her hands on the stake, which still went completely through the girl's body. Everyone watched as the stake lit on fire and quickly burned itself away. The hole, which was left there, no longer bled, but the fact remained that it was still a life-threatening problem. Kayla now moved her hands over the girl's throat. The blood drained from it, giving her the ability to breathe again. After she had done this, Kayla lay on the ground beside her, exhausted.

She lay there for a bit and soon said, "This will last her for a little while, but we need to take her somewhere safe."

"Why can't you heal her completely?" asked the vampire.

"I don't have the strength." Kayla answered. She looked at the girl; she was asleep.

"Where can we take her?" said Angel.

"The library." Said Buffy, "We'll be safe there."

The vampire, again, picked up his companion and they all walked to the library to recover. Because of her weakness, Buffy and Angel had to help Kayla walk

"What made you come here?" Angel asked her.

"I knew something was wrong."

"How?"

"Remember when Maggie Butler nearly killed herself on that cart?" she asked.

"Vaguely."

"Before that happened, I got the worst feeling. That's why I didn't want her to get on. I knew something would happen to her, and I was right. Unfortunately, she didn't listen to me and that horse nearly drove her off a cliff."

"Kayla, you're babbling, get to the point." He chided.

Kayla cast him a mean look, "I was just about to. Anyway, about an hour ago, I got the exact same feeling about you two."

"I'm glad you did." Said Buffy.

"So, am I." Added the vampire.

They were lucky to find that the library was empty. They took the girl into one of the back rooms and lay her down on the table. She moaned slightly. The vampire took one of her hands in his.

"You'll be Ok." He said.

She looked him in the face and smiled faintly, "I believe you."

He kissed her softly, then went into the main room to meet the others. He was surprised when he did. He wasn't bombarded with questions as he thought he would be. Instead, he watched the happenings of the room.

Angel lay on a table, looking up at the ceiling. His fingers were through his hair. He let out a long breath as Buffy sat down at the edge of the table. She knew what Angel was thinking; he felt bad, no horrible. He had just stabbed an innocent girl with a stake, a girl who, strangely enough, bore Buffy's face. She took one of his hands from his head and held it tightly.

"Are you Ok?" she asked.

"That could've been you." He said, still staring at the ceiling.

"It was her." Said the vampire, coming down the stairs.

"And you?" asked Angel, sitting up.

"I'm you."

"How?"
