Line of Duty: A slayer

~Nothing's mine except for Katherine. Charles, Mikey, and Mama
Daddy was in the Navy and it was fun sometimes because we got to go different places. I think my favorite place was Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Well it was until the attack. He wasn’t on the USS Arizona but the USS California. He didn’t make it. Mama cried for days after we were told, I did to of course but it was different for her. You see she was Japanese and because of that she lost a lot of her friends. Luckily I didn’t lose my best friend Emily, she was great. We lived in Pearl Harbor for a while until the army came and took us away. It was on the bus ride to the camp that I met a very interesting man.
“Hello miss.” He had said. He had a British accent and he was very young. I could never really tell this to too many people but I had a little bit of a crush on him, but it was only for a short while that I had a crush.
“Hello. My name’s Katherine, what’s yours?” I asked
“Second Lieutenant Charles Rogers.” He said with a smile on his face
.
“Nice to meet you Lieutenant Rogers.” I said politely. Due to Daddy being in the Navy I had always been taught to be respectful to officers.
“Would you and your little brother like a chocolate bar?” He asked as he pulled two Hershey bars out of his bag.
“Thank you.” I said as I took one and handed the other over to my brother Mikey.
“If you’re British what are you doing here in America? Shouldn’t you be fighting over there?” I asked
“I should but I asked to be placed over here. Trust me I’m not a coward, I’ve seen more than enough bloodshed in my life and decided it would be easier if I was over here.” He said and then he told us a story about his Great Great Uncle William who was thought to have disappeared and killed his mum. It wasn’t the happiest story in the world but I liked it.
“They never found him then?” I asked. Mikey was now asleep as was my mom.
“Nope. Some say he became a vampire but not a lot of people believe that one.” He said only half smiling. He would tell me lots of stories about vampires and girls who would fight them. I loved those stories except for the end of some of them when the girl would die. On one of them he said that his Great Great uncle had killed one of them but it was only one. He made the trip to the camp go by fast and once we got there I didn’t want to get off because I would miss his company and stories but he told me we would meet again soon.
One day while we were eating dinner we heard a knock on the door. I answered it and was surprised to see Lieutenant Rogers standing there.
“I told you we would meet again.” He said as he pulled me into a family type hug and then he hugged my mom and brother.
“I missed you.” I said and I meant it too.
“I missed you too now if your mom doesn’t mind I have to talk to you in private.” He said looking at mom who nodded her approval.
“What do you want to talk to me about?” I asked when we were outside. I loved the night it always seemed peaceful.
“You know those stories I told on the way here?” He asked and I nodded yes
“Well they’re all true. Those girls really did exist and my Great Great uncle really is a vampire.” He said solemnly.
“Right. Ok.” I said a little sarcastically. He was freaking me out a little but I could handle it.
“They are and you are one of those girls. You are a vampire slayer and I’m your watcher.” He said. Right then I knew he was telling the truth.
“Are you telling me I have to fight these things?” I said a little scared.
“I’m afraid so. I’ll help you through it though.” He said and I didn’t know what to say so I started walking. We weren’t really supposed to be out this late but since Lieutenant Rogers was in his uniform and I was with him it was all right.
“I know this is a shock to you but we have to start your training right away. You were called awhile ago and I never told you other than tell you stories of past slayers and such.” He said.
“If you’re saying that you have to teach me how to fight well there’s no need. My dad taught me.” I said a little harshly.
“Well it’s good to know you know basic fighting skills but you don’t know how to fight a vampire.” He said and I knew he was right about that.
“So you’ll teach me then?” I asked even though I knew he would. I was beginning to accept that this was what I had to do.
“Of course. Actually two of the guards tonight are vampires so this will give you the chance to practice a little.” He said as he started to walk a little faster.
“Wait are saying I have to kill officers. I can’t do that.” I said scared. I knew that if I killed an officer it would reflect on both mama and daddy, even though he was dead.
“They are already dead and there will be no bodies they will turn to dust. Now come on.” He said and I followed him. The first one I had trouble with, when I thought I had gotten its heart it turned out I missed and he figured out what I was. It was almost like he sensed me. It took the help of Lieutenant Rogers for me to get that one and the second one was a little easier. Lieutenant Rogers was right there were no bodies, just dust.
“Good job.” He said to me as he led me back to my bunk.
“Thank you.” I said. I thought I would have trouble falling asleep because I usually did but I was exhausted from the fight and fell asleep the moment my head hit the pillow.
Lieutenant Rogers, or Colonel Rogers to be exact closed to the leather bound book and put it in the inside of his uniform. It was that time of year where he would come and read her journal entry about the time she met him and found out her destiny. She had lasted five years. She had had only one year out of the camp before she died in well the line of duty, her duty. He put the flowers that he had brought for her on the grave and got up to leave. Her mom and agreed with him on what should be on the stone.
