Apparition 2 - the shadow of Deeth: 1: I am Deeth!

by Timan

Willow and Xander snuggled next to each other on the seats in the lounge area of Sunnydale high. They looked at each other sweetly as they kissed. Across from them Buffy glared at them.

“God, get a room you two!” She said annoyed

“I do have one Buff,” Xander replied, “only; I have to share it with the pool table. Still don’t know how I lost that argument.”

“Should have let me negotiate sweetie.” Willow replied

“It’s not that bad but I can live with out dad’s drunken midnight games every Saturday.”

Buffy smirked. She looked down at her watch then sprung up in shock. Xander and Willow looked at her curiously.

“What’s with the rush?” Xander asked

“I’m so late,” Buffy replied collecting her things, “If I’m not in the library on time for training. Wesley gives me this look.”

“We can’t have that.” Xander replied confused

Buffy smirked then rushed down the hall. Xander then turned back to Willow and smiled.

“So what now?” he asked

Willow smiled. Suddenly she remembered something. Reaching into her pocket she pulled out a small tombstone key ring.

“I got you a present.” She said happily

Xander looked at the present worried.

“Okay. Not sure what you want me to do but I have a feeling that I’m not going to like it.”

“It’s death day!”

“Not making it any better.”

“No silly! Don’t you remember last year? This was the day you died!”

Xander shifted his worried look to his girlfriend.

“And we’re celebrating this because?”

“You came back!” Willow replied throwing her arms around him.

They kiss lightly. Xander looked at the keying again.

“’Spose that’s a good reason.” Xander replied looking at the keying closely.

Willow smiled then looked up at the clock then frowned.

“Shoot! I have to get ready for class!” she exclaimed

Willow quickly jumped to her feet and kissed Xander goodbye. Xander smiled as he watched her dash in her own awkward fashion down the hall. Suddenly about halfway down Willow stopped moving. This worried Xander because she looked like she was in mid run. As Xander got to his feet he noticed that nobody else was moving either. Slowly he walked down into the hallway.

From past experience when you’re the only one moving and nobody else is that usually means something bad was going to happen. It didn’t take Xander look to find this out for down one of the halls a large plume of smoke began to make its way towards him. Xander watched in fear as a hooded figure stepped out holding a scythe. He walked up to Xander. Xander walked back quickly until his back is against the wall. The figure pointed his finger at him.

“Who . . . who are you?” Xander asked

“I . . . am . . . DEETH!” the figure replied in a booming voice

“What do you want with . . . Wait, Deeth?”

“I have come for you’re . . .”

“What’s a Deeth?”

The figure sighed as he lowered his scythe.

“That’s not important,” Deeth replied, “It is time Xander Harolds you must come with me.”

Deeth noticed that Xander was looking at him strangely.

“What?” Deeth asked

“I’m not Xander Harolds,” Xander replied

For a long moment Deeth stared at Xander. A moment later he laid down his scythe and pulled back his hood. Underneath was a thin looking man with curly brown hair and thick rimmed glasses. Some how he seemed less intimidating in this form.

“You sure?” Deeth asked in a nasaly voice

“I think I know my own name.”

From under his cloak Deeth pulled out a clipboard and consulted his notes.

“Oh man!” he said annoyed, “they sent me after the wrong guy again!”

“Um . . . sorry?”

“It’s not your fault,” Deeth replied putting down his clipboard, “you would not believe the middle management problems we’re having in the after life. Anyway, hi I’m Deeth.”

Deeth stuck out his hand and Xander shook it cautiously. Deeth shrugged awkwardly.

“It was supposed to be Death but there was something wrong with my application.” Deeth continued, “Sorry to disturb you.”

Deeth turned and headed back into the cloud checking his notes. About halfway back he stopped and turned back to Xander.

“No, wait, this is you.” Deeth said as he walked back, “I am supposed to collect you.”

This made Xander extremely nervous. Deeth walked back happily.

“Those guys,” he said cheerfully, “they must have pulled the name off the tombstone again. They do that with ghosts.”

“I’m not a ghost,” Xander replied, “I mean I was, but I’m not now.”

Deeth looked at Xander curiously. He prodded him experimentally.

“Weird, says here I have to retrieve a ghost. I’m gonna have to double check this with dispatch.” Deeth said sighing

Deeth turned and started to head back into the cloud. Xander couldn’t believe what just happened.

“Wait! What was supposed to happen?”

Deeth turned and face the confused boy.

“According to this you should still be dead.” he replied
