Lee The Vampire Slayer: You're the Slayer
by adraztea
Waking up outside my own home wasn’t something I did every day. I blinked at the streetlight and sat up. The stairs was cold under me.
“’Morning.”
I turned around, heart beating franticly. A man was sitting on the stairs, bleached blond hair, black leatherjacket, cigarette in his hand.
“Or, well, not really morning,” he said, indicating the darkness around us. “Anyway. You okay?”
It all came back to me. The woods. The attack. The…man, turning into dust. And this man, the one sitting on the stairs with me, telling me that it was a vampire. It hadn’t been a nightmare, then.
“I’m fine,” I said, not really sure if I was. “How did we get here?”
“I carried you, after you passed out. For a Slayer, you’re a bit soft, you know. Should take more than a simple vampire for you to pass out. A major head injury, for starters.”
“What?” I said, feeling confused. “What are you talking about?”
“Oh come on,” he said. “I bet your watcher has explained all this to you already. ‘One girl in all the world’ and all that crap.”
“I have no idea what your talking about. Watcher?”
“You haven’t got one yet? Don’t worry, he’ll come running before you know it. Probably on his way already. They most likely felt you activate last week, just like I did.”
Maybe I had a head injury, after all. What he said didn’t make sense. Activate? And, come to think of it, Slayer? It wasn’t me who had a head injury, it was him. Besides, how did he knew where I lived? He was making me feel very uncomfortable. I got up, walking the rest of the way up the stairs. He got up too, and followed me.
“Well, t-thank you for getting me home. I really should get in, I have a test tomorrow that I haven’t even studied for yet.”
“Right. I should get going, then. I’m Spike, by the way.”
He reached out his hand to me, and I took it. He was so cold! I wondered how long we had been out there.
“Lee,” I said, and he smiled.
“Nice to meet you, Lee. See you around.”
He turned, and walked down the stairs. I watched him as he walked away, then I opened my door and went in.
That night, I had a strange dream. At first, it was just your ordinary “I haven’t studied enough for the test”-dream, with me in the classroom, and the test, filled with strange sums. Every time I tried to do a sum, the numbers changed. When the teacher came to collect the test, he looked at it, then shook his head.
“You’re obviously not ready for this, Slayer,” he said. Then he turned, face all bumpy, eyes yellow, and those sharp fangs ready to bite me. I screamed, and ran away. He followed me down the hall.
“You’re not ready, Slayer, but I bet you taste good anyway!” I ran through the school, screaming for help, but there was no one there. I ran out to the parking lot, it was dark outside, and he followed me. He wasn’t alone any more. There were at least ten other vampires there, surrounding me. Nowhere left to run. I stopped, circling, looking at them as they closed in on me. When they lunged at me, it was as if though everything turned to slow-motion. I saw them coming, and easily landed a kick at one of them, punching another. Hitting, kicking. I was still holding on to my pencil from the test, and I started using it as a stake, hitting them in the heart. One after one, they all turned to dust. I was standing all alone in the parking lot. From behind a tree, Spike appeared.
“You see?” he asked. “You’re ready, Slayer.”
For a moment his eyes flashed yellow when he smiled.
“So, tonight? Can you come?”
“Ehrm, yeah, I think so. I told Mark some lie about it being Tinas’ birthday Saturday, and that we were planning something special.”
“Good one, Lee! You’re getting sneakier by the second!”
I smiled at Gemma. She had been my best friend since we were eight. Tina wasn’t one of our friends, but the daughter or Marks’ boss. Mark desperately wanted a promotion, and figured that me being friends with Tina was a step closer to that promotion.
“I’ve learned from the best,” I said with a smile, and Gemma laughed.
“I thing you’ve surpassed me. I only told mom I was staying at your place, studying for the French exam next week.”
“She still doesn’t know I’m not taking French anymore?”
“Nope, and I’m planning to keep it that way. It’s the perfect excuse, since she doesn’t even know what ‘bonjour’ means.”
I laughed with her, and then we said “see you later,” and walked to our classes.
Pam was actually at home that night, and I could leave straight after dinner. She told me that she had talked to Mark, and it was okay for me to take the next day off, as long as I looked after the kids all Sunday. Which I was supposed to do anyway. I got ready in my apartment, putting on a pair of black pants, and a purple halter neck top that showed off almost all of my back, and most of my breasts. I had borrowed a pair of boots from Gemma, and those really made the whole outfit look great. I wasn’t sure I would be able to walk in them though, but that was a small prise to pay for looking good. I met Gemma outside the club. She knew the bouncer, so getting in wasn’t a problem. I smiled when we were inside. The dance floor was already packed, and I couldn’t wait to get out on it.
“I don’t understand where you get all of your energy,” Gemma said when we were standing in the bar, waiting to order. We had been dancing for hours.
“Don’t know, won’t question,” I answered. “I want to dance more!”
“We will,” she laughed. “I just need to rest a bit. And get a drink.”
We ordered, and then Gemma sat down at a table, smiling at the guys who was already sitting at it.
“You don’t mind if we sit down, do you?” she asked one of them, a cute guy with dark hair.
“Of course not,” he said. “I’m Paul, and this is Greg. And you are?”
“Gemma, and Lee,” Gemma said and I smiled at them to. “Don’t you just love this club?”
“It’s alright,” Paul answered, and then Greg smiled at me. He was kind of good looking, with a nice smile, but he had long hair; I hated long hair on guys.
“I saw you dancing earlier. You’re good.”
I blushed. I’m not good at taking compliments.
We talked for a while, and then Gemma felt ready to attack the dance floor again. Paul and Greg followed us, and we danced all four. It was obvious that Gemma liked Paul. Greg did his best to hit on me, but it didn’t work. Gemma was laughing at something Paul said, and then she leaned over to me.
“I need some fresh air. Let’s go out.”
“Can’t you take Paul with you? I want to dance.”
“I am taking him, but I don’t want to be alone. Pretty please?”
I rolled my eyes. She was drunk, again, and I knew I had to come with them, keeping an eye on her. At least she was smart enough to realize she needed me to come with, so she wouldn’t be alone with an unknown guy when she was drunk. And what was friends for, if not to keep you safe, or holding your hair up when you had to throw up?
“Fine, lets go.”
All four of us made our way through the crowded dance floor, and continued through a back door that led to a dark alley. Gemma was hanging on to Paul, smiling at him.
“You’re cute. Has anyone ever told you that?”
“Once or twice,” he said. “Most of the time, they just scream.”
“Why?” Gemma asked, and he laughed.
“Do you want to know?”
“Actually, I want to throw up,” Gemma said, getting a bit pale. She turned around, leaning over a couple of loading pallets that stood against the wall. I walked over to her, when Paul put a hand on my shoulder and turned me around so that I was facing him and Greg.
“I’ll show you first then.”
Both of them transformed, their faces getting bumpy and the fangs appearing. I screamed, and Paul laughed.
“See? That’s why they scream.” Then he attacked.
It was just as before. I could see the movement even before it came, and I avoided him easily, hitting him as he whooshed past me. I caught Greg right in the forehead with my next punch, sending him flying against the wall of the alley. Then they teamed up, attacking me from two directions at once. A kick and a duck later, they were standing side by side, eyeing me.
“Who the hell do you think you are?” Greg hissed.
“She’s the Slayer,” someone said behind him, and when Greg turned around I caught a glimpse of Spike.
“The Slayer?” Greg laughed. “The Slayer’s a myth.”
“Oh yeah? My bad. Just ignore her, then.”
Spike attacked, and at the same time Paul went after me again. I fought him fast, hitting and kicking. It was obvious I had the upper hand. Spike was doing pretty well too, sending Greg into the wall more than once. Then he had a stake in his hand.
“Slayer, catch,” he called to me, and when I looked at him, he threw it to me. Quickly, I stabbed Paul in the chest, getting the same result as with the other one. Then I went after Greg, pushing the stake into his back when he was attacking Spike again. He turned to dust, causing Spike to fall slightly forward when the resistance disappeared. Then he stood up and brushed the dust away from his clothes.
“You’re getting the hang of things, Slayer.”
“What? And don’t call me that. Are you following me?”
“As a matter of fact,” Spike said, getting all righteous, but then he made a face and rolled his eyes; “Yes. Since your Watcher isn’t here yet, I figured you could need a little help. Good thing I did, too, ‘cause here you are, caught in a alley without any bloody weapons. What are you, daft? Going out without a stake!”
“Didn’t think I was going to need one,” I said and turned around and took a look at Gemma. She was fine, and she hadn’t thrown up too much on her own hair. At least I had fulfilled one of my duties as best friend.
“Where did they go,” she asked me when I helped her up.
“They had to leave. Lets get you home.”
I helped her out of the alley, keeping my eyes open for a cab. Spike followed us.
“You don’t have to follow me anymore, I’m just getting her home before I go home myself.”
“Fine. I’m just going in the same direction.”
He stopped a cab, and helped us get in the back, and then got in beside the driver. I told the driver Gemmas’ address, and when we got there Spike paid for the ride. He helped me getting Gemma to the back door, but stayed outside when I sneaked her up to her room. It was a good thing her parents were heavy sleepers. When she was safe in her bed, I walked out into the night, making sure the back door was locked behind me. Spike was waiting for me.
“Thought I told you that you don’t have to follow me?”
“I’m not following you. I’m keeping you company.”
“Right, just what I need, a crazy guy not leaving me alone,” I muttered under my breath as I walked past him. He walked up next to me, not saying anything, and we walked over to my place in silence.
“I’m not crazy, you know,” he said as we walked into my yard. “I was; now I’m not.”
“And that makes me feel so much better,” I said sarcastically. Spike actually smiled a bit too.
“Seen any Watcher yet?”
“No. What is that anyway, a Watcher?”
“Well, the Council grows them. English wankers with tweed jackets and glasses.”
“Bit like you then?”
“Hey, you’ll never see me in a tweed jacket! Anyway, you should get yours real soon. Comes with a handbook and everything.”
“A Watchers handbook?”
“No, the Slayers handbook. Contains all kinds of useful information, like that a stake through the heart kills a vampire.”
I laughed at him.
“What’s the Council? The things that grows Watchers?”
“A whole lot of English wankers with tweed jackets. Keeps the tweed industry going. They were nearly extinct once, but as all other cockroaches they survived and multiplied. They help the Slayer with boring research, so that you don’t have to bother your pretty little head with reading.”
“Will they do my homework too?”
“Unfortunately, no. Here we are then.”
He stopped outside my door.
“Yeah,” I said and unlocked the door. “Are you absolutely sure that you’re not crazy?”
“Completely,” he answered. “Or, well, as sure anyone can be of such a thing.”
I walked into my apartment, leaving the door open.
“And you know more about the Slayer and Watchers and vampires?”
“All kinds of stuff,” he answered from the outside the door. I turned around, looking at him. He was really good looking. “Will you tell me more about them?”
“Sure.”
“Don’t just stand there then,” I said. “It’s cold; come in and close the door.”
