Part Six

"So, what you're saying is..."

"If Buffy gets her first taste of blood, then she will become a vampire. There's still..still a,a,a chance that we can save her which is why I sent Xander on this trip to New York."

"What? How can Buffy be a vamp. I mean, she's the slayer and everything. And what am I doing with you losers at midnight, anyway?" Cordelia crossed her arms and managed to glare at everyone in the car.

Xander gave her an impatient look. "Cordy, you volunteered to come, OK?" Cordelia considered that for a minute. Oz grinned. "I'm sure the welcome-back kiss you gave Xander had something to do with it....Cordy." Cordelia silently fumed but wisely decided not to say anything more.

Xander nudged Willow gently in the side. "You've been really quiet tonight. What's wrong?" Willow shook her head. "Poor Buffy", she said softly. Oz turned her round and gave her a kiss. Xander's eyes became remote as he put his arm around Cordelia who snuggled up close to him. Giles watched them and worry appeared in his eyes but he said nothing.

The creature was feeding. The blood was good. It was sweet, dark. fresh and charged with life. Someone put a hand on her back. "That's enough, Buffy. We have to keep the child alive." Her sire. She must obey her sire. Buffy reluctantly tore her mouth from the child's exposed neck. The cherubic throat now marred by two angry red bites. She dropped the child as Angel knelt down beside her and kissed her. It was a passionate kiss which Buffy returned whole-heartedly.

"If you two must show your affections for one another, then would you please reserve your baser instincts for a private chamber", Spike was amused. Angel's voice was smooth but dangerous. "Leave now, Spike and Dru. Unless you want to join in and play. But I warn you, I'm not in a sharing mood." Spike glowered. But he knew Angelus meant every word. The door swung shut behind them. Buffy's blood covered face was raised to Angel's as he put his arms around her. Buffy purred approvingly. "Angel darling", Buffy's eyes glowed with an unholy light. "Show me what I've been missing." Angelus laughed as he whispered in her ear. From far away the sound of a dress zipper being pulled down echoed softly.

Willow's eyes were huge as she scanned the computer screen. "Oh, my God!!"

"What?", Xander asked. They were all crowded around the computer. "This is it, Xander! This is the cure for Angel!"

"Oh, great! I'm really happy for the walking corpse and all but can we like go now? I haven't washed my face tonight and I can just feel my pores opening up", Cordelia shuddered. "Hello??!! Is no-one listening to me?"

"Shut up, Cordelia!" Willow's brow was wrinkled and Xander thought that she looked tired and frail. He had a sudden urge to hug her but Oz had moved first. He gave her a bear hug. Willow smiled. "I'm sorry for wigging out on you, Cordy. It's just that all this time, the disk was right under our noses and we never even saw it."

Giles looked very old as he faced them. "I know where we can get an Orb Of Thesulah. We can start the ritual tomorrow night. Dawn is too near for us to save Angel now." Willow put a reassuring hand on Giles' arm. "Are you sure you wanna do this, Giles? We can handle the ritual if you just tell us what we need to do." Giles' eyes were distant. "I'm not doing this for Angel. I'm doing this for Buffy."

Dawn was near. Buffy smiled as she stretched happily. She held out her arms to Angel, who was fully dressed. Angel grinned. "Last night was really good, babe." Buffy looked at him coyly. "I know." She got up in a single fluid movement. With nothing but the bedsheet wrapped around her, she walked towards the wardrobe. "Do you have anything I can wear?" Angel tried to pull her into his arms but she slipped away. "I think", she said as she laughingly kissed Angel. "That it's time little Mary and I paid a visit to my friends."

Angel kissed her hard. "I love your mind, Buffy." Buffy giggled. "I'm sure it wasn't my mind you loved last night." Ducking into the walk-in closet, she frowned at the rows of dresses that greeted her eyes. Angel shrugged. "They're Dru's." "That figures. The girl is livi
