Chosen One: Part Eighteen
by KM
All of the four in the room were completely shocked. They found it had to believe Giles, and thought he was trying to tease them, which was very un-Giles. Buffy recovered first.
"So what you’re telling us is that when Kathlin turns 16, she will be a vampire, but with no demon.” He nodded, then added, “Incidentally, do you know when her 16th birthday is?” Suddenly, Buffy’s eyes went extremely wide and her hand flew to her mouth.
"Giles, her birthday is tonight. I remember Mom talking about having a secret party before she knew that she had to leave. Ohmigod, she’s turning into a vampire and she’s alone with Spike. What if he tries to bring her across?"
"I don’t think he will.” Angel answered her, “He seems to know about her being special. I mean, look at the elaborate measures to get her, yet he staked one of his own fledglings when it threatened to hit her. I wouldn’t be surprised if….” Angel’s voice trailed off as he thought. "Giles, what if Spike is her guardian?” his voice was horrified. Giles also started to think about it.
"It would make sense. The strange attack, Spike’s reaction to his fledglings’ actions, his gentleness towards her, it all seems to fit.” Buffy looked slightly confused.
"Giles, refresh me. What are you talking about?” Giles rolled his eyes and impatiently reminded her about their earlier discussion about half vampires. She then nodded her head, signifying that she understood. Then she had a thought.
"Angel, what if Spike was at the Bronze that night? Remember that guy she was dancing with, wearing all black who just seemed to disappear. My ‘spider sense’ was tingling when he entered and didn’t stop until he left.” Angel nodded his head.
"It’s most likely. I felt that strange feeling, too."
"So what can we do?” asked Willow. She and Xander had been quietly listening to the discussion from their seat on the floor. Buffy suddenly had a very determined look in her eyes, which brought everyone on their guard.
"Angel, you know where Spike’s hideout is, right?” He nodded, wordlessly.
"Good. Then come with me.” She jumped up and headed towards the door. Turning back, she said, “I want the rest of you to stay here. It’s just safer.” And with that, she was out the door, Angel following her, worried.
