Incarnate: Chapter 11: Old dog, new trick
by Timan
Spike flopped down onto his favorite armchair. He sighed satisfactorily as he licked off the last drops of O- he got from a friendly college girl he met on his way home. As he was digesting his meal he heard the sound of his replacement front door being smashed in. spike leant his head back in frustration.
“Oh bloody hell slayer! Do you know how much it costs to replace that door every time you gallivant in!”
“Hey, a big strapping vamp like you. Shouldn’t be hard to find the money.”
Spike lifted his head up again. Xander stood casually in the doorway to Spikes cave and smiled at the vampire.
“Incarnate. Not big on the knocking I see.” Spike replied
“Yeah, I find that splintering wood get you more attention.” Xander replied, “so how you been Spike?”
Spike shrugged.
“Not bad, Slayer keeps trying to kill me so nothing’s changed really.”
“Good, good, say, Spike you’re going to do a little favor for me.”
“Oh and why’s that?”
Xander didn’t reply. He simply looked up the cave roof. A few seconds later an earthquake struck Spikes cave. Sections of the cave ceiling collapsed down narrowly missing spike by Inches. He jumps out of the armchair just as a huge boulder drops down on it. As the earthquake subsides Spike swings around to Xander.
“You know you could have just said please,” spike replied in a nervous annoyed tone, “what do you want me to do?”
Giles slammed down another book onto the table at the bronze. He scanned through the pages as quickly as possible. Buffy entered the club and returned to her watcher. Noticing her arrive Giles looked up.
“Any luck?” he asked softly
“No. Just seemed like you’re standard earthquake to me. Couldn’t find anything super about it.” Buffy replied
“We must not take such events so lightly,” Drogyn commented, “I believe the timing is not coincidental.”
“It certainly fits in with the pictures I got on migraine TV.” Doyle continued
Angel paced thoughtfully.
“I think Incarnate trying to spook us. You get anything new on how we can stop him yet?” he said.
Giles continued to scan through the book further. After a few moments he stopped on a passage.
“Yes. I believe I just found something. This manuscript refers to the entrapment of the old ones.”
Buffy cleared a spot on the table and sat herself down.
“So what are we talking Giles? Oversized trap and a giant wheel of cheese?”
“Actually you’re not far off.” Giles replied
“Yay me.” Buffy smirked to herself.
Giles sat back on his chair and consulted his notes to see if his finding match. Nodding he takes off his glasses.
“Do you remember the story I told you when we first met Buffy? About the fall of the old ones?”
Buffy squinted as she thought.
“Vaguely. I remember you telling me not to do cheerleading.”
“And you didn’t follow you watchers advice?” Cordelia said, “no wonder Xander turned evil.”
“Ladies focus,” Giles snapped, “As I explained to you then before man walked the earth there were powerful demons, the old ones, according to the information I got from the Tulimolk Demon Compendium. Incarnate drew them to this plane of existence to roam freely. Eventually the old one became restless and cried out to Incarnate. So Incarnate took one of the lesser beings and forged man as a source of food and to be worshiped by for his demon brethren. Overtime the number of the human population grew. Eventually there was a human revolution and the old ones where overthrown. The demons that did not escape this dimension were forced into sarcophicas and placed into the deeper well.”
“So do we know how these humans trapped the old guys?” Buffy asked
“By utilizing an elemental energy known as primordial magick. This is the raw energy where modern magick gains it’s power from. As much as the old ones tried to resist they were drawn to its incredible power.” Giles continued
“So great,” Cordelia replied, “We find this prime-evil energy thing, drag the Xander demon to it, stick him back in his coffin, then we can all go to Vegas like angel promised.”
“Wait, I never said we were going to Vegas.” Angel replied
Cordelia folded her arms and flashed him an annoyed look. Buffy was amused to see Angel almost recoil at the power of Cordelias stare.
“Unfortunately. This is a task that is not going to be easy to achieve.” Drogyn commented, “there has not been a single fragment of primordial magick found anywhere on the planet in eons.”
“What about the coffin?” Doyle asked, “if these early humans had to lead theses demons into coffins wouldn’t they have to put it inside?”
“Yes you are correct but there are not any empty tombs in the deeper well”
“Except for Incarnates.” Angel replied
Drogyn thought about this.
“This does make sense. Though retrieving the tomb from the center of the Earth is not going to be an easy task. I would require the service of a magick user.” He pondered
“Well I’m sure Willow . . . “Giles started
“No,” Buffy interrupted, “I don’t think will’s up to the task at the moment. The news about Xander knocked her around a bit.”
“I’m sure we can locate someone else for this task.” Drogyn replied
“Knock, knock” Spike said from the doorway
The group turned to spike as he walked onto the dance floor.
“I heard there’s battle about to begin though you’d like some help,” he said.
Both Buffy and Angel looked at Spike in confusion.
“What are you doing here Spike?” Angel asked aggressively
“I told you I want to help,” Spike relied in an annoyed tone, “if the big hurt is coming to this town you’re going to need more then just a forehead to defeat it.”
The stared at spike in a disbelieving silence. Spike rolled his eyes.
“Oh come on slayer. You and I both know that being evil hasn’t worked for me at all recently. I though I’d try my hand at being a good guy, you know, fight the good fight for life, liberty, and puppies and all that. You’re gonna need some more muscle if you’re planning on taking down the biggest bad and I though since you and I are such great palls that, oh bloody hell I can’t do this. Here’s the deal Slayer. Incarnate sent me here to distract you while he deals with the witch and wolf boy.”
Buffy and Angel looked at each other with Urgency. They both moved for the front door as quickly as they could. When they left spike turned back to the group.
“Well. Damn decent of them to leave me this tasty smorgasbord before they left.” Spike said morphing into vamp mode.
Buffy burst back through the door. She grabs spike by the collar and drags him away
“You’re coming with us Spike.” Buffy declared
Willow lay on her bed and held her pillow tightly. Oz sat over her and lovingly stroked her hair. They hadn’t said anything to each other for at least an hour but the silence explained more then words could.
“I can’t believe he really gone,” Willow cried
“I know baby. Just let it out.” Oz replied sweetly as he kissed her on the cheek.
Willow sat up slowly and looked into her boyfriend’s eyes.
“This demon is just like him, I mean was just like him, he remembers stuff that Xander and I only knew.”
“We’re going to stop him Will. I bet you right now Buffy’s going to kick that demons ass.”
“Ah, I wouldn’t put too much money on that Oz-man.” Xander said as he lay on Buffy’s bed, “she’s going to have a lot more to worry about in a few seconds.”
Oz slowly moved himself between Willow and Xander.
“I think you should go.” Oz said calmly
“And I think all you humans should die in a fiery pit of hell but we all can’t have what we want,” Xander replied as he sat up and stared at the couple, “I just heard from my source that Giles he found the way to defeat me. And since, by now, spike as failed at the job I set him to do I’m guessing the slayer and the vampire are on their way here right now to stop me from killing you.”
Willow moved back in fear. Oz stood defiantly between them.
“You lay one finger on Willow I’ll kill you myself!” Oz yelled
“See this is the beautiful thing about my plan Oz. I’m not going to kill her, you are.”
“No way. I’m not going to play you’re sick game. I would never intentionally hurt willow!”
“Yeah I know. Not intentionally.”
Xander snapped his fingers. Suddenly Oz clutched his stomach in pain. He looked out the window and noticed that it wasn’t a full moon. Somehow Incarnate was in control of his transformations. Oz dropped to the ground. Willow watched in horror as his fingers and nose changed. She swung around to try and leave but Xander blocked the exit.
“C’mon Will. Don’t leave yet this is the fun part.” Xander said happily
Oz began to growl as his clothes slowly ripped off. Willow looked at Oz for a moment then in desperation looked back at Xander.
“Please!” she pleaded, “change him back!”
“Ooo, no, sorry. See the problem is to make Oz change now I kinda had to destroy his human form.” Xander replied
The werewolf sniffed at the air. He turned and faced the witch hungrily. Willow looked at her former boyfriend in sheer terror. Xander chuckled to himself then vanished.
Buffy and Angel rushed down the corridors of the dorm room. This would have been a lot quicker if they weren’t dragging spike along with them. As they arrived at Buffy’s dorm the door smashed down as Willow struggled against the strength of the Werewolf. Buffy let go of spike then she and Angel rushed the werewolf knocking it off the witch. Angel dragged Willow to safety as Buffy fought against the creature.
“What happened?” Angel asked
“I was talking to Oz. Then Xander showed up and turned Oz into werewolf mode.” Willow replied
“How? It’s not a full moon.”
“I don’t know he just snapped his fingers.”
“Alright I’ll make sure we put Oz somewhere safe until we fix this. Are you okay?”
“Yeah. Go help Oz.”
Angel nodded and returned to where the Buffy fight was. As he stood up he noticed that Buffy had him by the head.
“Buffy wait!” Angel yelled
It was to late. Buffy twisted the werewolf’s neck sharply and, with a loud crack, the creature dropped to the floor dead.
“NO!” Willow screamed as she scrambled over to Oz
Buffy backed away quickly as Willow hugged the great beast.
“What just happened?” Buffy asked
“That was Oz.” Angel replied.
Buffy put her hands over her mouth in shock.
“Oh god. Will I’m so sorry! I thought it was a demon.”
Buffy tried to hold Willow but the Witch shrugged her off. Willow glared at Buffy with a fiery anger.
“Don’t ever come near me again!” Willow screamed at the slayer.
“Will . . .”
“I mean it Buffy! None of this would have ever happened if you just stayed away from Sunnydale. I hate you!”
Buffy tried to move in again but Angel stopped her. She looked up at the vampire as tears formed into her eyes. Angel, sensing the pain, held onto her tight.
From down the hallway spike smiled at the show he just saw.
“Now that is what I call carnage.” He said happily to himself.
