Chosen One: Part Four

by KM

She instinctively turned around and caught the object that came flying at her, without blinking an eye. It turned out to be a skateboard. She looked up and saw a dark-haired guy running towards her.

"Are you all right?” he asked “How did you….”. His voice trailed off when he saw that she held the skateboard.

"Luck.” she smiled at him, thinking “Boy, he is CUTE!”, which was exactly what the boy was thinking about her “WOW. She definitely must be new.” Since the boy was obviously unable to speak, she made the first move.

"Hi. I’m Kathlin."

"Hi.” the boy choked out, “I’m Xander.” “Well, do you where the principal’s office is? It’s my first day here and I have to meet him to get my class schedule.” Xander did his best to look wise, but all it did was make Kathlin hold back a laugh.

"My poor damsel in distress, I shall show you to your destination.” And so, together they walked into the school, Kathlin asking all sorts of questions and Xander answering them.

A while later, Kathlin walked out of Principal Snyder’s office, holding a sheet of paper that had her classes on them. Biology, History, Computers, Math, and a free block. Luckily, her free block was first thing in the morning, so she could check out the campus. Xander grabbed at the sheet and she let him see her classes.

"Cool!”, he exclaimed, “I have a free block the same time you do and History. But you’ll need books for it and Biology, so let’s get them from the library. That’s where most of my friends hang around and they should be there by now.” They talked as they walked and soon the two were at the library. Xander pushed open the doors and there, sitting at a computer, was a pretty redhead. Walking out of a further hidden office, and carrying a very old looking book, was a tall man wearing glasses, and right nearby stood a blonde who suddenly spun around and almost pinned Kathlin to the wall with a strange object. But Kathlin anticipated her movements and swiftly stepped aside and flipped the girl onto her back. The blonde looked up at her with amazement in her blue eyes as she stood up and brushed herself off. Kathlin noticed that she also had the attention of the computer girl and the tall guy, who stood completely frozen and wide eyed. She looked back at the blonde, who looked directly at her. All of a sudden, Kathlin knew who it was. She asked cautiously “Are you Buffy Summers?” The girl narrowed her eyes for a moment and replied “Why?"

"I’ve been looking for you everywhere. I’m the daughter of your mom’s friend, the one who was flying in from Australia. My name’s Kathlin.” Buffy visibly relaxed and so did everyone else. She smiled and said “That’s me. The girl at the computer is Willow, the tall English guy is Giles, and I can see you’ve already met Xander.” “May I ask why you are here?” said Giles, speaking for the first time since she’d walked in.

"Well, my mom and Aunt J were really good friends a long time ago and one night, my mom made your mom promise to be my guardian if anything were to happen to her.” As she spoke, Kathlin walked towards the center of the library, to a table and sat down.

"So one night, I came in from hiking, right at sunset. I hoped Mom wouldn’t be really mad, because she told me never to stay out past sundown. I heard her talking to these strange guys. They were asking about me and where I was. My mom said she didn’t know, which was true because she never knew where I went hiking. Then one of the guys bent over to whisper some threat into her ear and the next thing I knew, she was dead.” Kathlin felt herself dangerously close to tears, but she continued on.

"I called the police, since we don’t live really far out, but they said if I couldn’t identify the guys who did this, then there was nothing they could do. I was shocked and furious. I told them if they weren’t going to catch the killers, then I would. But I had no time to start. The will was read and I was sent here before I could get a chance to find any leads.” Kathlin laid on her arms on the table, exhausted by telling the chilling tale but glad to have it off her chest. Giles asked her “Where was your father through all this?"

"I wouldn’t know. I’ve never met him.” Buffy sat down beside her.

" I know sort of how you feel. My dad doesn’t live with us, either."

"Aunt J told me. Do you miss him?” Buffy thought for a moment.

"I guess at some times, I do. But not all the time. I have more life here than I did in L.A.”

Suddenly, a bell rang above their heads.

"That’s your cue to get to class.” Giles told them briskly. Willow and Buffy stood up and gathered their books.

"Are you coming?” she asked Kathlin.

"No, I have a free period right now.” Buffy smiled ruefully.

"I wish I had it too. Well, Xander will keep you company, right Xander?” He nodded, startled.

"And you two can keep Giles company, right Giles?” she added in a little girl’s voice. He almost glared at her, sending both Buffy and Kathlin into giggles.

"Remember, Giles be nice!” she told him as her and Willow walked out of the library.
