Chosen One: Part Two

by KM

The next morning, around 7am, Kathlin woke up to a knocking on her door.

"What?” she called sleepily. The door opened and Joyce walked into the room. She sat down on the bed, gently shaking Kathlin.

"I thought it would be best if you went down to the school to see the principal about your class schedule. I told them to expect you around 9am, so that gives you 2 hours to get ready.” Kathlin half-sat up and asked “Did Buffy come home last night?” Joyce gave a sigh of …annoyance? “No, she didn’t. Why do you ask?"

"Well, I heard some noise later on last night, I assumed it was her coming in.” Joyce was almost shocked. When she had left, this girl was dead asleep, so how did she wake up so fast (and what woke her up if it wasn’t Buffy?)? “Anyways, you’d better get ready, I need to leave around 8am.” Joyce replied as she walked out of the room. Kathlin dragged herself out of bed. Just cause she was in a new place, it didn’t mean that she was eager to go to school.

Around 7:30am, Kathlin walked downstairs and was greeted by the smell of fresh toast.

"Mmm, real breakfast.” she thought as she wolfed down three pieces.

"Goodness, didn’t they feed you on the plane?” asked Joyce with surprise.

"The food is so gross, even the mice wouldn’t eat it. And they’ll eat anything.” Kathlin joked. It felt good to laugh, something she hadn’t done for a long time.

"Are you ready to go?” Kathlin looked around, thinking “I’m sure I brought my backpack down with me."

"Just let me get my backpack.” She ran upstairs, towards her room, when curiosity brought her to a stop. She slowly opened the door labeled in a bright sign “Buffy’s. Keep Out.”

Inside, the room was almost exactly like hers’, except for the way it was decorated. She also noticed that the window was in the same place as her room.

"Weird.” she thought. All of a sudden, a voice called out “Kathlin, are you coming?” She started, then ran to her room, grabbed her bag, and flew down the stairs.

"I thought I’d lost you up there.” Joyce joked.

"Nope, I’m still here.” she replied with a grin. Together, they walked out to the car “and to the dreaded school.” Kathlin thought nervously. As they got in and started the car, she began to finger her necklace. She always did that when she got bored or nervous. It was lovely, a deep blue stone the size of a dime on top of an intricate silver backing with a silver chain. When the stone was held or moved, faint lines shone softly in the back, giving it a strange glow when sunlight hit it. Joyce noticed this and said “That’s a beautiful necklace. Did your mother buy it?"

"No, I’ve had it since I was a child and she told me never to take it off, no matter what. She said it was like a good luck charm or for protection, I don’t remember. But it’s the only thing I have to remember my mother by now.” Kathlin said with a trace of sadness. Just then, the car pulled up in front of the school.

"Now remember, go right to the principal’s office and get your class schedule, it will tell you who your teachers are and where to get your books.” Joyce paused as Kathlin gave her a smile.

"Yes Mom!” she joked. And with that, Joyce’s car pulled away, leaving Kathlin alone to find her way through the huge school.
