Incarnate: Chapter 6: Highway man
by Timan
They both sat quietly as Maggie Walsh ran through her lesson. Willow looked hopefully over to Buffy see if she could get any response but was met with intense silence. When class Finished Buffy packed up her things at slayer speed.
“So Buffy do you want to? . . .” Willow started as she collected her books
She looked up and realized Buffy had already left. Willow wondered what the heck was going on with her. She had sensed how tense Buffy was feeling sitting next to her and how diligently she looked at the front of the class. Why wouldn’t she tell her what was going on?
Outside of the class Buffy was power walking as quickly as she could. Felling the emotions get to her again she stopped and leaned against the wall. As much as she tried to push the photos of that victim report to the back of her mind they always came flooding back. When she finds the demon that did this it was going to pay for killing . . .
“Buffy!” Xander called from behind her.
She turned around with a start and looked at Xander curiously.
“Xander? What are you doing here?”
Xander walked up to the slayer. He slowly played with his coffee cup.
“Right now I’m practicing the age old art of skulking. Willow asked me to meet her here.”
Buffy folded her arms and stared at him.
“Why?” she asked
“I think it might have something to do with one of her best friends not talking to her for some unknown reason. Will’s been . . .”
Xander looked around the area for somewhere to put his coffee cup. He flagged down a passing cleaner pushing his trolley.
“Sorry, could you deal with this? Thanks” Xander asked him handing him his coffee cup
The cleaner nodded and took the cup. As he returned to his journey Xander walked back over to Buffy.
“Will’s been worried about you. I was on the phone with her for an hour last night telling her that it was noting she did.”
Buffy rolled her eyes. Xander shook his head and narrowed his eyes.
“What’s gotten into you? When did you decide to become bitchy the vampire slayer?” he commented
“I just have some things to deal will Xander? Is that okay or do I need your approval?”
“We all know about your ‘things’ Buffy. If it’s something bad why aren’t we getting the troops?”
“Because it not about the Gang! God Xander I know you’re life sucks why do you have to bring down others with you?”
Buffy glared at Xander. Her guilt kicked in when she saw his hurt expression.
“So now the truth comes out.” Xander replied coldly
Buffy rubbed her forehead.
“I’m sorry Xander. I . . . I didn’t mean it . . .”
“Hey don’t worry about it. It’s very comforting to know that your best friend has absolutely no faith in you.” he said angrily
Tears begin to well up in her eyes as she looked at her wounded friend.
“Xander . . .”
“Forget it Buff!” he yelled as he walked off, “Talk to me again when you decide to be human!”
Buffy folded her arms awkwardly and walked off Campus. Xander watched her go from the vantage point he got from walking down the hall.
“One more down.” he said seriously to himself
It was late in the evening when Angel entered the Sunnydale border. As he was driving he skimmed through the book he acquired from Wolfram and Hart. What made him even more surprised then actually getting the book is the fact that the book was actually full of useful information about Incarnate. The book, also, was free of any tracking or surveillance devices, which made him extremely nervous. As he rounded the corner he saw a man being attacked by a group of three Demons. He accelerated quickly knocking one of the demons off its feet. Breaking the car suddenly he jumped out and assisted in the demon fight.
The fight was intense. As angel punched one of the Demons in the head another rushed him from behind tackling him to the ground. He knocked that demon off him and got back onto his feet.
“My friend!” the man yelled
Angel turned to the attack victim just in time to see him toss a sword. Angel caught it. In one swift motion Angel swung cutting off both of the advancing demons legs off. As the demon fell to the ground he stabbed it through the heart. Quickly he pulled the sword out and beheaded the demon coming in from the side. Keeping the sword in motion he swung it around under his arm and impaled the demon behind him. He pulled out the sword and waited for the telltale thud of the body. The man got to his feet.
“I appreciate the assistance good sir.” He said as he dusted off his tunic
“No problem. Hey this is a nice blade, do you get your weapons from . . .”
Angel looked over to the man and was shocked.
“You.” Angel said curiously
“I can’t do this anymore Giles.” Buffy yelled as she paced stressfully through Giles’ apartment.
“It is only until we find out more information,” Giles replied in an attempt to be comforting, “perhaps you should return to your dorm room and get some rest. We’ll forgo patrolling tonight.”
“No,” she replied anxiously, “I can’t go back there. Willow will be there.”
Giles scratched his forehead and sat down on his couch.
“I really don’t see that harm Buffy.”
“Giles you don’t understand. I can’t trust any of them at the moment. This demon has been in the group for this long and we haven’t noticed . . . how do I know the others aren’t under his control? How do I know that you’re not under his control?”
“I can assure you Buffy I am not under anyone’s control.”
Doyle stood up from the table.
“Well I, for one, am tired I’m putting in my vote that we get some rest and pick this up in the morning.” he commented
“Yes that’s a good idea,” Giles replied, “Buffy you can sleep on the couch tonight if you wish. Angel should be back soon so I will look over any information he manages to acquire.”
“This could take a while.” Angel said as he leant in the doorway.
The group looked at him. Buffy walked up to him and examined his wounds.
“Oh my go are you okay?” she exclaimed
“Fine. Got into a bit of a disagreement on my journey.” Angel replied
“How did you get on with evil-lawyer-ville?” Doyle asked
Angel shook his head in confusion
“You know what? I honestly don’t know. But I did find out something useful. Incarnate is the name of our demon. And they gave me this.”
Angel gave the book to Giles. Giles flicked through it with Amazement.
“This is the Tulimolk Demon Compendium. It has been lost for centuries.”
“And they just, like, handed you? No secret hand shake, no threats?” Cordelia asked
“They became real friendly after I mentioned our demon.” Angel replied
Cordelia threw up her arms in defeat.
“That’s it. We’re all going to die.” She concluded
“Well this is most useful. I hopefully should have more information about Incarnate in the morning.” Giles commented
“There’s one more thing.” Angel mentioned
Angel stepped aside from the doorway and the man entered the apartment. Giles face dropped. He looked at angel in surprise.
“Oh my god. Is that who I think that is?” Giles asked
“Yeah. Trust me I was as surprised as you were.”
