Incarnate: Chapter 4: Error finding codex
by Timan
Buffy and Angel walked up to the front door of Giles house. To their horror they both noticed the lack of any front door. Wandered in They both saw the aftermath of the attack. Cordelia was sitting on a chair holding an ice pack on her head while Giles and Doyle collected the books that were thrown around the room.
“What happened?” Angel asked
Cordelia looked at Angel with her famous ‘Duh’ expression.
“One of the locals decided to drop by and give us a nice, warm, friendly concussion.” She replied
“Was it our demon?” Buffy asked
“No, unfortunately, it was a Fautur Demon.”
“Acting alone?” Angel replied with surprise, “I though Fautur’s were pack foot soldiers.”
“Well, yes, usually but this one was definitely solitary in it’s actions. It’s very strange.”
Buffy aided in the collecting of the scattered books. She looks up at Giles with curiosity
“Why is it strange? Demons have attack us before what make this different?”
“Well the key difference is that we’re still alive. Also I distinctly remember it taking one of my books. The Morntu codex.”
“Didn’t you say you were on to something before that demon punched our lights out?” Doyle asked
“Oh, yes, this demon we are dealing with I’m is not entirely sure it’s a lava demon. Doyle mentioned something about it being old.”
“So, what, the information we need is in this . . . Kodak?” Buffy asked
“Codex,” Giles continued, “not exactly. The Morntu codex was designed to be like a library reference. It lists most of the obscure texts that can’t normally be located by usual means.”
“Great! So we just find this demon thingy, Angel and Buffy will hurt it a lot, and we get the book back right?” Cordelia asked.
“No it’s not that simple. Fautur demons can travel through portals. It could be anywhere by now.” Angel replied seriously
Buffy shrugged in frustration.
“Great! This is just great!” Buffy said, “One of my friends is a demon and the only book that can tell us what kind of demon it is has been taken by portal guy! Can anybody else say screwed?”
“So the demon came straight for the book?” Angel asked
“After using us for football practice.” Cordelia replied
“Yeah,” Doyle said, “it was like that was that was the reason it came. Which means . . .”
“Which means that our demon might know we’re coming,” Angel said, “is there another copy of this Codex anywhere?”
“Not in the united states,” Giles replied, “the only other copy I know of is in the library of the watchers council. But getting access is going to be some what difficult since Buffy left.”
“And here’s me thinking I just explained everything with the ‘we’re screwed’ comment.” Buffy replied harshly
“Not exactly. I believe that we had a visitor after our demon friend.” Giles replied.
From under a pile of notes Giles produces the piece of paper. He hands it to Angel who examined it closely.
“Incarnate? Do you know what it means?”
“No, actually, I was hoping you had more luck with your endeavors.” Giles replied
“Noting really interesting,” Buffy replied, “’it’s’ coming. The world is going to end blah, blah, blah. You know the usually apocalypse calling card.”
Giles picks up his overturned chair and sits down.
“Well. I’ve exhausted all of my resources. And without the Codex I can’t locate the information I need. I’m not sure what to do next.” He states.
“I do,” Angel replies, “there might be one place that has a copy of the Codex.”
Almost simultaneously Cordelia and Doyle look at each other. They both look at Angel anxiously
“Oh no mister you’re not going where I think you’re going are you?” Cordelia says
Angel turns to them and looks extra serious.
“We’re looking for something evil right? Why don’t we go to where evil lives?”
“Angel that’s crazy,” Doyle replies, “They’re not going to just let you walk in and take the book.”
“I figure if I hit a dozen or so of them they’ll see it my way. I’ll be back by tomorrow night. In the mean time you two keep an eye on the gang see if something happens.”
“Oh yay spy duty,” Cordelia replies sarcastically, “what if one of us gets killed or eaten or something?”
“Then we’ll definitely know that the demon suspects something.” Buffy replied
Cordelia flashes Buffy a look.
“You’re not filling me with a lot confidence.”
Buffy shrugged
“Wasn’t my plan to.”
“Just make sure nothing happens.” Angel concluded
“Will do boss.” Doyle replied
Angel strides out the door. Cordelia and Doyle shake their heads.
“How long do you think before he gets himself hurt?” Doyle asks
“I give it about ten seconds after he enters the door.” Cordelia replied
Buffy looked at the both of them curiously
“Why? Where’s he going?” she asks the pair of them
“Wolfram and Heart.” Doyle replies
Benny worked happily at the counter of the Hardware store. He was reading his book when he heard the door open. Moving from behind the counter he saw a small red headed girl wandering down the isles absent-mindedly. He put down his book and walked up to his potential customer.
“Hi there can I be of any assistance?” he asked is his most customer servicey voice.
Willow turned to him and gave him a devilish smile.
“I’m looking for chain.” She asks purposefully
“Sure we have chain here. What thickness were you looking for?” he replied
“Pretty thick,” willow replied, “going to be holding something strong.”
