Scars: A Tragic Understanding

by littlewiccan

Jenny sat soaking in the bubble bath she had made. She felt bad about getting angry at Giles but she was tired of waiting for him to wake up and get a clue.

She loved him and she had thought he loved her. Who said she had to wait for around for him Jenny thought; where in the rules does it say I have to sit around and wait for Prince Charming. If he won’t make a move; I will, she thought as she got out of the tub and wrapped a towel around her body.

Giles sat in his study thinking about everything that had happened of late. He began to clean his glasses in frustration; just thinking about it all gave him a headache. What was he going to do with William? Or Buffy she was anything but stable after everything that had happened.

Usually he would talk to Jenny and ask her for advice but she was mad at him and he doubted she would talk to him. He hated it when she was angry with him. What if she had finally had enough? What if she was planning on leaving? He wouldn’t let her. He loved her and he couldn’t live without her. He got up and left them room to look for her. He wanted to apologize and tell her he loved her.

Buffy lay in her bed fast asleep. She was moving around and looked slightly upset. “No,” she sobbed into her pillow, still dreaming.

“No, Mom!” Buffy yelled as she watched her mother, pregnant with her little sister tumble down the stairs. Her father had pushed Joyce down the stairs. She had been trying to protect Buffy, who was only, 13 from Hank’s abuse. She had succeeded in protecting Buffy but unfortunately had failed to protect her unborn daughter.

“Mom!” Buffy yelled as she rushed over to her mother, who was lying at the bottom of the stairs. Joyce struggled to get up and Buffy helped her.

“I’m okay,” she whispered to her daughter, although it was obvious she wasn’t.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Summers; you’ve had a miscarriage,” the doctor said sympathetically, “When you tripped, the fall was too much. I’m sorry.”

Buffy entered the hospital room as the doctor left. She found her mother sobbing quietly.

“Mom?” Buffy whispered, “Are you okay?” She asked half afraid of the answer.

“I’m fine. The baby….I had a miscarriage,” Joyce said with a pained smile, “I was going to name her Dawn.”

********************

Buffy woke from her dream with a start. It was one of the worst nightmares she had about her abuse because it felt so much like a dream and every time she would wake up she would remember it was real, it had really happened. She had really lost her baby sister and in that moment of realization she would relive the pain all over again.

******************

Giles was walking over to Jenny’s room when he ran into her.

“Jenny?” he said at little surprised, “We need to talk. I’m sorry, I know I’ve…”

But before he could finish his sentence Jenny kissed him, “I know” she said when she pulled away.

“I love you,” he said.

“I love you too,” she replied and with that he kissed her again.

Spike sat in his room, leaning his head against the headboard of his bed. He couldn’t sleep, every once and awhile he would have dreams about his sister and those nights he couldn’t sleep he didn’t want to relive that. It wasn’t too long ago that he had lost both his sister and his mother. Spending all that time with Darla and Faith must have brought back some of those memories.

“William do you love my insides as much as my outside?” Dru asked him in a dreamy, far off voice.

“Of course Dru,” he said. He had become accustomed to her ramblings. The doctor had said they had something to do with post trauma or grief from their mother’s death. He wasn’t sure what that meant but he knew she hadn’t been quite the same since the death of their mother.

“I hear death scratching at the window pane,” she said looking out the window, “its calling my name.”

“Don’t talk like that,” he said, taking her hands and leading over to the couch where she sat down, “Why don’t you play with your dolls.” He handed her a porcelain one with raven black hair and a blue dress with a white pinafore.

“No, not today, Miss. Edith has been a very naughty girl. She must be punished. She shan’t have any fun today.”

“Hey, how is she?” Darla asked as she opened the door and entered the room Faith by her side.

“Alright, its one of her better days,” William answered.

“Hey Dru,” Faith said knelling next to her, “We brought you a present.”

“How lovely, I simply adore presents.”

“Here,” Darla said handing her the package. It was a small box wrapped in periwinkle blue paper and it had a pretty satin bow.

“It’s too pretty to open,” Dru cooed as she began to gently tear off the wrapping paper and she pulled off the lid to the box, “Oh, its lovely.”

Inside the box was a silver locket. It was beautiful. Dru placed the box on the table and hugged her best friends.

“Why did you bring me a present she asked it isn’t my birthday,” Dru remarked.

“Because we wanted too and we love you,” Darla said, smiling.

************************

William walked up to the coffin to pay his respects. Inside lay his sister, she looked so peaceful. She was holding Miss. Edith in her hands and around her neck was the silver locket she had received.

“Dru, I don’t understand why would you do this? How could you leave me here all alone?” he said, fighting back the tears in his eyes. Darla and Faith were standing off to the side, comforting one another.

Giles came up behind him and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, “William, you’re not alone,” he said.

**********************

“Mom! No!” Drusilla sobbed as William held his struggling sister back. Eventually she gave up and they both feel to the floor, where Dru began to sob uncontrollably. They watched as the EMTs came in and placed their mother in a body bag and took her away.

Giles ran in to the room just as the zipper was being pulled up the bag. He had just been coming home from work when he saw the ambulances. He had quickly gotten out of his car and ran upstairs to Anne’s room. He knew what had happened his gut told him that she was dead. He knew there was nothing he could do too save her but he couldn’t help and think that maybe if he got there in time he could somehow prevent it.

*********************

William shook his head and began to get out of bed he needed to take a walk or do something, anything to get the past off his mind. He put on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and opened the door to his room, only to find Buffy standing there. They looked into eachothers' eyes and there was a mutual understand of the all the pain they had known.
