Buffy the Cat chapter 8
The night was cold. Buffy leapt through the grass, the only sound being the howling wind and the terrified mouse she was chasing. Yes, Buffy was chasing a mouse. It was alright, she reasoned. It was only a way to release her instincts. To hone her senses. It was a kind of slayer training. Besides, she would only hunt the mouse down, maybe kill it but never eat it. That made it okay in her mind, or as okay as she would ever be with this.
Willow and Tara had tried numerous spells to try to get them into human form again. None of them had worked. It was now close to a week since she turned. First to a rat, and then to a cat. Stupid Amy. Stupid Xander. She was mad at her friends. It was one of the sparse ways she had to channel her confusion, her doubt. She didn’t like all the features of being a cat. She was partly okay with the hunting, since she had done it so many times before on patrol, only with fanged undead ones. The ones who creeped her out more was the shying away from groups, being alone. Cats were loners. Buffy was a very social human. It didn’t fit. She was lonely, but at the same time content with her status of being independent.
The rush of the hunt wasn’t over yet. The mouse was still far ahead of her, sprinting through the grass. It was scared. For good reasons. Buffy had all the intentions of killing it.
Buffy gained speed, she was closing up on the poor defenseless creature. Almost there, almost….
Something hit her. Something big. Something furry. Something smelling of Willows chocolate chip cookies.
“Angelus!” Buffy yelled. Now was not a good time for him intervening. She almost had the mouse, could almost taste the victory. And then came Angelus. The big, black furry menace.
She struggled to get away from underneath him. Finally she managed to throw him off. It was partly because he had no intentions of holding her there. He had a big satisfied grin playing on his face.
“Hello” he said. Was he stupid? Didn’t he see how annoyed she looked at him? Could cats look annoyed? Yes, indeed. He was backing away now.
“Hey! I don’t want trouble, okay? “ He said with a skeptical glance in his eyes, calculating her. Deciding if or not she would attack him.
“You already got it” Buffy’s voice sounded flat. She was tired of having him interrupting. She didn’t know what had gotten into him the last couple of days. If it hadn’t been for him being the Scourge of Europe, now the Fear of Birds, she would have thought him clingy.
“Willow said to inform you that she had baked her famous cookies again.” She could hear Angelus as she walked away from him. She should have guessed it. Willow was feeling sorry. The last couple of days she had eaten a lot of cookies. They were yummy, yes, but also fattening. Angelus seemed to enjoy them though. Buffy sighed.
She still hadn’t figured out what her dream the other night meant. She needed time alone to try and think of it. It was like a riddle to solve. A very difficult one. What had the rumbling meant? The smell was like one she knew, yet couldn’t recognize. All these things were racing around in her brain. She felt like she was missing something. Maybe something important? It felt like a slayer dream, more than a slayer dream. Buffy hadn’t had a dream so emotionally sharp. It was a mystery. One she needed time to figure out, maybe she even needed Giles to interpret it. But now, she had Angelus to deal with.
Angelus! She had almost forgotten him. She looked over her furry shoulder to find him scowling at her. Then he walked away.
It looked like she forgot he was there. He had come here all the way from Willow’s kitchen to say that she had made cookies. And what did he get? Buffy, sulky and thoughtful. He didn’t like it at all. And she didn’t look like she was thinking of him. No, she had that distant look and didn’t pay him any attention. If she had been thinking of him, she would have stared at him as well. But no, she just walked away, leaving him standing there like an idiot. Angelus was all but an idiot. He was smart, intelligent, and boy did he sound weird referring to himself in the third person…
Walking away from where he had been standing for the last two minutes, he noticed Buffy noticing him just before he went, her pink collar contrasting against her white and orange appearance. Well, it wasn’t good for anything to just be standing there, so he decided that he’d go back for more of his cookies. He really started to like Willow because of her skills in the kitchen. Tara was being more shy, but he liked her anyway. She gave him food… NOT crappy cat food from a tin box.
He was fast growing tired of being a cat. Angelus did like getting fuzzed over, but didn’t at all like the fact that he had to rely on other people for his food and shelter. He liked to think of himself as an island. Lonely, but managing on his own. He didn’t need other people, normally people needed him for whatever reasons. Now he was relying on Willow and Tara to find a counter spell. Being a cat had its perks though. He could lie lazily in front of the fireplace, and no one would think he was lazy.
He was supposed to stay away from Buffy. He didn’t like the fact that he was addicted to her, enjoyed being in her presence, liked her scent. She was poison in his mind. Angelus didn’t think that it was healthy to have this major obsession on anything. Anyone, to be more precise. It almost felt like a crush. Luckily, Angelus had managed to hide it. He knew for certain that Buffy had no idea about it.
He walked away, just as Buffy started walking towards him. Her eyes described the emotions guilty and sad. He started on the walk back to Willow’s house, and then Buffy caught up with him.
“Hey” she started, a bit awkwardly.
“I’msorrythatIignoredyou,I’msorryokay?” Buffy said, all in one breath.
“Huh?” Angelus’ reply was.
“itwasrudeofme,whenyouwantednothingmorethantosaytomethatwillow’smadecookiesagain” (Deep breath) “they’redelicious,butIwasinhuntingmoodandyousortofkilledmyadrenalinekick,soI’msorry,forgiveme?”
Now, Angelus finally caught on to what she said. He’d been caught up in her scent before, but it now made perfect sense. She was apologizing. But that didn’t make perfect sense.. Buffy had never apologized to him before, not as he remembered. Wow… But funny though. Yes, he would forgive her. He hadn’t been mad at her since she walked up to him to give him some of her attention as well. And she was cute when stressed out!
Angelus smiled, just a brief one, but it seemed that Buffy had noticed it.
“OKI, so by a big guess, I’ll say you are not in such a bad mood as I had the perception of earlier on..” She started, uncertain. It seemed like Angelus had managed to keep his cool, not letting her read too much about his feelings.
“I was in a bad mood, but I dunno.. It just got better” He said, smirking..
They walked back to Willow’s house in silence. Angelus would begin avoiding her and her friendship tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow was a good day to start.
AN: Yes, another chapter finished. Not a lot happened in this chappie, but maybe more next time. I wanted to get an Angelus POV included, I’ve noticed I haven’t gotten much from Angelus’ side in this story, but I’m working for that to change, and I’ll try to include something else than just Buffy’s POV in the next chapter.
Okay, so now I’ve written another chapter just for you! So now is you turn to leave a review. Just for me! =D
