Karma: Somewhere New
by Spellbound
Everything here was backwards. The skies were green, the grass blue and the people, well they were strange. They looked like regular humans but they blinked the wrong way, eyelids coming in from the sides and meeting in the middle.
In a dark alley, a vampire prowled her way through the shadows looking for her next meal. In the corner of her eye, she spotted the tiniest movement, a large black rat munching on the remains of a burger bun. From her pocket, the vampire pulled a piece of chocolate and waved it at the rat, its whiskers twitched as the aroma hit it. The rat jumped down from the bin and ran over to the vampire who crouched down, allowing the rat to climb onto her hand and nibble at the sweet snack. As fast as lightening, the vampire wrapped her fingers tightly around the plump body of the rodent and pulled him to her mouth, biting into the soft flesh and draining the blood from the tiny creature. Throwing it's now lifeless corpse back into the bin, she licked her lips. "Gotta love the snacks here!" she said as her eyes scanned the darkness for something more substantial.
At the mouth of the alley, a tall, slim woman stood apparently waiting for someone, or something. Her blonde hair shining in the moonlight, the vampire regarded the figure with some suspicion as newbies weren't a common sight in this part of town, when they came into the darkness, they usually brought trouble for the creatures of the night.
From her vantage point on the street, the blonde woman looked around, there was nothing, not even a solitary car meandering its way through the night. She knew she was being watched from the shadows of the alley behind her and was growing uncomfortable, not only by the darkness and knowing she was being watched but by the eerie feeling that somehow this wasn't new to her.
The dazzle of headlights blinded her temporarily as a car turned into the silent alley, she watched as it drove slowly towards her before stopping in front of her. A middle aged man emerged from the driver’s side and looked at her over the car, his features while not typically handsome did hold some feeling of recognition and comfort for her. "Good evening Miss..." he began and she was struck by the warmth in his voice, his accent obviously British. "You are Miss Rosehip, I assume?" he removed his glasses and polished them on a handkerchief as he watched her. "Who may I ask wants to know?" Miss Rosehip replied, her tone slightly sharper than she'd intended. The man didn't seem at all surprised by her tone and continued; "My name is Rupert Giles, we've met.... erm.... well before. I have a lot of things that I need to explain, please come with me." His own tone made it perfectly clear that he was not a man to be messed with although looking at him, it was hard to believe. "I don't think that’s a good idea, Mr. Giles, but thank you." Miss Rosehip turned sharply and headed off down the street, away from the car. As soon as she stepped out of the light of a street lamp, she felt strong hands grasping her waist and a handkerchief was forced over her nose and mouth, the smell making her head spin and before she had a chance to fight, her body fell limp, supported only by the strength of Rupert Giles. As her body collapsed into his arms, he brushed her hair back out of her face and looked at the beautiful features framed by the golden blonde of her hair. "I'm sorry it had to be this way, Willow." he whispered as he carried her limp form to his car and laid her carefully on the back seat. Without a further sound, he returned to the driver’s side, opened the door and drove off into the night.
From the safety of the shadows, the vampire regarded this event with much curiosity. Murders and painful injuries were a common sight in this neighbourhood, but kidnap was an entirely new ball game. "Well, well, well." she muttered into the darkness, "I think I'll have to look into that, providing that damn Slayer stays out my way." With that she turned, and headed into the darkness.
