FROM THE DIARY OF DAWN SUMMERS:
June 3, 2003
We’ve been here about two weeks now. People are finally starting to call. We’ve gotten so many cases that Buffy is even sending Andrew out to help on some of them. I usually go out with Faith or Willow but only when Buffy feels there’s no immediate threat or whatever. Apparently she’s still into the protecting little sis role. In a way it is seriously annoying. But in another way I love it!
Does that make me sick and twisted? Or just a normal teenage girl? I can’t decide!

“This is great!” Buffy said. “Why didn’t we think of this sooner?”
Xander and Willow exchanged an amused glance.
“You tried charging for slaying once, remember?” Xander reminded her. “Didn’t work out so well.”
“I know,” Buffy said. “But this is different. People come in and tell us their problems and give us money to slove them.”
Sander smiled sadly. “Anya would’ve loved that.” He sighed. “So, who’s on schedule for patrol tonight?” He asked, changing the subject.
“You and Robin,” Buffy told him. “Faith and Dawn went out on a little mini-patrol. They had to pick up some magic books for Willow to look over.”
“From Angel?” Xander asked.
“Yeah,” Buffy said.
“To help find Cordy.”
Buffy nodded.
“Any word from Riley yet?” Willow asked.
“Yeah,” Buffy said. “”He called a few minutes ago.”
“Riley?” Xander asked.
“I had him call in a couple favors,” Buffy told him.
“For what?”
“Faith,” Willow said. “And?” She asked Buffy.
“She’s a free woman.”
“Huh,” Xander said. “How did he manage that?”
“Didn’t ask,” Buffy admitted.
“Did he get all weirded out when you told him who it was for?” Willow wondered.
Buffy smiled a little. “He said that if I could forgiver her then so could he. It helped that I told him how she helped up, though.”
“We should celebrate,” Willow said. “Maybe throw her a little’ you’re no longer an escaped fugitive anymore’ party.”
“Does Hallmark make a card for that?” Xander joked.

“I can’t take it anymore!” Dawn cried.
“What?” Faith asked, startled.
“What is the deal with you and Principal... Robin?”
“Principal Robin?” Faith asked, amused.
“You know what I meant,” Dawn said.
Faith smiled and continued walking.
“Well?” Dawn asked a few seconds later when Faith didn’t answer.
“I’m thinking,” Faith told her.
“About the dirty parts you can’t tell my virgin ears?” Dawn joked.
“No,” Faith laughed. “The truth is , I really don’t know what the deal is. We’ve gone out a few times and we’ve kissed a few times. But nothing more than that has happened since Sunnydale.”
“What?” Dawn cried, stopping. “You meant something more happened in Sunnydale?”
“Virgin ears, remember?” Faith called over her shoulder.
Dawn jogged a little to catch up.
“Whys the sudden interest in my love life?” Faith asked. “Or lack there of?”
“Since he’s pretty much all you talk about. Whenever he’s not around you’re all ‘Robin said this,’ or ‘I’ll bet Robin would like this,’ and the ever popular, ‘I’ll bet Robin would know what to do.’”
“Hey!” Faith said defensively. “Wait. I do, don’t I?”
Dawn smiled.
“But I talk about all sorts of other things. All the time, in fact.”
Dawn rolled her eyes. “Name one thing,” she challenged.
Faith thought about it.
“You can’t name anything,” Dawn said. “Can you?”
“Sure I can,” Faith insisted. “Just give me a minute.”
Dawn rolled her eyes again.
“Vampires,” Faith said suddenly.
Dawn scoffed. “Don’t count. You’re a slayer. It’s a job thing. Try again.”
“No,” Faith said calmly. “Behind you. I think those guys are vampires.”
Dawn turned around. “Oh,” she said.
“Evening ladies,” the tall red head said. “What are a couple nice lookin’ girls like you doing out on a night like this?”
“Picking up a little extra reading material,” Faith said, indication the books they were carying. “What about you guys? What brings the three of you out on a night like this?”
“We woke up hungry,” the short one in the leather jacket said.
“Oh,” Dawn said. “Well, there’s this really great Chinese place not too far from here. I could give you directions,” she offered.
“That’s not exactly what we had in mind,” the red head said as he revealed his game face. The other two followed suit. “Care to join us for a bite?”
Dawn looked at Faith and rolled her eyes.
“You girls seem very calm considering what’s about to happen to you,” the read head said.
“That’s funny,” Faith said, dropping her books on the ground. “I was just thinking that very same thing about you guys.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Faith pulled a stake out of her pocket. “Ever heard of a slayer?” she asked.
“So, you think you’re the slayer,” the red head laughed. “I happen to know for a fact from a reliable source that the slayer is a blond. Not a pretty brunette like yourself.”
“First of all,” Faith said. “I never claimed to be ‘the’ slayer. Second, you think I’m pretty?”
“Hey!” Dawn said. “Focus!”
Faith smiled, a little embarrassed. “Right,” she said. “Where was I?”
“You were about to slay some seriously annoying vampire ass,” Dawn said.

“You ran away?” Dave asked.
“Like a little girl,” Drusilla mused. “Crying to your mommy.”
“She killed them,” the red head said. “If I’d’ve stayed, she would’ve killed me too.”
“Didn’t I leave orders?” Drusilla asked sweetly. “Didn’t I say that no one was to leave the warehouse?”
The vampire nodded. “But we were hungry,” he tried to explain.
“You should’ve let her kill you,” Dru said, not dropping the sweet tone from her voice. “I will deal with you later.”
“Wait,” the red head called after her. “She said she was a slayer. And I don’t think she was the one you told us about”
Drusilla stopped. “I don’t pay you to think.”
“You don’t pay me at all,” the red head pointed out.
Dru ignored him. “Slayer.”
“Is that even possible?” Dave asked.
Dru went on. “Of course she’d be here.” She walked across the room and picked up a wooden stake.
The red heads eyes widened. “What are you doing with that?” He asked, alarmed.
Dru looked down at the stake in her hand and couldn’t remember why she picked it up.
Dave snapped his fingers and pointed at the red head.
Dru smiled. “Now I remember.”

Faith and Dawn walked into the Hyperion a little after nine.
“You’re back,” Willow said from behind the front desk.
“We got your books,” Faith told her.
“Great!” Willow said.
“Where do you want them?”
“Just put them down on the counter,” Willow told them.
“We ran into a trio of fangy fiends,” Dawn said after she put the books she had been carying on the counter.
“Really?” Willow asked. “Are you guys alright?”
“Yeah. Faith took care of them,” Dawn said. “Well, two of them. One ran of like a big baby.”
“So,” Faith said. “Any idea what Andrew made for dinner?”
“Don’t know. Not ready yet.”
As if on cue, Andrew entered the lobby. “Dinner is ready,” he announced.
“That was... convenient?” Dawn said.
The three girls followed him into the diningroom.
“Surprise!” Andrew, Buffy, Willow, Xander, Robin, and Kennedy cried.
“What did I miss?” Dawn asked when she saw all the party decorations.
“Riley called right after you guys left,” Buffy said.
Faith smiled.
“Does that mean what I think it means?” Dawn asked excitedly.
“Yep,” Buffy said. “Faith in now legally a free woman.”
“How did you guys throw this together so quickly?” Faith asked.
“Little decorating spell,” Willow said.
“Do I get presents?” Faith asked.
“One,” Xander said. “And can you believe it? Hallmark didn’t even have a card for this!”
Buffy handed her a neatly wrapped gift box. “It’s from all of us,” she said.
Faith tore it open and pulled out a brand new pair of black leather pants.
“You guys,” she said, as close to tears as any of them had ever seen her.
“Dinner is served,” Andrew said, entering with a large platter of hot dogs.
Faith looked at him, then at the hot dogs. “There better be cake,” she said.
