Worst Mistake: Answers

by Jackie Angel

Willow stood there for a moment taking in what Buffy just said. She sealed the envelope and put it in her bag. She quietly climbed the stairs and threw the bag into her room. She crept down the hall to Buffy's room. Standing outside Buffy's door Willow heard soft sobbing. *Knock* "Buffy?" Willow turned the knob and went into the room. She walked over to the bed and sat down next to Buffy. They sat for what seemed like hours in silence.

Finally Willow broke the silence "What was that all about Buffy? Did something happen between you and Angel?" Buffy's breathing hitched at the sound of his name. She sat up and faced Willow. "Yes something happened." Buffy took a moment to sort her thoughts. "Remember when I went to meet Angel after I came back?" "Yea I remember." Buffy continued "Well i had gotten there first and I waited like 15 minutes before he got there. He came over to me and didn't say anything at first but then he looked me in the eye.....Willow there was nothing there. No love, hate, sadness, happiness, regret or remorse. It was an empty stare. He was just blank." Buffy had to stop before she got to the hard part.

" He told me that he had a few things he wanted to say and that i deserved to know. I prepared myself for the worst, but what he had to say was way beyond anything i had expected. He said he loved Cordelia and they had a baby boy named Connor, and they were finally happy as a family. He told me his soul had been bound for quite some time but he didn't want to tell me so I didn't get my hopes up." Buffy had to stop again, struggling to keep her tears in check. "He said that he regretted ever coming to Sunnydale because all Sunnydale held for him was sorrow and pain. He told me he didn't want me to contact him after today. He started backing away from me with the same blank look in his eyes, and told me that I was the worst part of his long life and that he felt I was the worst mistake he'd ever made.

Buffy couldn't hold her tears in anymore. Willow didn't know what to say or do to make Buffy's hurt go away. So she grabbed Buffy by the shoulders and pulled Buffy into a hug. Buffy let out a sob so desperate that Willow cringed in sadness and pity. He loved her, how could he do this to her Willow thought. Eventually Buffy drifted off into an uncalm sleep. Willow tucked her in and quietly slipped out of the room.
