Mother, Son and holy ghost: California Dreaming

Chapter 2

English was one of the classes Daniel was good at. Talking to certain people, namely ones named dawn, he has trouble putting two words together but if you ask him to them down on paper he can not only join them but at another twenty or so to make a complete paragraph. He always felt since his mother was English that’s where he got his skill. Today’s lesson seemed like most others, a lot of the teacher saying stuff to the students and them writing it down but behind it something didn’t seem quite right.

“Ok for your next assignment. I need you to go into groups of two.” Mr. Roberts announced loudly “if you can’t find a partner then I will assign you one.”

Mr. Roberts started to write the assignment on the board as Daniel felt a tap on his shoulder. He turns around and sees Dawn standing awkwardly near him.
“Hey.” She said softly.
“Hey.” He replied.

Dawn sat at the empty desk next to him. She seemed a lot more nervous then he did.

“I saw you over here flying solo and wondered if you had a partner yet?” she said “’cause it’s kind of hard to me a team of two when there is just one of you.”

Daniel chuckled. He liked her quirky sense of humor
“Not yet. Want to come be my study buddy?” he asked.

She nodded with nervous excitement and opened her book. Even though he was concentrating on writing out of the corner of his eye he noticed that Dawn kept looking at him.

“I want to ask you something.” She said softly ”actually I kinda wanted to ask you this for a while.”

Daniel new this speech it sounded freakishly closed to the one he practiced in his head on a daily basis. Dawn moved in closer.

“I was wondering . . . am I boring you?”
Daniel looked at her closely and asked “what?”

“Am I boring you Mr. Foster?” asked Mr. Roberts loudly waking Daniel with a start. Daniel looked around to room to see every set of eyes staring at him. The ones that worried him the most were the ones that belong to Mr. Roberts.

“No Mr. Roberts” replied Daniel in a tone that was too high for his own good.
“Then why did you decide to your time in this class to catch up on your sleep?”

Daniel froze in fear. He couldn’t move or speak he sat there opening and closing his mouth hoping that some time sound would come out. Mr. Roberts folded his arms impatiently.

“Go to Principal Woods office maybe he can get an answer out of you.”

Daniel sat patiently in the office of Principal Robin Wood. This ritual is not unfamiliar to him since this would now make it the tenth time he had been sent there. In any other situation being somewhere ten time means that you might get a free sandwich or five buck off a movie but in this case it means that you are looking at suspension time. Principal Wood entered his office and, when seeing Daniel sitting in front of his desk, folded his arms menacingly.

“So the sleepy wander has returned,” quipped Principal Wood, ”Why have you been sent here this time? Wait let me guess you decide to turn another one of your classes into a bed and breakfast am I close?”

Daniel shrugged “I wasn’t eating”

Principal Wood moved to behind his desk and sat down. He interlaced his fingers calmly on his desk.

“That might be true but it’s not your diet I’m concerned about. I’ve been getting reports from most of your teacher saying that you’re having trouble staying awake for your classes. And one confusing report saying that they found you sleeping in the dirty towel laundry basket in the girls locker room” He said calmly

“That was taken out of context.” Daniel rushed in

Principal Wood sighed and leaned back in his chair. “What’s going on with you Danny? When you first arrived here I heard nothing but glowing comments. Now not a day goes by where I hear that Daniel Foster can barely function during his classes.”

Daniel sat silently. He could try explaining the truth but since he barely believes the truth himself how was he going to explain it to someone else. Principal wood sensed that he wasn’t going to get an answer any time soon.

“Listen. I am not the enemy here, no one in this school is. We just want to try and get to the bottom of what’s going on.” Principal Wood commented.

He lent forward confidently hoping for an answer. He sensed that Daniel wasn’t going to give him today.

”Look take the rest of the day off, get some sleep tomorrow morning first thing I want you to go see the school Councilor okay.”

Daniel nodded softly. He collected his books and headed for the door

“This is your last chance Danny.” Principal Wood said before he left the room “After this no more favors.”

Daniel left. Principal Wood left his office and moves to the cubical of Buffy Summers, the School Councilor. Buffy was busy writing down some notes when Principal wood knocked on the Dividing Wall of her Cubical. She looked up at him and smiled in an employee sought of way.

“What’s up?” she asked friendly

“Buffy I’m going to need you in a little earlier tomorrow I have a special case for you.”

“Sure who’s the student?” she asked checking her appointment book

“Daniel Foster. He’s been having trouble staying awake through his classes.”

“Well maybe we should just give him some coffee before he comes to school it works for me.” Joked Buffy, writing down the appointment

Principal Wood looked at her curiously

“I don’t think it’s a good idea giving our students more caffeine.”
