Tru Slaying: Part 1

Part 1:

Tru Davies watched in awe as her brother placed a twenty on the table.

“This one’s on me,” he said.

“Who are you and what have you done with my real brother?” Tru asked, only half joking.

Harrison smiled. “I got a job.”

Tru’s eyes widened. “Get out,” she said.

“Don’t faint yet,” Harrison said. “It’s not permanent or anything. I’m just helping my neighbor paint this apartment complex. One of the guys that was supposed to help him sprained his hand so he asked me if I could give him a hand.” He chuckled. “No pun intended.”

Tru rolled her eyes. “When did you start?”

“Yesterday. But the job probably won’t last more than a week. After that I’ll start looking for something more permanent.”

Tru doubted that very much, but she kept her mouth shut and continued smiling.

“You want me to walk you home?” Harrison asked. “It’s on my way.”

Tru shook her head. “I think I’m gonna hang out here for a while.”

“Ok,” Harrison said.

When he was gone, the waitress reappeared.

“Can I get you anything else?” she asked.

Tru was about ready to say ‘no’ when the waitress started naming off the kinds of pies they had.

She ended up ordering peach pie with ice cream on the side and a refill on her coffee.

After the waitress left, an attractive black man slid into the booth across form her.

“Sorry I’m late,” he said.

“Okay,” Tru said slowly. “Do I know you?”

“”Oh, so you’re a comedian now?” He asked, shaking his head. “Did Willow get an address on that girl yet?”

Tru looked at him curiously. “I really have no idea who you are,” she admitted.

“Come on Faith,” he said. “We’ve already been over this You know I’m not into the ‘two strangers meet in a bar’ roll playing thing. At least not now. Maybe when we get a little time off. But for right now, cut the bull. Besides,” he added. “This is a diner.”

The waitress returned with Tru’s pie and refilled her coffee cup. “Can I get you anything?” she asked the man.

“Coffee,” he said. “And a menu.”

The waitress smiled and said she’d be back in a minute.

“Look,” Tru said, “whoever you are, I don’t know who you think I am, but I can assure you that you’re wrong. Now, would you please...” She stopped when she saw the expression on his face.

“You’re not Faith,” he said, “are you?”

Tru shook her head.

He stood up. “I am so sorry,” he said. “It’s just that you look so much like her you could be her twin.”

“This isn’s some obscure pick-up line, is it?” Tru asked.

“No, I really thought you were her.”

“Then how come you don’t anymore?”

He pointed to her arm “She’s got a tattoo right there.”

“Oh,” was all Tru could think to say.

“I’m sorry,” he said sincerely.

“Don’t worry about it,” Tru said.

He found a table close to the door and sat down.

“Where’s your friend?” the waitress asked when she returned with his coffee and a menu.
Tru pointed to the booth where the man had sat down.

“Lover’s quarrel?” The waitress asked with a knowing smile.

“Not exactly,” Tru said. “Can I get this to go?” She asked, indicating the pie.

***

“You’re kidding,” Faith said.

“No,” Robin told her. “I really though she was you.”

“This is it,” Willow announced, stopping in front of apartment 3B.

Faith knocked.

After about a minute Kennedy said, “I don’t think she’s home.”

Willow looked at her watch. “It’s a little after three now. Maybe she’s at work.”

“We could try back later,” Faith suggested.

“Or we could find out where she works and pay her a visit there,” Kennedy said.

“Yeah,” Robin said. “But, on the way can we stop somewhere and get a bite to eat? I missed lunch to day since someone,” he looked pointedly at Faith, “stood me up.”

“Not my fault,” Faith told him. “It took Willow longer than she had planned to find the girls address. Plus, your directions to the dinner? Crap. I got lost. Never did find it.” She paused. “But,” she added. “It’s not like you were alone or anything. You had this woman you Claim looks like me to keep you company.”

“For like two minutes ” Robin said. “Then I realized it wasn’t you.”

“It took you two minutes to figure out it wasn’t me?” Faith asked.

Willow and Kennedy exchanged an amused glance.

“And they say they’re not together,” Willow smiled.

“Come on,” Kennedy said, taking her had. “Lets get out of here before the neighbors start coming out to see what’s going on.”

***

Tru kind of smiled when she was the guy from the diner later that evening at the coffee shop near the morgue.

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear you were following me,” she told him.

He looked up from his notes. “Hey It’s you ” He said, smiling. “Sorry about earlier.”

“Did your friend ever show up?”

He shook his head. “But we did meet up later.”

“That’s good,” Tru said.

Kennedy and Willow entered the coffee shop and sat down at the table with Robin.

“She wasn’t there,” Willow said. She looked at Tru. “When did you change your clothes?”

“She’s not Faith,” Robin explained. “She’s the girl from the diner.”

“Oh,” Willow said, looking closely at Tru.

“I know,” Robin agreed.

“Huh,” Kennedy said. She turned to Robin. “You sure this isn’t some obscure practical joke you’re trying to play on us?” She asked.

“Nope,” Willow said when she saw Faith walk up behind Tru.

“What the...” Faith said when she got a good look at Tru.

“You must be Faith,” Tru said.

“Uh huh,” Faith said. “And you must be the woman that looks like me.”

“How’d you guess?” Tru joked.

“Call it a hunch,” Faith said.

There was an uncomfortable silence. When someone finally spoke up, it was Tru.

“Well, it was nice meeting you, but I’ve got to get back to work. Breaks almost over. You know how that goes.”

“Yeah,” Faith said.

“Told you so,” Robin said smugly after Tru left.

“That was... creepy,” Faith said. “Hey, is there a such thing as a shape shifting demon?”

“Not that I’m aware of,” Willow said. “Why?”

“Because she just looked too much like me for it to be a coincidence.”

“Not really,” Willow said. “It happens all the time on tv. Two people that have never seen each other before meet and find out they’re long-lost identical twins.”

Faith rolled her eyes. “Yeah,” she said. “Only difference is, the characters on those shows are played by the same actor.”

***

“Sorry I’m late,” Tru said. “I just ran into that guy from the diner.”

“Really?” Davis asked, taking the cup of coffee she held out to him.

“Yeah. And I saw the girl he thought I was.”

“Did she look anything like you?”

“Very much in fact. It was a little eerie. Like an episode of The Twilight Zone, only in real life.”

“Oh, before I forget. You had a couple visitors while you were out.”

“Visitors?” Tru asked. “Who?”

“They didn’t say.”

“Well, what did they say?”

“That they would be back later. I told them you were on break and should be back soon.”

“Why didn’t they wait?”

“Don’t know,” Davis said.

“Well, I’ll worry about it later. We should probably get to work.”

“In theory,” Davis said. “There’s only one problem with that.”

“And that would be?”

“There’s nothing to do.”

“Oh. Well, that’s good. Right?”

“I suppose,” Davis said.
“So, what are you working on?”

“I... uh...” Davis said uncomfortably.

Tru leaned over and examined the computer screen. “Okay,” she said slowly. “Since when have you been into online dating?”

“I’m not,” Davis insisted. “I just thought I’d check it out. It’s not like I joined or anything.”

Tru laughed. “You make it sound like a cult.”

“You never know,” Davis said. “It might be.”

Tru rolled her eyes. “Sure Davis. If you say so.”

***

“Okay. That wasn’t part of the plan,” Kennedy said.

“We need a plan,” Willow said. “Anybody got any ideas?”

“I’d suggest we run, if we weren’t surrounded,” Robin said.

“Then we fight,” Faith said. “There’s only about a dozen of them,” she said. “I think our odds are pretty good.”

***

“We’ve got a pick up,” Davis said.

“Figures,” Tru said. “Just when I was finally starting to relax. I suppose you want me to go?”

Davis nodded.

“Why haven’t you found someone to replace Jack yet?” Tru asked as she followed Davis to the elevator.

“I’ve been looking,” Davis told her. “It’s not really an easy job to fill, you know.”

Tru sighed.

They got on the elevator.

“What’s the address?” Tru asked after they were seated in the van.

“It’s only a couple blocks away,” Davis said.
“We’re here,” he said a couple minutes later.

Tru got out of the van and walked toward the bodies while Davis went to talk to the on scene officers.

“What have we got?” Davis asked.

“I’ve never seen anything like it before,” the older officer said. “They look like they were torn apart.”

“Animal attack?” Davis speculated.

“That would be my guess,” the younger officer said.

“How many?”

“Three,” the younger officer said. “And one survivor.”

“What did the survivor have to say?”

“Nothing. She’s unconscious.”

“Davis,” Tru called. “I need you over here.”

Davis thanked the officers and excused himself.

“What is it?” He asked, bending down next to the bodies.

“This is the guy from earlier,” Tru told him.

“And the other two?”

‘I... haven’t looked at them yet,” Tru admitted.

Davis stood up and walked over to the other two bodies.

“Tru,” he said a few seconds later. “These are the women that came in earlier looking for you.”

“What?” Tru asked, glancing over at the bodies of Willow and Kennedy.

***

“Do you want to take a break?” Davis asked.

“Can you get by without me for a little while?” Tru asked. “I was gonna stop by the hospital for a minute. See how Faith is doing.”
“Sure,” Davis said.

***

“I’m looking for a woman that came in here earlier tonight,” Tru told the nurse on duty.

“Name?” The nurse asked without looking up from her paperwork.

“Faith...”

Crap, Tru thought, suddenly realizing that she had no idea what the woman’s last name was.

The nurse stopped writing and looked up at her.

“Oh,” the nurse said. “You must be her sister.”

“Yeah,” Tru said. “Did she wake up?”

“A few minutes ago. Room 314. But make it quick because visiting hours are over in eight minutes.”

“Thanks,” Tru said.

A few seconds later she was knocking on the door to room 314.

The door opened and a police officer stepped out into the hall.

“Can I help you?” He asked.

***

“Please,” Faith pleaded. “Just let me go. I don’t want to hurt you guys.”

“I’m afraid we can’t do that Faith,” one of the officers said. “You are under arrest for...”

Faith cut him off with a right hook, then quickly executed a perfect round house kick, knocking the other two officers on their rear ends.

“I tried to warn you,” Faith said.

She headed for the door.

“Freeze ” One of the officers said.

Faith turned around to see all three officers with their guns pointed at her.

She raised her hands and sighed.

***

“What did she do?” Tru asked.

“You don’t know?” The officer asked.

“We haven’t exactly kept in touch,” Tru lied in an attempt to back up her ‘sister’ story.

“She broke out of prison.”

Tru’s eyes widened. “What was she in for?”

“Murder.”

“Oh,” was all she could think of to say.

***

“Are those gonna hold her?” One of the cops asked. “She seems unnaturally strong for her size.”

“They will now,” the doctor replied.

“Did that stuff knock her out?”

The doctor nodded. “She should be out for a while.”

“Good,” the officer said.

“Let’s get going boys,” another officer said. “I’d like her to locked up before she wakes up.”

“Yeah,” the third officer agreed. “I don’t even want to think about what she would’ve done to us if she had wanted to hurt us.”

***

Tru was just about to leave when the door to room 314 opened and an unconscious Faith was pushed out by two officers.

Tru stepped out of the way and looked down at Faith. “Is she ok?”

“She’s fine,” the doctor said. “We had to sedate her.”

“Oh,” Tru said, still looking at Faith as they pushed her by.

Faith’s eyes suddenly flew open and she looked up at Tru.

“She’s awake,” one of the officers said, alarmed.

“That’s impossible,” the doctor said.

“Help us,” Faith said.

***

Tru sat up in bed, startled.

“What the HELL was that?” she wondered aloud.
