Buffy’s vision blurred as she tried to stand up. She was bleeding from minor wounds all over her body, and her head felt like it was used to replace a wrecking ball. She felt a hand grip harshly on her neck and pull her the rest of the way up into standing position.
“Get up Buffy. I’m not finished with you yet.”
Buffy had tears glistening in her eyes. ‘why me?’ she thought. Buffy had every right to wonder why it was happening to her. Model student with high honors, head cheerleader, perfect daughter. But that’s not what he thought. Buffy felt his fist connect with her jaw sending her down to the floor again.
Whimpering she tried to stand, and failed. “I’m so sorry.” She repeated in a whisper for what felt like the thousandth time in the last half hour. She had no idea what had made him so mad but that was how it always was. He kicked her in the ribs. Hard.
“WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?” He screamed in her face. “I’m so sorry” She repeated yet again.
“No your not. Your just worthless.” And with that being said he left her room, then the house. Probably going to a bar.
“Good morning!” said Willow as she met Buffy at her locker. She immediately realized something was wrong with her best friend and the happyness in her eyes and voice faded quickly. “Oh god. Buffy. What’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong silly.” She replied with forced lightness in her voice as she fixed the hem of her sweatshirt, and rearrange the huge sunglasses on her face. She smeared on more violet lipstick and shut her locker door. She never wore this much makeup and had wished she’d have stayed home today. “Hey I got to get to class.”
Willow eyed her friend in confusion. Buffy had always told her everything but she couldn’t shake the feeling that Buffy had been lying to her about something important for some time. “I just don’t know what I am supposed to do Spike.” Willow said. “Somethings wrong I am sure about that, but I don’t know what and she won’t tell me.” It was lunch and Willow confided in Spike because he was another friend of Buffy’s and would keep his mouth shut about what she said.
“What do you think might be going on or am I the only person who sees something wrong here?” Willow said. She had tears in her eyes because she was stuck on this issue. Being one of the sharpest people in the school she was rarely puzzled and it made her uncomfortable. Spike sighed at her desperation to know what was going on with her best friend.
“Well, ‘he said, “I do notice she’s been acting weird ever since her father came back from that business trip. She’s always wearing clothes that are too big or that show no skin. Maybe he doesn’t want her to expose herself so much?” Spike did a bad job trying to cover up the fact that he really had been paying attention and did see things he didn’t like. Buffy seldomly went out with the gang anywhere, and she seemed afraid to spend any time away from home, yet she always welcomed the school day and the time away from home.
Willow saw the care in his eyes and heard it in his voice every time he spoke about her. She had also realized he had been paying special attention to Buffy for quite some time. “You like her don’t you?” she asked.
“Well, she is Buffy. Everyone likes Buffy.” He said with a little laugh, trying to escape the question. He looked at Willow who was staring at him in disbelief. “What?” he said shifting uncomfortable. “Okay look Red, this stays between us. Got it? Under no circumstances is she to find out.”
