Alone

I stand to the side of the room watching,
As they talk and laugh.
I watch with insightful eyes,
Seeing things so differently.
I used to be oblivious,
To what surrounded me.
But now the fun has vanished,
Gone without a trace.

Now I watch silently,
And I feel like I don’t belong.
I’m so alone,
Nobody sees my pain.
No one knows my sorrow,
Nobody knows that it’s there.
Beneath the cracking smile,
Beneath the too peppy personality.

It is mine,
All mine to bear.
Nobody sees me here,
Standing in the shadows.
Never in the light,
Not anymore.
Not since I became different,
Unique.

They don’t see the difference,
They don’t know I’m not the same.
They can’t see the glass that separates us,
Keeping me sane.
They can’t see why my grades are slipping,
Or why I’m skipping school.
They don’t know of my duty,
My secret.

No one knows the pressure,
No one knows the strain.
No one knows the feeling,
No one knows the pain.
To live between the worlds,
Never fitting in either.
On the outside,
Looking in.

Saving the world without a thought,
Knowing that it could be your last.
Only knowing that it is your duty,
So you have to.
And knowing that no one will know,
How you died.
You’ll die a hero,
And no one will know…
