Part Seven

6:45 on the road to Sunnydale High

Willow walked alone on the way to school. As usual in Sunnydale it was a bright sunny day. Birds sang, dogs barked, and grass grew. She wore her red T-shirt and her overalls as she carried her books. From up behind her someone put their hands over her eyes.

“Guess who,” the familiar voice asked and she could not help but giggle and smile.

“Xander,” she said in mock annoyance.

“Yeah but keep guessing,” Xander replied as he keep his hands over her eyes.

“A really weird guy with scruffy hair?”

“Hey it’s not scruffy,” he said letting her go. She playfully hit him on the arm and he mocked falling into the street.

“Whoa Supergirl, don’t make me get the kryptonite.”

“What are you doing here, we never walk to school anymore,” She asked giving him a Willow smile.

“Yeah and I figured it was time to change all that,” he said returning his own Xander smile, “Carry your books?”

“Oh um well sure,” she said handing them to him, “Your being almost like a gentleman.”

“Thanks, I think,” he replied to her as he took the books from her, “So how are you and Oz doing?”

“Oh were of the good and stuff,” she said as they walked together, “how are you and…well you?”

“Living up the single life, you know how it goes,” he said in an arrogant voice trying not to look down trodden.

“Sitting at home reading comic books listening to country music?”

“Damn, you do know how it goes.”

She watched them as they walked. They never saw here from her hiding spot but she was there almost right next to them the whole time. She knew she could easily take Xander out of commission and get to Willow but it would cause a scene and in the daylight it was just to big a risk. Faith would wait for another time, a time when she could surprise the little red head. She scurried off back to her apartment intent on catching some sleep.

“So what was in the Mayor’s files,” Xander asked as they neared the school.

“Well it’s all encrypted so I’m not sure yet, but I hope it’s something on the ascension.”

“Yeah well that’s the least of are worries now.”

“Yeah there is Faith too.”

“Actually I was talking about the math test today.”

“Oh,” Willow said, as they both grew silent at the mention of Faith. They both wanted to ask so much, but both finished the walk to school in an awkward silence.

“And that’s all of it,” Giles asked as he rubbed his chin and looked at Buffy.

“Every freaky detail of my freaky dream,” she replied as they sat in his office.

“And you are absolutely certain the man that aided you in the alley was Trevor?”

“I’m certain,” Buffy said leaning on her hand, “so what do you think?”

“Well if it’s all true it’s quite disturbing,” he said as he took off his glasses and held them to his mouth.

“To say the least,” Buffy said looking at him, “so is it possible?”

“Well I have heard of the council hiring out and training bounty hunters and mercenaries or taking in survivors of massacres.”

“Why is that?”

“Well Buffy there is usually only one Slayer at a time, barring the present situation that is, and she can only be in one place at any given time so…”

“So the council trains and pays people to fight them.”

“Its not done often mind you, only when drastically needed.”

“But those people were infested with demons or something, I could tell.”

“Yes that and the whole part about Kendra some how bonded to Trevor is the disturbing part I would say.”

“So you think it’s possible she really is guiding him?”

“Buffy I’ve learned that on the Hellmouth anything is possible.”

“So how should we approach him?”

“Good question, he may not be totally aware of what he is, I say only you and I should talk to him,” he said as he put his glasses back on. “The others don’t need to hear any of this right now and frankly the whole notion of people in the council using magic that black frightens me.”

“Yeah it gives me the wiggins too.”

“So we are agreed then, I will send the others on various tasks during study hall and we will talk to him?”

“Sounds good to me.”

“What sounds good,” Wesley said as he walked into Giles office, “if I may ask?”

“Um having tonight off so I can party right Giles?” Buffy asked half trying to actually get the night off.

“Ah well I ah…” Giles said stammering

“Buffy you know full well Fridays are one of the worse nights for attacks by vampires, as your watcher I hear by order you to patrol the Bronze.”

“Ah yes Buffy I am forced to agree.”

“Well looks like you got me Wes,” she said snapping her fingers and getting up to leave.

“Well you know I don’t like to be harsh but duty is duty.” Buffy and Giles gave each other a “Oh brother” look as she went to class.

7:45 Trevor’s Home

Trevor rolled out of bed groggily. He knew he was already going to miss first period. He felt silly pretending to be back in high school and having to get up early again but it was all part of the job. He had tried to push the weirdness of the previous night out of his mind and had for the most part succeeded.

“It is good dat you have awakened, your very late for school today” Kendra’s spirit said as it sat in the chair next to his bed. Trevor jumped just a little as he tried to retain his cool exterior. Vamps he was use to, ghosts where not in his area of expertise.

“Thanks for dropping in,” he said as he got to his feet in his shorts and old T-shirt and glared at her, “I’d offer you some breakfast but something tells Trix are not for undead.”

“You can make all de jokes you want but ya need to be on your way,” she said as she stood up and turned around, “Now if ya would please um dress yourself.”

“Well glad to see your not a peeping Tom ghost,” he said as he dressed in blue jeans and a gray T-shirt with a Spider-Man symbol on it that he didn’t bother to tuck in.

“You will find I will be dropping in on ya from time to time, I am your guide now dat the demon in you is gone.”

“Just great, you know all the way home I had to listen to you tell me how I had this demon the council put in me so lets not go down that route again,” he said combing his hair.

“You act as if you are not even mad at dem,” she asked as she looked at him questioningly.

“Well of course I’m mad,” he said slamming the comb down on the dresser, “but I find it best to just shut things like this out until the job is done.”

“Oh you mean de murder of Faith?”

“I hardly consider it murder, she is a killer.”

“So far only by accident, ya don’t need to stoop to her level Trevor.”

“Spare me the talk on the moral dilemma of killing killers.”

“To kill her is to become her Trevor.” Her words seemed to have an effect on him. He looked down then over and up at her.

“I…I know, but I can’t just let her roam around free.”

“Den you know what you must do.”

“Yeah, capture her and send her butt packing back to the council so…”

“…They can do the same thing to her that they did to you and your comrades.”

“We don’t know that.”

“Believe me, the ones who did to you what was done will find a way to her.”

“So I just sit around and do nothing?”

“It is for you to find your own way,” she said disappearing, “but know that she will meet her fate with or without you.”

“Well gee thanks that helps a bunch,” he said sarcastically as he grabbed his stuff and hurried to school.
