Scars: Hidden Pasts

Buffy sat at the kitchen counter, while William looked for something to eat.

“So love, what’s your pleasure?” William asked.

“What do you have that qualifies as junk food?”

“Not much, I’m afraid. Jenny is kind of a health nut,” he said, laughing.

“Okay, well you have peanut butter,” she said taking the jar out of the cabinet, “Do you have Oreos?”

“Oreos? Yeah, I think so,” he said opening a cabinet and pulling out a package, “Here they are.”

They both sat at the counter and Buffy grabbed an Oreo and dipped in to the peanut butter and in response William gave her a weird look.

“What?” Buffy asked, “You’ve never had Oreos and peanut butter together.”

“No,” he said as he grabbed a cookie and followed her lead, “Good.”

“I know.”

“So what brings you to England, pet?”

“Giles didn’t tell you?” Buffy said, surprised.

“No,” he said; shaking his head.

“I’d rather not talk about it. What about you what’s your deal?”

“My deal?”

“Yeah, you’re like what 17 and you dress like a middle-aged man.”

“I do not.”

“You look like a mini-Giles.”

“Alright, well then how should I dress,” he asked but Buffy just shrugged in response.

“Why are you here?” Buffy asked, wondering why William was spending the summer with his Uncle and not his family.

“I live here.”

“What about your parents?” Buffy asked, regretting the question the minute it came out of her mouth.

“I’d rather not talk about,” he said. Buffy just looked at him, “We’re not best friends and I’m not sharing.” He got up and walked away leaving Buffy alone in the kitchen.

Buffy didn’t understand William. She could usualally figure people out but he was different, complicated. The one thing she did realize was she had hit a nerve; his parents.

The next morning Buffy woke up, took a shower, and got dressed. She donned a pair of jeans and a lacey pink camisole and a light zip up sweat shirt. Before she left her room she took one last look in the mirror to make sure all her bruises were covered in makeup and went down stair for breakfast; running into to William outside her room.

“Hey,” Buffy said.

“Morning, love,” he said, continuing to walk towards the stairs. He was dressed differently today. He had decided Buffy was right. There was no reason he should be dressing like a middle-aged librarian. Instead he wore a pair of ripped jeans and a black button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

“Listen,” Buffy said, putting her hand on his arm to stop him, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked about your parents it’s not any of my business.”

“It’s okay love. No need to apologize. Just bad memories is all.”

“I understand.”

“Yeah, I know you do,” he said and truly believed she did. He didn’t know much about Buffy but he figured she did understand what he meant; unlike most people their age.

“Hey, listen I was wondering," she said as they walked downstairs, “If maybe you’d give me a tour of England. See the sites.”

“Sure, love,” he said with a smile. She wanted to spend time with him; most girls didn’t want to give him the time of day but she actually wanted to spend the whole day with him. William was thrilled.

“Morning,” Jenny said as they entered the dining room.

“Where’s Giles?” William asked.

“He had to go to work.”

“What does he do?” Buffy asked as she sat down at the table, her seat across from William.

“He owns a publishing house,” Jenny said as she poured Buffy a glass of orange juice.

“We were thinking of going out today; so Buffy could see the sites,” William told her.

“That’s a wonderful idea,” Jenny said, sitting down to eat her breakfast.

Buffy had never had, nor had she ever been to a house that had a maid or whatever it was Jenny was but she thought it was probably a little unorthodox for her to sit at the table but Buffy was glad she did. She was never one for doing things the way everyone thought they should be done and besides Buffy liked Jenny and she could tell Giles did too; he treated her more like a wife then an employee.

“Well, we should probably go,” William said after they had finished breakfast.

“Have a good time,” Jenny told them as they left; headed towards the garage to find a car they could drive to London.

*******************************************
They entered the garage and Buffy was amazed. Giles had a lot of cars, all of which were sporty. She had expected him to drive a Volvo or something not a corvette.

“So which one do you think we should take out for a spin?” William asked a mischievous glint in his eye. For someone who was supposed to be a mini Giles; they were quite different people Buffy thought.

“I like that one,” Buffy said indicating the cherry red corvette.

“Nice choice.”

“I didn’t expect Giles to have these kinds of cars,” she said.

“Yeah, well one day he went to the car dealer intent on buying another Giles mobile but instead he came home,” with this William said as he opened the car door for Buffy and the got in himself, “He said it seduced him all sporty and red.”

“Little two door tramp,” Buffy said as they both laughed and William opened the garage door with the opener located in the car and began to pull out in to the driveway.

“Hey, do you think Giles has any good music in his car?” Buffy asked.

“Don’t know why don’t you have a look.”

Buffy began to look around the car but she didn’t find anything so instead she turned on the radio and searched for a song that interested her. Finally she found something and raised the volume beginning to bop her head to the music. William smiled at her as they drove out of the estate gates and towards London. The music blaring.
