Somewhere Else: Chapter 5

“I come baring sustenance,” Xander said when he entered the magic shop thirty-five minutes later.

“Where’s Anya?” Buffy asked.

“She didn’t come back?” Xander asked, a look of concern crossing his face.

Buffy shook her head.

“Where’s Willow?”

“Laying down in the back. Apparently this place has the same set up as our Magic Box back home, but instead of a workout room in back, there’s an office complete with a couch that folds out into a bed.”

Xander dropped the bags of food on the counter. “I’m gonna go out and see if I can find Anya.”

“Actually,” Buffy said. “Maybe you should stay here and keep Will company. This is a strange place and there’s no telling what dangers may be lurking out there. It would probably be better if I went.”

“Ok,” Xander conceded, picking the bags up again and heading for the back room.

“That was easy,” Buffy said when she spotted Anya sitting on the curb less than a block away.

Anya looked up at her, but didn’t say a word.

“Thought you’d be harder to find,” The slayer admitted.

“Like I’d run off in a strange world. There might be more bunnies here.” She stopped, suddenly looking horrified.

“I think it’s safe to say that this is a bunny-free zone. I’ve seen people walking around. I doubt they’d be out this late at night if there were killer bunnies lurking about.”

“Oh,” Anya said.

“You wanna talk about it?”

Anya looked confused. “The bunnies?”

Buffy smiled. “No, why you ran off.”

“Oh, that.”

“So?”

Anya sighed. “I kind of had a fight with Xander.”

“I figured that much. What about?”

“Do you really care, or are you just trying to be nice?”

“Both actually, but mostly the first.”

“Fine. He wanted me to be nicer to Willow. I was kinda blaming her for everything. I know it’s not all her fault. I was angry when Xander left me at the altar. I even tried to get one of you guys to wish something bad would happen to him since I had my power back.”

“Why didn’t you just make a wish?”

“Vengeance demons can’t grant their own wishes,” Anya told her. “Otherwise, he never would’ve been born.”

“That’s all you could come up with? Over a thousand years of granting wishes for scorned women and that’s all you could come up with?”

Anya smiled a little. “I guess I couldn’t bare to see anything really bad happen to him,” she admitted.

“It’s hard when you love someone and you can’t be with them.” Buffy said.

Anya silently agreed.

“You want to sit out here for a while before we go back in?”

ANya shook her head. “No. I think I’m ok now. Besides, I’m starving.”

“Is she still asleep?” Buffy asked.

Xander nodded. “Did you find her?”

“Yeah, she’s in the other room.”

“How is she?”

“She’s dealing,” Buffy said. “I think she needs a little time.”

Xander nodded.

“So, what did you get?”

Xander handed her a bottled water and a turkey sandwich. “There’s chips, Twinkies, and granola bars in the bag if you’re interested.”

“How did you pay for all this?” Buffy asked, amazed.

Xander smiled. “Let’s just say that the Xander Harris in this reality is going to have an interesting forty-three dollar charge on his debit card.”

“You didn’t,” Buffy said.

Xander’s grin widened. “Not really, I used cash.”

Buffy laughed.

“Is Anya gonna eat?”

“Yeah,” Buffy said. “I said I’d bring her something.”

Willow rolled over on the hide-a-bed.

“Hey,” Buffy said.

“Hey,” Willow replied groggily. “How long was I asleep?”

“Almost three hours.”

Willow sat up.

“You feel any better?”

“A little. I’m kinda hungry, though.”

Buffy grabbed the bag off the end table and handed it to her friend. “Courtesy of one Xander Harris.”

“Speaking of which, where are him and Anya?”

“Last time I saw them they were gathering more ingredients for the spell.”

“How are they getting along?”

“A little better. They had a little talk while you were asleep.”

“Are they gonna get back together?” Willow asked hopefully.

“I think it’s still a little soon to tell,” Buffy admitted, “but on the bright side, I think they may have come to an understanding. Plus, Anya has agreed to be nicer to you.”

“That’s a definite plus,” Willow said as she took a bit of her sandwich.

“So, do you feel up to doing the spell again?”

“After I eat,” Willow said.
