No More: Part 5

by Freddy

Buffy doesn't belong to me. It was all Joss's idea and belongs to him. Shelly and Karos do belong to me. I don't get paid for this, and it's all for fun.

“Night out on the town”

Two darkly dressed figures stood on a rooftop of the building next to the Bronze. It was of course Spike and Karos, plotting and waiting. Tonight they were going to kill the slayer. Tonight, they were going to celebrate, all thanks to a magical vile that would cancel her slayer powers. Tonight, was a long overdue night of victory.

“I almost had her once you know.” Spike informed Karos, his accent thicker then usual. “I had on her on the ground at her very own school and was about to apply the finishing blow.”

“What happened?” Karos asked, half entertained by Spikes story.

“Her mother hit me on the head with an ax.”

Karos laughed, and then pointed a long slender finger at the front door of the Bronze. “That’s them.”

“Yes, she and her friends come here to have fun. Hmm, it looks like they have a new friend with them tonight.”

“Good. That’s more to go around for us.”

“In time Karos. We do want to separate her from her friends. They have a nasty habit of interfering and helping her out.”

Down on the ground Buffy, Xander, Shelly, Willow and Oz walk into the Bronze. Buffy looked around. More memories of her slaying days popped up. She had killed the Vessel here in her first week in Sunnydale, thus saving the Bronze patrons from certain doom and stopping the Master from rising from his underground prison. She had fought with Angel here for the first time when the Master tried to turn them against each other, but the plan didn’t work. She shuddered. It had been her own stupid actions that turned Angel against her. Buffy tried to think of something funny to push Angel out of her thoughts. The seductive dance she had done with Xander popped into her head. She laughed to herself. That wasn’t her finest moment. She looked at Shelly and wondered what kind of memories the new slayer would create here.

The group danced, had a good time, socialized, talked about things that didn’t matter. Buffy was easing back into home. Sunnydale was a little less strange. The group went off to dance some more, but Xander didn’t go. He had been pre occupied with something, or someone. Buffy stayed at the table with him.

“What’s wrong Xander?” she asked. “You’re awfully quiet, and that’s very unlike you. Very unlike you.” Buffy jabbed him in the shoulder with her elbow, trying to cheer him up a little.

Xander nodded his head in the direction across the room. “Cordelia. She’s here.”

“Yeah, I’ve been meaning to ask you. What happened with you guys?”

“Not long after you skipped town for the summer we broke up. Willow was injured and I spent a lot of time with her in the hospital, while kind of neglecting Cord. And then to top it off I kind of declared my love for Willow. Didn’t sit to well with her.”

“Oh. You’re in love with Willow?” Buffy thought she might need a map to figure this out.

“No, I mean yes, I mean... well, it’s like this. I’ve known Willow for a long time and I’ve loved her for that long. She thinks I’ve never thought about what it would be like, us being together, but I have. I even tried to kiss her once.”

“But,”

“But we got interrupted by a vampire which you eventually destroyed. Anyway, it’s weird when you’ve been that close for that long. You don’t know exactly how to cross that line, or even if you should. That kind of scares me.” Xander took a sip of his soda. “When she was injured I got that feeling, you know, like lifes to short and stuff.” Buffy nodded. “And I told her I loved her and always had. Cordelia didn’t hang around to long after that.”

“But things don’t seem tense between you and Willow now.”

“Well, they were for a little bit, but she has Oz now and we chalked the whole thing up to temporary insanity and everyone was okay.” Xander took a deep breath. “But Cordelia, I hurt her Buffy. She’s been kind of hanging out with her old friends. She doesn’t talk to me or Will at all.”

“Wow. You got really deep tonight Xander. Are you sure your you?”

Xander finally smiled. “You tell anyone and your toast. You don’t have those slayer powers to protect you anymore.” Buffy laughed. It was the first time she had laughed at the thought of not being the slayer anymore. It was something she’d have to get used to. She also thought about how vulnerable she really was now. She’d be dead if Xander and Willow hadn’t had saved her from that vampire her first night back from Sunnydale. She shivered a little. There were more dangerous foes out there that wanted her dead.

Spike and Karos waited patiently on the rooftop.

“An ax, heh heh heh. That is a classic story Spike.” Karos said grinning, fangs glistening in the moonlight.
