Bad Boys Are...: 4

“Buffy?” Angel asked when she naswered the phone the next Friday night.
“What, Angel?” Buffy sighed.
“What’s up?”
“Nothing. Look, Spike is over, can I call you back?” Buffy asked, irritated that her steamy make out session with Spike had been interrupted.
“Sure. Talk to you later.” Buffy hung up the phone and turned back to Spike. He was laying next to her on the bed, his shirt off and his hair mussed.
“Angel?” Spike asked.
“Yeah. He just wanted to chat. We don’t do that much anymore,” Buffy said casually. She wrapped her arms around Spike and snuggled closer to him. They began kissing and touching each other.
“Hey. You wanna check out April’s party?” Spike asked, sitting up abruptly.
“What? Uh, yeah. Sure.” Buffy got up and went into the bathroom to change into appropriate party clothes. She chose to wear all black this time. A black, mock turtle neck, sleeveless shirt and a black mini with her black boots.
“Ready?” Spike asked. He looked perfect in his black tee shirt and faded blue jeans.
“Yeah,” Buffy nodded, kissing him softly.
“Mmm. This is why I love you,” Spike murmured. They set off. Once at the party they ran into Angel and Darla. They were standing at the drink table talking to April and some other people.
“Hey, April,” Spike nodded, glaring at Angel.
“Hi Spike.” Buffy smiled at Darla and Angel, but realized something wasn’t right. Angel and Darla usually found some way to be touching each other. IN a cute, not sickening kind of way. Holding hands, touching their arms together, something like that. Tonight, however they were at least a foot apart.
“Angel, can I talk to you for a sec?” Buffy asked. Spike was occupied with talking to April.
“Yeah.” They walked a short distance up the stairs and sat down in the hall across from each other.
“Did something happen with you and Darla?” Buffy asked, searching his eyes for a reaction.
“Yeah. We broke up this morning. It’s fine though. It was a mutual decision, ended on good terms. It’s not like we had some big blow-out fight or anything. It just wasn’t there anymore,” Angel shrugged. Buffy nodded.
“I’m sorry about how I treated you earlier. ON the phone and everything,” Buffy whispered. Angel reached out and grabbed her hand, rubbing his thumb across her knuckles.
“It’s okay. You know you can do no wrong in my eyes, Buffy. I’ll love you till the day I die,” Angel promised. Buffy’s eyes filled with tears and she hugged him tightly.
“Me too. I love you Angel, you’re my best friend,” Buffy said, tears streaming down her face.
“Buffy, what’s wrong. You’re not this big of a sap,” Angel pointed out. Buffy shrugged and wiped the tears from her eyes.
“It’s nothing, really. I just feel so confused. Like, Spike and I were making out tonight and then he just all of a sudden stopped and wanted to come here. And he drinks, a lot. I just don’t know. Anyway, I should go make sure he’s not worried.” Buffy stood up and straightened her skirt. Then she waved goodbye to Angel and ventured downstairs.
Her eyes caught on something when she turned the corner at the bottom of the stairs. Platinum blond hair with a hand entwined in it. Spike and April.
“You bitch,” Buffy growled, standing right in front of them.
“Buffy, oh God. Baby, I’m sorry,” Spike slurred. Buffy could tell that he was more drunk than usual.
“No, I don’t want to hear it Spike. I’m going home.” Buffy turned and started towards the door, catching Angel’s eye as she went. He had seen the whole thing and was seething.
“Buffy! Wait, please! Can we just talk about this? If you still want to break up with me when we’re finished, that’s your choice. Please?” Spike begged, following her out to his car.
“Fine. You get twenty minutes to explain yourself,” Buffy relented. Spike opened the door and then hopped in the car himself. Buffy was now so used to riding home with Spike when he was drunk that she hardly even thought about it anymore. They drove for a few minutes before Buffy realized that Spike was driving worse than usual. He was swerving a lot.
“Spike? Pull over,” Buffy demanded.
“Come on, luv. What’s wrong?” Spike asked.
“Spike, you’re seriously drunk. Pull over!” Buffy screamed. Spike turned to look at her and in the next instant everything slowed. Buffy saw bright head lights coming straight towards them. She reached out and braced herself against the dash and screamed. The lsat thing she saw was Spike’s shocked look. Then everything went black. The car flipped onto it’s roof and rolled five times, the car crunching more with each one. The other car spun off the road and into a shallow ditch, appearing to have minimal damage. Then the ambulance came.

Spike walked away from the accident unharmed. He was conscious when the medics and the police arrived. The cops allowed him to ride with Buffy to the hospital and find out how she was. She was not okay. She was unconscious and not stable. Her vitals were all over the place and she continued to come in and out of cardiac arrest. Buffy had listed Angel as her emergency contact, so the police called him on their way to the hospital.
“Mr. O’Connor, Buffy Summers has been in a serious accident. You’re listed as her emergency contact. Can you meet us at the hospital?” One of the officers asked Angel.
“Yes. Oh God is she going to be okay?” Angel asked frantically.
“We’re not sure.” Fifteen minutes later everyone was assembled at the hospital. Willow, Xander, Darla, Spike, and Angel. The moment Angel saw Spike, he hit him square in the jaw.
“You bastard! You were drunk! The only reason she rode home with you was because she wanted so badly to believe that you were a good person! I’m going to kill you!” Angel screamed. One of the cops ran over and restrained Angel while the other took Spike into custody.
“Wait! I want to know how she is!” Spike cried.
“She’s stable, that’s all you get to know.” The police carted him down the hall. The doctors said that she was in a medically induced coma and that they could visit her one by one if they wanted. They would probably wake her up in twenty four hours. Everyone agreed that Angel should be first.
“Buffy? Oh God, sweetie. I can’t believe that asshole hurt you. I should have been there, I should have protected you. Why did you have to get hurt? God, Buffy. When I got that call, it was like my worst fear had been confirmed. I thought you were dead. Then I realized something. I love you, Buffy Summers, more than you can know. I need you in my life and I can’t go through it without you. Please, baby, be okay. I promise that I will never let anything or anyone hurt you ever again.” Willow laid a gentle hand on Angel’s shoulder and he grasped it.
“Are you okay?” Willow asked softly.
“If she’s okay I am. You can see her now,” Angel said, standing up.
“Stop brooding. I’ll only be a little while. I think the doctor said that one of us could stay with her tonight. We all think it should be you,” Willow said.
“Thanks. I appreciate it.” Angel walked out and left Willow to do the talking. Angel met one of the doctors in the hall.
“She’s going to be fine. The coma is just to give her body time to heal before her mind has to deal with the stress of what she’s been put through. An accident like this can be very mentally hard on people,” the doctor explained. Angel crossed his arms and met the doctor’s eyes.
“Why didn’t Spike get hurt. The driver. He walked away unscathed. Why?” Angel asked.
“A lot of times, when a person is intoxicated, their body is looser. When they’re in an accident like this, their body doesn’t tense, it rolls with the car and bends easier. When people are aware of what’s happening, they tense their bodies. It’s a natural defense reaction but it can also harm them because they don’t let their body go. That’s also why people who are instantly knocked unconscious tend to have more minor injuries. Buffy wasn’t unconscious until the car stopped rolling, which is when 99% of the damage was done,” the doctor explained again. Angel nodded.
“I’m staying with her tonight. Her parents are unreachable until next week. I’m really the closest she has to family right now,” Angel said.
“Okay. That’s fine. We’ll wake her up tomorrow evening around seven,” the doctor informed Angel.
“Thanks.” One by one everyone left. They all went home to stay up all night worried about Buffy. Angel sat up by her side for a while before crawling into bed and wrapping his arms around her gently.
“Sleep well, my love,” Angel whispered, kissing her lips lightly.
