Writers Block: The Enemy Within: Early Morning Inspiration

by MissEdith

I get writers' block a lot. It really sucks. I have only written one fanfic ever, and I don't know if I'll start another when I finish this one, because I don't have any other good ideas. This story started because I sat down and thought about what I would change about Btvs. The story just grew on its own from there. But that doesn't work for original fiction, which I write more of. What I have begun doing lately is to just sit down and think about what I need to happen in the scene I am trying to write. Then I just type. When I'm not feeling inspired, the writing often tends to be kinda dry and dull, but I constantly read the stuff I wrote before, and I am always changing it and making it better. But first I had to lay down the basic framework.

Also, I find that inspiration always comes either really late at night or really early in the morning, for me. Some of my best writing was written at 1 am while I was carrying on several IM conversations. It's odd because usually when I write spur of the moment stuff like that, I really have little to no idea what I am trying to accomplish with the scene. I just write, and it works.

I also talk to my friends and families about my stories, and ask them their opinions. This often helps me just by making me think about the possible directions for the story, even if I don't like any of their suggestions.

The fact that I am constantly reading books also helps me a lot. For one thing, it helps my writing style because I have read so many different styles, but it also gets me thinking about different worlds and characters and stories and all that good stuff.

redmoon's darkness idea sounds really good. I'll be sure to try it out next time I'm suffering from writers' block (as in next time I go to work on a story, probably).
