Writers Block: The Enemy Within: Gumboy's methods...
by gumboy
I have a couple of ways I get around writer's block:
The Lawnmower Man
Sounds stupid, but I've got a big yard to mow and the constant monotonous walking back and forth allows me to think about story ideas, plots, dialogue.
I guess the activity could be anything (Jogging, etc.) but I have to say that I've worked out more story angles this way than any other.
Non-Linear Writing
I used to write Linearly. That is I started at the beginning of the story and wrote to the very end of the story. Everytime I got to a point of the story where I had no idea what to put it.... that would be the end of it. If I had a story idea with a great ending but no beginning.... the story would die right there.
Now... I constantly write out of sequence. If I got a good idea for the middle portion of a story, I'll just go ahead and write it. I find it easier now to write out of sequence because then I get the scenes I want and it's easier for me connect the scenes together.
