Willow watched Xander catch up to Cordelia, and sighed. Despite Xander's assurances otherwise, someone did know about him and Cordelia. It was Willow, and it was breaking her heart.
She truly hadn't been snooping; she had been helping Ms. Calendar clean out the school's computers, saving all the relevant files on floppy just in case something went wrong with the operating system upgrade. Then she had found it. A poem. A love poem. By Cordelia. It was a piece of mushy nonsense, not even possessing technical merit. She had laughed at it, but the last lines had turned her blood to ice
As your lips touch mine
Forever
Xander
A love poem, to XANDER!!! She couldn't believe it, didn't want to. She had hoped that once he was over Buffy he would at least notice her, sweet, little, best bud Willow. But, no, he just skipped right over her and went for Little Miss Popularity.
She had had a fleeting hope then that maybe what was between Cordy and Xander was just one-sided, that he didn't return her feelings. So, justifying her actions to herself by saying she was helping Ms. Calendar, she went into Xander's files. And, what had he been doing during study hall when he was supposedly typing an essay?! Poetry worse than Cordelia's. Some of it was so saccharine that Willow wanted to laugh, but could only cry.
She could understand his fascination with Buffy; she was the VAMPIRE SLAYER for goodness' sake. But Cordelia??!! Computer Lords above, she was mean, conceited, and, she was, in no way, shape, or form, worthy of Xander!
Willow sighed, and forced herself to admit that Cordelia wasn't that unworthy. It was just that she, Willow, wanted to be the one that Xander loved. Her that Xander looked longingly at with those puppy brown eyes
But it wasn't
And so she sighed as Xander trotted off. A single tear slid down her cheek. Ignoring it, she went back to her reverie, and the pain she refused to let show.
* * *
But someone in the shadows saw her pain. Someone who understood her pain all too well. He felt it himself, and he would have given anything to wipe that tear off her cheek. But he could not, for, hate it as he may, she loved another. Sighing, Oz drifted back into the shadows.
