Cassandra: Part Eight
by Kelli Brown
“So, Cassandra used to be the Slayer.” Buffy was stunned. “I can’t believe this.”
“According to the research we’ve done. It would appear so.” Giles was trying to be as comforting as possible.
“And Angel was the one that did this?” Buffy asked.
“It would appear that way. Listen Buffy, there is no concrete evidence that all of this is true. However, taking the timeline into account, Cassandra’s extraordinary strength, and Mary Williams’ disappearance.” Giles stopped to choose his words carefully. “All of that evidence would point to our hypothesis being true. I believe that Cassandra is Mary Williams and Angel did turn her into a vampire.”
“It just doesn’t seem real. I know that Angel used to be a soulless vampire, and that he killed people just like all of the rest of them. I just never thought that I meet one of his victims.” Buffy shook herself out of her reverie. “Guys, I have to go home.” Buffy stood up and quickly walked out.

Earlier that night: 7:00pm:
Cassandra arrived at Mike’s apartment at seven o’clock. Before she knocked on the door, she noticed a note posted on the outside. It said, “Cassandra, Marie didn’t come home when she was supposed to and I’m kind of worried. Come right on in, I’ll be back soon....Mike.” [ Oh no, Mike shouldn’t be out wandering around Sunnydale at night. ] Cassandra looked at the small parking lot in front of the building. She hoped that Mike took his car. However, she saw his car. He had walked.
Cassandra knew that she had to go out looking for them. Even though she had no idea where they might be, she had to find them. Using skills that used to assist her in hunting down humans, Cassandra attempted to hone in on Mike’s particular blood scent. It was not an exact science, but it would give her some idea of how far he was and what direction to go to find him. Fortunately, the blood scent was strong, it would make things easier.
The blood scent led her north, toward the center of town. After one more hour of searching, Cassandra finally found Mike. [ Oh my God! No wonder his blood scent was so strong. ] She saw Mike dead in an alley. He had the tell-tale marks on his neck, signifying that it was a vampire kill. Laying there beside him was the dead body of Mike’s finance, Marie.
Cassandra just stood there staring at the bodies. From the look of the bodies, she guessed that they had not been dead too long. Cassandra had seen death so many times. Even after her soul was returned, seeing death did not really disturb Cassandra too much. However, this was different, this was a friend. These were not just nameless, faceless, victims.
Slowly, Cassandra walked away from the alley. She did not want to leave them, but she knew that she had to before someone saw her with two dead bodies. As she walked, Cassandra allowed herself no tears. Cassandra always believed that crying did no one any good. Even when her family was killed, she kept her grief inside. Tears were a weakness that she could not afford then, it was no different now. She had to remain calm and think. She could not allow the vampire that did this to live. However, she had no way to find out who did it. Cassandra felt helpless, it was a feeling that she did not like.
Cassandra walked about a mile toward the park. When she got there, she sat down on a park bench to think. After sitting there for about ten minutes, she heard someone walking toward her. Cassandra looked up and saw who was coming. Although his hair was different, she could recognize that face anywhere.
“Cassandra, it’s been a while.”
“Hello William.” Said Cassandra in a nonchalant voice. “Oh, I forgot, you prefer to be called Spike.”
Spike sat down next to Cassandra on the park bench. “How long have you been in town?”
“Long enough to know that you and Dru are here.”
“Yes, apparently long enough to also start beating up on my minions. I’ve heard things about you Cassandra. I dismissed them as rumors until I heard about last night’s incident.”
Cassandra looked straight ahead, not looking at Spike at all. “Oh really, what did you hear?” She stated in an amused voice.
“That you have a bloody soul! That you don’t kill anymore. I didn’t believe it until I heard about you protecting one of the Slayer’s friends.” Spike said with disgust evident in his tone.
Cassandra turned her head toward Spike. “Yes, I do have a soul.”
Spike got really angry. He got up from the park bench and started pacing. “I don’t believe this! First Angelus, now you! I was surprised enough when I found out about him. Just imagine, you and Angelus, two of the strongest and most vicious vampires around, going soft!”
Cassandra just listened to Spike’s rant. When Spike finally paused, Cassandra spoke. “Are you finished?” She asked in an incredibly calm manner.
Spike glared at her. “Are you going to start helping the Slayer as well? Just like Angelus.”
Cassandra got up from the park bench that she was sitting on and got inches from Spike’s face. “I wasn’t going to. I just came to town to do a little business. I had no idea you or Angelus was here.” Cassandra’s demon face then emerged. “Then, two friends of mine are killed tonight. I don’t know if I am going to help her or leave town. However, I am leaning toward helping the Slayer. I cannot live with myself if I know that I can help keep more people from dying, and I don’t do it.”
Spike stared at Cassandra for a second and shook his head. “You’re a piece of work. Just like Angelus, you spend over a hundred years killing and torturing all around Europe. Then, you suddenly get morals. It’s bloody unbelievable!” Spike yelled. His voice then got deadly quiet. “I could kill you.”
Cassandra smiled. “You could always try.” She said in a deadly serious, yet mocking, voice. Cassandra then turned around to walk away. As she walked away she called out, “Give my regards to Drusilla.”
