Episode 5 (149) - Bad Dog
Recap
Scene 1
{Buffy, Xander, and Dawn are waiting to pick Willow up at the airport.}
Buffy-I hope we can actually see her this time. It wouldn't be so good if we had to go through that thing again.
Xander-Yeah...me too. I hope we can see Willow and she can see us.
Dawn-We should though, right? Be able to see her?
Buffy-I guess.
Xander-I should've made another sign.
Buffy-With a yellow crayon?
Xander-Must you always mock the yellow crayon story?
Dawn-We must.
Xander-It was that story that saved the world.
Buffy-I thought it was more your love for Willow that saved the world.
Xander-Yeah, but I brought up the yellow crayon thing.
Dawn-Oh.
Xander-Look, there she is!
{Xander points and we follow his finger. Sure enough, Willow is standing over by the luggage area. Buffy, Xander, and Dawn go over to greet her.}
Buffy-Hey, Will.
{Willow turns around.}
Willow-Buffy!
{Willow reaches out to embrace Buffy. She then gives Xander and Dawn a quick hug as well.}
Xander-We can see you!
{Willow looks confused for a second.}
Willow-And I can see you too. Oh! There was that whole thing last time we were supposed to meet at an airport about us not being able to see each other.
Buffy-But we can see you now, so that's really good.
Willow-Yeah.
Dawn-It's good to see you.
Willow-It's good to see you guys too.
Buffy-Why don't we head back to our house and we can all play reunion.
Willow-Sounds good to me.
{Willow grabs one of her suitcases and Xander picks up the other one. Then the four of them walk out of the airport.}
Scene 2
{We see a young woman about the age of twenty walking down a dark alley. She looks worried and panicked as her steps grow larger and more hurried. There is the noise of crunching leaves and the woman turns around. There is a large bush nearby and she looks in it. Suddenly, she is attacked by a dog. The woman screams as she is ripped to shreds. Then, a few moments later the dog slowly grows larger until it assumes the shape and the appearance of the woman it attacked. Camera fades out.}
Opening Credits
Scene 3
{Buffy and Dawn walk in to door followed by Xander and Willow. Xander and Willow place the suitcases by the stairs as Buffy and Dawn sit down on one of the couches. Xander and Willow join them.}
Willow-So, what have you guys been up to?
Buffy-Well, you know how I said on the phone that things were pretty quiet around here as far as demons and things go?
Willow-Yeah. Did you jinx yourself?
Buffy-Oh yeah. We've come across and killed like...four demons since that phone call.
Willow-Whoa. Looks like no matter where you go, you can't ever really get away.
Buffy-It's my destiny. I could go to...Antarctica and I would still find demons.
Willow-I wouldn't doubt it.
Dawn-You come across any demons, Willow?
Willow-Oh. Nope...the campus is pretty demon free.
Xander-Well, that's about to change. We've been fighting demons about once a week...just like old times.
Willow-I don't mind. I miss the whole Scoobie gang thing we used to do. There's nothing more exciting than researching a demon in a book or the Internet.
Buffy-It's definitely exciting.
Dawn-Oh! I've been the one to be you. I mean, I've been doing all of the research about these demons on the Internet.
Willow-Really?
Xander-Uh, huh. Dawn's quite the little Willow.
Dawn-Hey, I learned from the best.
Willow-I always knew you'd be good at research.
Xander-I don't really know why I'm asking this, but how's Kennedy?
Willow-She's doing fine. In fact, she's the one who suggested I come see you guys.
Buffy-Oh?
Willow-Yeah. She could tell that I missed you even more than I first realized. I left right in the middle of midterms, but I don't care. I can always go back next semester and finish up my classes. You guys are way more important than college.
Xander-Well, it's good to know you like us more than a huge building, books, and professors.
{Willow smiles.}
Willow-I'd hope so.
Dawn-Why didn't Kennedy come with you?
Willow-She just didn't really want to. Even though she spent a lot of time with you guys, you're still more my friends than hers.
Dawn-She didn't want to see Buffy, uh?
{Willow looks at Buffy.}
Willow-Not really...sorry, Buffy.
Buffy-It's not like I really care. I don't really want to see Kennedy either.
Xander-So, you left her behind. Guess that means this is just a visit.
Willow-Well, yeah...but I guess is this demon stuff starts to get out of hand, I'll have to stay and help you guys out. You don't think there's a bigger evil behind all of these smaller demons do you?
Buffy-I'm not totally sure, but it does seem possible. It's like these demons know exactly where to find me and each one gets stronger and harder to fight. It's almost like someone is testing me or something.
Xander-Why would someone want to do that?
Buffy-To learn more about me. To learn how I react in a fight and stuff like that I guess.
Willow-So they can be better prepared if they have to face you themselves?
Buffy-I don't know. I didn't really think about it that much before. I just thought demons were coming after me. In the back of my mind the idea of a bigger evil behind them sat there, but it didn't really come out 'til just now.
Dawn-Well, I hope there's not some bigger evil than the First out there to fight.
Willow-Yeah, that wouldn't be good.
Xander-No. It wouldn't be good at all.
Scene 4
{Joyce and Andrew are in the basement. Andrew looks satisfied with something and Joyce looks impressed.}
Andrew-Do you really mean that?
Joyce-Of course I do. This new demon we're sending after Buffy is a very interesting demon.
Andrew-Technically, it's more like a Hell dog beast thing.
Joyce-Whatever. The point is they're going to have to do quite a bit of research to figure this one out.
Andrew-Yeah...I guess they will.
Joyce-But Willow's in town.
Andrew-She is?
Joyce-Yes. She just arrived today, for a visit. Right now she's planning on going back in about a week or so....unless the demon stuff gets out of hand and they need her help.
{Joyce smiles.}
Andrew-What?
Joyce-Well, we're controlling all of these demons that are going after Buffy. So, we can make them get out of hand.
Andrew-Why would you want Willow to stay? It means that there's one extra person to help them out. One extra person who happens to be a very powerful witch.
Joyce-If I want to kill Buffy, I need to be able to learn about her friends as well.
Andrew-Why?
Joyce-Why? Because they are very close. A few years ago I wouldn't need them to get to Buffy, but now I will. She's grown even closer to them and has learned to appreciate them. We need Willow to stick around.
Andrew-Okay. Can I go see her?
Joyce-See Willow?
Andrew-Yeah. I don't want to stay away from Buffy and Xander and Dawn for too long. They might start to think I'm involved with sending demons after them.
Joyce-No, they won't. They don't care about you, Andrew. If you just show up, they'll be annoyed. It's best you never see them again.
Scene 5
{Buffy enters her room with Willow close behind.}
Buffy-This is my room. I'd give you a tour, but there's not really that much to it. I have a bed and some drawers and stuff.
{Willow places her suitcases down.}
Willow-I think it's a great room, Buffy. Thanks for letting me stay in here.
Buffy-No problem. I wish we had a guest room or something though. This house isn't so big.
Willow-It's fine.
Willow-It's fine. Are you sure you actually want to sleep on the couch? The bed's big enough for both of us.
Buffy-Nah, it's okay. I'll get one couch and Xander will gets the other one.
Willow-You made Xander sleep on the couch?
Buffy-He offered to sleep on the couch.
Willow-Oh. Does the idea make you uncomfortable?
Buffy-What idea?
Willow-Sleeping in the same bed with me.
Buffy-What? Oh...no! It doesn't bother me that you're, you know, gay or anything. You're my friend and if I did sleep in the same bed with you it wouldn't be a big deal, you know, 'cause we're friends. It's not unlikely for friends to share a bed. They do it all the time at sleep overs.
Willow-Are you sure?
Buffy-Yeah. I'll sleep on the couch. I don't mind letting you have my room to yourself. You're my best friend and a guest. Those two things make it easier for me to sacrifice my room.
Willow-Sacrifice?
Buffy-Okay...maybe that was a bad word choice.
Willow-So, you're positive that you want to sleep on that uncomfortable couch?
Buffy-Yes, it's not that uncomfortable. I've slept on it before...not purposely.
Willow-Suit yourself.
{Willow walks over to the bed and sits down. Buffy joins her.}
Buffy-I'm glad you decided to stop by for a visit. I know I've mentioned it before, but I really mean it. It's good to see you, Will.
Willow-Ditto. It's good to see you, Buffy.
Buffy-Well, I'll let you unpack.
Willow-No. I mean, there's plenty of time for that later.
Scene 6
{Xander and Dawn are downstairs on the couch.}
Xander-You think those two are gonna come down any time soon?
Dawn-I don't know. They're probably going to be up there a while. They have a lot to catch up on.
Xander-Yeah, but Willow's our friend too. Doesn't she want to catch up with us? More than she did earlier?
Dawn-I'm sure she does. It's just that...she and Willow are close. Like best friends close.
Xander-Hello, she was my best friend before she was Buffy's best friend.
Dawn-Are you jealous?
Xander-Jealous? Me? No...
Dawn-Then why are you so upset about Willow appearing to want to spend more time with Buffy right now?
{Xander pauses a while before he responds.}
Xander-Because I'm jealous.
{Xander sighs.}
Dawn-Told ya.
Xander-It's just...she comes here to Rome to visit with us and the first person she wants to really catch up with is Buffy.
Dawn-I'm sure she wants to catch up with you too, Xander.
Xander-I guess.
Dawn-Gosh!
Xander-What?
Dawn-I didn't think you'd be like this.
Xander-Be like what?
Dawn-Like this. Acting like a little boy and being jealous because Willow is talking to Buffy before she is to you.
Xander-Little boy? You think I'm acting like a little boy?
Buffy-Well, yeah.
Xander-I am so not!
Dawn-Are too!
Xander-Am not!
Dawn-You are!
Xander-Am not!
Dawn-Yes, you are!
Xander-I am not!
Dawn-You so are!
Xander-No, I'm not!
Dawn-Big time!
Xander-Am not!
{Willow and Buffy walk downstairs and exchange glances.}
Buffy-Are you guys okay?
Xander-Fine.
Dawn-Right as rain. Whatever that means...
{Willow stars to laugh.}
Willow-You guys sounded like two little kids arguing over something stupid.
Buffy-And pointless.
Dawn-Told ya you were acting like a little boy.
Xander-She said "two little kids." That means she was saying you were acting like a little kid too.
Buffy-Maybe we should go back upstairs and let you two work this out alone.
Xander-No! I mean, we're done.
Dawn-So done.
Xander-Yeah.
Dawn-It's over.
Buffy-Good.
Willow-Buffy, where's the bathroom?
Buffy-Oh, right. Go into the kitchen, take a left, go through the small hall, and it's the first door on your right.
Willow-Thanks.
{Willow quickly gets up and walks into the kitchen.}
Scene 7
{Joyce and Andrew are standing in the basement. With them is the woman we saw being attacked earlier on.}
Joyce-So, Chauncey, you know who you're supposed to go after right?
Chauncey{The woman}-Yes, I do. The Slayer.
{Chauncey pulls up the corners of her lips into a snarl and lets out a short growl.}
Andrew-When are we going to send him after her?
Joyce-We will send him after Buffy tonight.
Chauncey-That is good. Tonight I will be myself again.
Joyce-Yes, you will.
Chauncey-I will crush. I will kill the Slayer.
{Joyce rolls her eyes.}
Joyce-I highly doubt that you will kill her tonight.
Chauncey-You saying I can't kill?
Joyce-You do not know the Slayer like I do. She is powerful, strong, and extremely resourceful. You cannot kill her on your first attempt. However, I have faith that you will get close to killing her on your second. If you concentrate, you can learn a lot about Buffy from your first fight.
Chauncey-Fine.
{Joyce smiles.}
Joyce-I just love it when they listen to me, but sometimes I wish they wouldn't so I could use a little violence.
{Joyce looks at Andrew.}
Andrew-Yeah...well...um...don't look at me. You can't just take out your...urges on me.
Joyce-Who says I can't?
Andrew-Me.
Joyce-Well, it does not matter what you want. It matters what I want and you work for me. It's not like I'm going to fire you or anything...I need you.
Andrew-It doesn't really seem like you do. You just use me for your own needs.
Joyce-Duh, that's what I'm talking about, Andrew.
Chauncey-Where do you want me to go to find this Slayer?
Joyce-She'll be patrolling tonight at the cemetery. Go to her there.
Chauncey-The cemetery?
Joyce-Yes, the cemetery. Are you afraid of ghosts or something?
Chauncey-I am not afraid of anything.
Joyce-Yeah, yeah. That's what all demons say. Just go and come back as soon as you can.
Andrew-What if Buffy kills him?
Joyce-She won't...Chauncey will be too strong for her to kill tonight. She'll need to go home and do some research before she will be able to kill him. She'll fight him for a while, discover he is too strong for her to fight alone, and will run back to her house.
Andrew-How do you know?
Joyce-I've been studying her. I'm starting to know her very well. Just trust me on this.
Andrew-Okay.
Chauncey-Goodbye.
Joyce-Adios.
{Chauncey growls again and exits the basement. Camera fades out.}
Scene 8
{It's dark and we're in the cemetery. Buffy is walking alone with a stake in hand. She's alert and ready for anything to jump out at any time. Suddenly, there is a faint, yet noticeable, sound of footsteps. Buffy turns around Chauncey comes out from the shadows.}
Chauncey-Slayer.
Buffy-So you know me. Cool. I've been in Rome for a short while and demons are starting to learn who I am. I guess this is what being a celebrity is like. So, what are you? Vampire? Demon? Witch?
Chauncey-Something evil.
Buffy-Wow. Couldn't have guessed that one. I know you're evil and therefore, I'm gonna have to kill you.
Chauncey-I'd like to see you try.
{Chauncey smiles and then changes into a dog with glowing eyes.}
Buffy-Oh come on, you're a werewolf or something?
{Buffy rolls her eyes.}
Chauncey-Not quite.
{Chauncey lunges at Buffy and gets on top of her. Buffy struggles beneath of him to get free. She takes her stake and stabs Chauncey's leg. Chauncey yelps, but does not get off of Buffy. Buffy beats Chauncey with her fists, but he still doesn't budge. Buffy looks around her and sees a large rock. She picks it up with her free hand and bangs Chauncey on the head with it. Chauncey falls over. Buffy gets up and runs off.}
Scene 9
{Buffy, Xander, Dawn, and Willow are all in the living room and look as if they're holding a meeting.}
Buffy-I was attacked by some dog thing last night.
Xander-Come on, Buffy. A dog? We've dealt with those before. We call them werewolves.
Buffy-I know that, Xander.
Willow-Well, was it a werewolf then?
Buffy-I thought so, but...there was something different about it.
Dawn-Like how?
Buffy-Like...I don't know. There was a woman who sneaked up on me and she turned into this dog. I said "Oh, come on! So you're a werewolf or something?" And it spoke back to me. It said "Not quite." I don't remember Oz talking when it was wolfed out.
Willow-That does sound a little odd, but there are many different types of werewolves.
Dawn-There are?
Willow-Well, sure.
Buffy-I don't think it was a werewolf. It was...so much stronger and it's eyes glowed. It felt like something pure evil. Like something straight from Hell.
Xander-Well, werewolves are kinda evil.
Buffy-But they aren't straight from Hell, are they?
Dawn-Are you saying you thing it's like a Hell beast or something?
Buffy-Yeah. It kinda reminded me of those things that showed up at prom. Hey, maybe Andrew could tell us something.
Dawn-He didn't do the Hell beasts, remember? He did the those flying monkeys at the school play. His brother, Tucker, did the Hell beasts.
Willow-You actually remember that?
Dawn-Well, he would bring it up so much....
Buffy-Yeah, I know Tucker did those, but Andrew was his brother.
Xander-So, we hunt down Andrew?
Buffy-I don't know....Willow, could you pull up anything on the Internet about Hell beasts?
Willow-I'll try.
{Willow gets up and walks over to her laptop. She lifts the top up and begins to type in information.}
Willow-Well, a lot of answers are here, we just have to look for them.
Buffy-What do you mean exactly?
Willow-The search brought up 5.375 results.
Buffy-Oh.
Dawn-That's a lot.
Xander-I can't believe I'm saying this, but do you think that it might be...a good idea to ask Andrew about some things?
Willow-I'm not sure. We don't even know where he is.
Dawn-Yeah and even when we do see him he's acting werid, you know, more weird than usual.
Buffy-Even if we find him, he may not even be up for giving us any info, but, if we can't find anything on the Internet we just might have to go to him.
Willow-Right, so that doesn't put a lot of pressure on me.
{She types some more on the computer and clicks something with the mouse. Her eyes quickly scan across the computer.}
Xander-So, does the first result let us know anything?
Willow-Nope...not anything that we didn't know already.
Buffy-Just keep looking. There has to be something right?
Willow-Maybe we need to be more specific.
Buffy-I already told you everything I know.
Willow-Yeah, and I'm not saying you have to say any more. I'm just saying that searching for hell beasts is kinda...general.
Dawn-You think it would be easier to narrow down the searches if we knew somethign else about what Buffy saw?
Willow-Yep.
Xander-Well, can anyone think of anything?
Buffy-I'm drawing a blank.
Dawn-We could call Giles. Maybe he knows something.
Buffy-I don't think that's a good idea. He's pretty much...well...the last time I called him he seemed like...he didn't really want to be involved in the demon stuff any more. I mean, he's been in it even longer than we have. He was happy to talk to me and everything he just wants us to work on our own for a while. He has faith in us. But, if we ever really reallly really need him for something bigger, I'm sure he'd be here in a split second.
Willow-Right...so no Giles then.
Buffy-Not at the moment. After a few more searches, if we still come up empty handed, we'll turn to Andrew, and then Giles.
Dawn-I hope we find something.
Xander-Ditto.
