Cassandra: Part Two

Sunnydale library, the next day:

“Hey Giles,” said Buffy as she entered the library.

Giles looked up from the book that he was looking at. “Oh, hello Buffy. How was patrolling last night?”

“That’s what I need to talk to you about. A new vampire is in town, a woman. Her name is Cassandra.”

“Cassandra. I recognize that name. She was mentioned in a watcher’s diary when I was researching Spike.” Giles got up from where he was sitting, went in his office, and came out with a book. “Did she confront you last night?”

“I was in the cemetery patrolling.” Buffy began. “Angel was with me. Next thing I know, this woman pops out in front of us. She knew Angel. In fact, she actually referred to him as Angelus.”

“Did Angel recognize her?” Giles asked while he was leafing through a large book.

“Yes, he knew her. Also, something else happened. She was telling me to get away from Angel. It was almost like she was trying to protect me from him.”

“Ah, here it is.” Giles put the book down to show Buffy. “These diaries mention a vampire named Cassandra that traveled around with Spike in the late eighteen hundreds. Actually, they refer to Cassandra as the leader of that particular vampire coven that Spike was in.”

Buffy rolled her eyes. “Oh great, Spike’s got a friend in town.”

“Not just a friend. She was leader over an entire coven. Very few female vampires rise to that level. She must be fairly powerful.” Giles then looked up from the book. “You said that Angel knew her. What did he tell you about her?”

“Nothing, he didn’t want to talk about it. He told me to be very careful, and that she was very dangerous. I tried to ask about her, but he just left.”

“Well, I will do some research and find out more about her. It may take some time.”

“Thanks Giles, I have to go.” Buffy said as she left the library. Right outside the library Buffy met up with Willow and Xander. “Hey guys, what’s up?”

“Hey Buffy, how did it go last night?” Willow asked.

The trio started down the hall. “Things were quiet, no slaying. But, there is a new vampire in town.” Replied Buffy.

“New vampire. Who was he?” Xander asked.

“She, actually. It was a woman. That’s not all, she knows Angel. She called him Angelus.”

“So, it’s someone from his past?” Asked Willow.

“Yeah, I guess. The weird thing is that he won’t talk to me about her. I tried to ask him what he knew about her, but he just told me to be very careful. Then he left.”

Xander smiled. “Is that a hint of jealousy I hear in your voice?”

“I’m not jealous, Xander.” Willow and Xander looked at Buffy in a way that made it clear that they did not believe her. “Really, I’m not.” Buffy looked away not wanting to meet their gaze. “OK, I guess I am a little. Angel was just acting too weird about her. Also, it doesn’t help that she is beautiful.”

“What does she look like?” Willow asked.

“Dark hair, dark eyes, incredible figure; I could go on.” The gang made it to the lounge area and sat down. “Also, there’s more. This vampire, Cassandra is her name, acted really strange. Me and Angel were patrolling the cemetery. Next thing I know she jumps out at us. The strange thing was that she yelled at me to get away from Angel. You sort of had to be there, but it almost seemed as though she was protecting me from him.”

“That’s weird.” Xander said.

“Yeah, I know. She didn’t even fight me. I did attack her, but all she did was defense moves to block my attack, quite well actually. She did grab me and throw me pretty hard. However, it was almost like she didn’t want to hurt me. She just wanted me to stop attacking. Angel fought her a little, then she ran away.” Buffy then looked at her friends. “I don’t know what’s going on. I wish Angel would tell me something.”

“Maybe she’s an old girlfriend.” Said Xander.

“Maybe, that would explain why he won’t talk to me about her.”

Willow then asked, “Did you tell Giles? Maybe he knows something.”

“I did, and I found out something interesting. According to an old watcher diary that Giles used to research Spike, Cassandra and him used to hang out. She was leader over a coven of vampires that included Spike. That diary was from the late eighteen hundreds. Giles said it was very rare for a female vampire to rise to that level of power in a coven. She must be strong.” Just then the bell rang signaling the beginning of classes.

Willow, Xander, and Buffy got up. “Hey Buffy,” Willow said. “Everything should be all right .”

“Thanks Will.”

Xander asked, “Are you patrolling tonight?”

“Yeah, I am. I got to go. See you guys later.”

Cassandra’s hotel room:

It was around 5:00pm when Cassandra awoke. She had not slept well. Her dreams were filled with images from her past, images that she wanted to forget but could not. Whatever god that existed would not let her forget about what she had done. Tonight, the dreams mostly centered around Angelus and all the horrible things that they both did in Europe. Cassandra put the dreams out of her mind and got out of bed. She had to go to the Bronze and do more business. Then she hoped she could find the Slayer. [ She shouldn’t be too hard to find. She will probably patrol tonight. ]

Cassandra finished her business at the Bronze quickly. After a few hours of walking around Sunnydale she finally saw the Slayer. She was alone this time. [ I need to talk to her without her attacking me. I won’t sneak up on her. I’ll be as non threatening as I can be. ] Cassandra approached the park where the slayer was patrolling. “Hello.” Cassandra said with a friendly tone.

Buffy turned around quickly and immediately recognized who was approaching her. “Well, I was wondering if I would ever see you again. I should have known.” Buffy raised her stake.

Cassandra stopped walking once she was about ten feet from the Slayer. “This is not what you think. I’m not here to hurt you.”

Buffy rolled her eyes. “Then what do you want?”

Cassandra smiled. “To talk to you. Preferably without you trying to stake me.”

Buffy lowered her stake. “Okay, stay right where you are and talk. Get any closer and you’re history.”

“So, you’re the slayer. What’s your name?”

“You mean you don’t know already? You’re old buddy Spike didn’t tell you?”

“Spike? How do you know Spike?” Cassandra was confused.

“Him and a group of vampires attacked my school; but I’m sure you already know that. I don’t believe for a second that you didn’t know that he was in Sunnydale.”

[ Damn it! Can this trip get any worse? First I find out Angelus is in town, now I find out Spike is here also. ] “Well, I didn’t know. I haven’t seen Spike in many years. However, you’ve got more problems than just Spike.”

“And what are they?”

“First tell me your name. I assume you have one.”

“My name is Buffy.”

“All right Buffy, how well do you know Angelus? That was the guy you were with last night. I assume you know he’s a vampire.”

Buffy rolled her eyes. “I don’t have to tell you anything about Angel, and I am not going to. I don’t know what game this is, but I am not playing.”

“Angel? He calls himself Angel now?” Cassandra shook her head. “Whatever, Angelus, or Angel as you call him, is one of the most vicious vampires ever. I don’t know what game he is playing with you, but he will destroy you.”

Buffy just stood there with a disbelieving look on her face. “You are giving me warnings on who I should hang out with? I don’t believe this! It is none of your business. There’s a lot you obviously don’t know. So, I’m going to tell you this once. Get out of town now.”

“I’m no threat to you. I will get out of town when my business here is finished. I am not your problem, Angelus is your problem. I’m just trying to warn you before Angelus does something really nasty to you.” As soon as she said that, Cassandra turned around and left the cemetery. [ I hope that was enough. I hope that I planted a few doubts in her head about Angelus. Hopefully, that will save her life. ]

When Cassandra was about one hundred yards away from the cemetery she heard something in an alleyway that she passed. She looked into the dark alleyway and saw someone watching her. Cassandra stopped, “Who’s there?”

Angel emerged from the darkness of the alleyway. “Hello Cassandra.”
