Sarah was born in New York City on April 14, 1977. Eating in a local restaurant, she was discovered by an agent when she was 4 years old. Soon after, she was making her first TV appearance, on an episode of "Guiding Light" where she played the part of a young flower girl. These Vidcaps are from her first TV role.

She began a career of appearing in TV commercials, and attained some notoriety at the age of five when she was named as a defendant in a lawsuit by McDonald's. In a Burger King ad she had said that McDonald's burgers were smaller than Burger King's. This led to problems in her personal life. At the time, McDonald's offered free meals to children on their birthdays. Many of her little friends celebrated their birthdays at McDonald's, but Sarah was not allowed to go to McDonald's, so she had to either decline the invitation or go in disguise. This was very traumatic for a child of five or six, and Sarah still has clear memories of those days. Sarah's first major role was playing the teenage Jacqueline Bouvier in "A Woman Named Jackie" in 1991. The show was a critical success, and brought new attention to the young actress.

On February 24th 1993 Sarah landed a role on the popular soap "All My Children", where she played Kendall Hart, who was originally thought to be Erica Kane's assistant, but the storyline later revealed that she was Erica's long-lost daughter who ended up raising hell for her mother. She was nominated for a daytime Emmy for her performance. Although she lost, she was nominated again and won for the category "Best Younger Actress." The day after her Emmy acceptance, Sarah made it public that she was going to leave the show and pursue fame in film or television.

Perhaps the biggest breakthrough of Sarah's career came in 1996 when Sarah was given the role of Buffy Summers in the popular television show, based on the movie by the same name, "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", the show didn't do very well in it's first season (it ranked 100th out of 107 programs in the Nielson ratings), but by the second season it shot up as high as 22, which is extremely high considering the show is on the WB network (which is not as popular as the major networks like NBC or ABC, etc.) making it the most popular show on the network.

During 1997 she became known to the cinema audience when she appeared in two movies, "I Know What You Did Last Summer", and "Scream 2". 1999 was a big year for Sarah. She had a small role in She's All That, where she met a young man named Freddie Prinze, Jr., and the leading role in Cruel Intentions and Simply Irresistible. In 2001, she had the lead role in Harvard Man, and began filming Scooby Doo 2002.

In 2003, after wrapping up her 7th season of "Buffy," Sarah flew back out to start filming Scooby Doo II, and continued her movie career with "The Grudge" and "Romantic Comedy."
