Giles: “Joyce, you mustn't blame yourself for her leaving.”
Joyce: “I don't. I blame you.”
She explains that Giles has been a big influence on her, guiding her, when Joyce didn’t even know who Buffy was, and had no say in this. The air seems to clear when Buffy returns.Later that year, Giles old friend Ethan Rayne returns to Sunnydale. He brings with him boxes of candy, that make adults feel they are teenagers again. Buffy and the Scooby gang are made to sell it, and sell large quantities to both Giles and Joyce. As teenagers, they are vastly different. Giles is a doesn’t-care-about-anything youth, while Joyce is desperately trying to be seen as cool. While showing off, Giles smashes a shop window in to get Joyce a coat. A police officer shows up and Giles knocks him unconscious, leaving Joyce and Giles alone. The spell eventually gets reversed.
Buffy: “At least I got to the two of you before you actually did something.”
Parker: Joyce: “Right”
Buffy: Giles: ”Indeed.”
At Christmas time, Joyce guilt trips Buffy into inviting Faith for dinner, as she will be lone. Buffy mentions Giles will be too.
Buffy: “What about Giles? I mean, he doesn't have any fam...”
Joyce: “No, I'm sure he's fine.”
Buffy: “We could at least ask him and see...”
Joyce: “He doesn't wanna spend Christmas Eve with a bunch of girls.”
Buffy is attacked by a demon, who scratches her on her hand. She gets ‘an aspect of the demon’ which turns out to be the power of telepathy.Joyce: “I've uh, I've got laundry…
Buffy: “Why are you...? You had sex with Giles? YOU HAD SEX WITH GILES?! “
Joyce: “It was the candy! We were teenagers!”
Buffy: “On the hood of a police car?”
Joyce: “I'll be downstairs. You feel better.”
Buffy: “TWICE!!”
