Buffy continues tutoring the Potential Slayers by bringing them to a demon bar and a crypt, where Buffy squares off against a vampire; meanwhile, Dawn discovers that she's a Potential Slayer.

With some help from Spike, Buffy attempts to teach the Potential Slayers the basics in how to defeat a vampire. During the mock battle, Spike injures himself, causing Buffy concern. The girls cannot help but notice chemistry between the pair. As the girls goof around in the basement of the Summers' house, Buffy throws a battle axe across the room, getting their attention.
She tells the girls that with the Uber-vampire defeated, the First and his followers are busy regrouping. Later, at school, Buffy counsels a girl named Amanda, who complains about a boy who keeps picking on her. But Buffy's mind is clearly elsewhere. Willow receives word about another Potential Slayer already living in Sunnydale. As Willow prepares a locating spell, Buffy heads out into the night with the girls and Spike. During their absence, Willow's magic summons an orange blob of smoke, which heads right for Dawn and pins her against the front door of the house. Dawn realizes that she's a Potential Slayer. Dawn has difficulty adjusting to the news and head upstairs. Anya tells the others that if Dawn does become the Slayer, it means she'll have a short and brutal life.

Meanwhile, Dawn looks in her bedroom mirror, and instead of seeing a Potential Slayer, she sees a scared young girl. She climbs out her bedroom window and runs off into the night. As part of the field trip, Buffy and Spike take the girls to a demon bar, where Buffy runs into Clem, who approaches the Potential Slayers and lets out a horrific scream. As Dawn walks by herself through a Sunnydale neighborhood, she encounters Amanda, who has some blood on her temple. Amanda describes how she was attacked by a vampire at the high school. Amanda managed to trap the creature in a room and then fled into the night. Dawn tells Amada that she can handle the situation, and the two head off in the direction of the high school. They make their way to the classroom, where Dawn flings open the door. The pair enter the room together, but the vampire has apparently escaped. Unbeknownst to them, the vampire is perched on the ledge of the doorframe, out of sight. Suddenly, the vampire drops to the floor and menaces Dawn and Amanda. The girls run to a corridor, where Dawn notices a fire extinguisher. She uses it to smash the vampire in the face. The pair then head for a nearby staircase.

Meanwhile, Buffy, Spike and the Potential Slayers take a tour of a crypt, where they happen upon the body of a young man. Buffy tells the others it's not a body, but leftovers. The dead man's head rises. Back at the high school, Dawn and Amanda barricade themselves in a classroom, shoving a desk against the door. The vampire begins forcing its weight against the door, causing the desk to slowly slide back. At the crypt, Buffy engages the now undead guy in hand-to-hand combat as the Potential Slayers observe. Meanwhile, back at the high school, the vampire smashes through the door and advances on Dawn, who slows him down by throwing chemicals at him. She then breaks a flagpole in half, creating a makeshift stake. She charges the vampire, but unfortunately goes wide and hits a wall. The vampire pins her to the ground.

Willow, Anya and Xander discover that Dawn crawled out her bedroom window. Concerned, Willow prepares a locator spell. Back at the high school, the vampire descends on Dawn. Suddenly, three Bringers charge into the room. They surround Amanda, unsheathing their ceremonial knives. Dawn then realizes that Amanda is the Potential Slayer, not her. Dawn distracts the Bringers by setting off the emergency sprinkler system. She and Amanda head for a nearby staircase, where they encounter Xander, Buffy and Spike. Buffy and the others engage the Bringers, and during the battle, Amanda lodges a jagged pole in the vampire's chest. The pole doesn't hit the heart, but moments later, as the vampire rushes towards Willow and Anya, it looses its footing and hits the ground, driving the wooden pole into its heart and turning it to dust. Buffy then uses one of the Bringer's ceremonial daggers to kill the three Bringers.

Back at the house, Dawn grapples with the idea that she's not a Potential Slayer. Xander tells her that it's hard sometimes being a normal person surrounded by witches and Slayers and demons. But he reminds her that she's back in the game, and she's choosing to fight the fight on her own.
