Buffy teaches the Potential Slayers a valuable lesson as she faces off against the Uber-vampire; Giles and Anya enter another dimension to consult a demon about defeating The First.

When Rona, a potential Slayer, steps off a bus in Sunnydale, several Bringers descend upon her, daggers in hand. Buffy springs into action, dispatching the Bringers in short order. Buffy then welcomes Rona to the Hellmouth. At the Summers' home, Willow and Potential Slayer Kennedy strike up a conversation about the sleeping arrangements, as Willow has given up her bed and taken a sleeping bag. It soon becomes apparent that Kennedy is from a very wealthy family. Kennedy asks Willow to use her magic to perform a trick, causing Willow to grow uncomfortable. Buffy escorts Rona back to the house, where she's introduced to the other Potential Slayers-Molly, Chloe, Vi and Eve-and Andrew, who is eventually released from the chair he's tied to. Buffy informs the group about the "welcoming committee" that greeted Rona at the bus station. Unfortunately, Giles is unable to provide a means for dispatching the First, as the Watchers' records are all he has to go on. Giles then mentions one remaining avenue of hope: Beljoxa's Eye, an oracle-like creature that exists in another dimension. But only a demon can
open the gateway to the oracle.

Meanwhile, Spike-who's strung-up by his arms inside a cave-tells the First that Buffy will come for him. Anya turns to Torg, an old demon boyfriend, for help in opening the dimension to Beljoxa's Eye. Torg slashes open the palm of his hand, recites a spell and tosses some blood into the center of an alleyway, causing a shimmering portal to open. Giles and Anya enter the vortex and come to face-to-face with Beljoxa's Eye, a cycloptic creature. Willow receives word from the underground that another Potential Slayer arrived in town several days ago and is staying at a local motel. Buffy tells the others she'll find the girl and bring her back to the house. During her absence, the other Potential Slayers train for combat.and speculate on their fates. Buffy and Xander locate the motel, break down the door and discover that the Potential Slayer has been murdered. Panicked, Buffy rushes back home and confronts Eve, whom she realizes is really the First. Buffy and Xander explain to the others that the real Eve is dead. Before she vanishes into thin air, Eve/The First threatens to unleash the Uber-vampire at sundown.

Meanwhile, Beljoxa's Eye tells Giles and Anya that a disruption unleashed The First.a disruption linked to the Slayer. Giles realizes that Buffy's return from death has somehow triggered the First's appearance. Anya concludes that the world would be better off had Buffy remained dead. Back at the house, Buffy prepares the group for the Uber-vampire's inevitable attack. As promised, The First unleashes the Uber-vampire at dusk. As Bringers surround the Summers' home to prevent the group from escaping, the Uber-vampire attacks. A hesitant Willow resorts to magic to create an invisible barrier around the house, temporarily slowing the Uber-vampire. But the creature proves incredibly powerful, and Willow is unable to keep the barrier up for long. Buffy instructs the rest of the group to flee the house. As the Potential Slayers, Andrew, Xander and the rest of the group make their way through the streets of Sunnydale, Buffy decides to stand and fight the creature on her own, giving the others more time to escape. She smashes a bottle of holy water in the Uber-vampire's face, temporarily stunning it. But the creature stops its attack and runs off in the direction of the Potential Slayers.

Xander escorts the Potential Slayers to an excavation pit at a construction site. Xander instructs everyone to spread out, and a short time later, the Uber-vampire makes its appearance. As the Uber-vampire closes in on the Potential Slayers, a bank of floodlights suddenly illuminates the area. One of the lights shines on Buffy, standing atop some cinder blocks, her arms folded, very much the hero. Buffy announces that she and the others lured the Uber-vampire to the site. In flashback, it is revealed that Buffy communicated with Willow and Xander telepathically back at the house, telling them she wanted to put on a show for the Potential Slayers in an effort to build their confidence. Buffy shoots the Uber-vampire with an arrow, which imbeds in its chest. The creature grabs Buffy by the throat and lifts her off her feet. Buffy grabs the arrow, breaks it in half and plunges the broken shaft into the Uber-vampire's eye. It releases Buffy, who grabs hold of some barbed wire. She uses the wire to decapitate the Uber-vampire, which explodes into dust. Buffy tells the Potential Slayers that the lesson has ended. Buffy then makes her way to the underground cavern, where she rescues Spike.
