In the cemetery mausoleum, Luke prepares to drain Buffy, but he burns his hand on the silver cross given to her by Angel. He jumps back, giving Buffy space to escape. She finds Xander and Willow under attack by vampires, comes to their rescue and is able to save them ‚ except for Jesse, who is taken by Luke and Darla to the Master.
As Luke and Darla describe their encounter with Buffy, the Master realizes that she is the Slayer and decides that Jesse will act as bait in a trap for Buffy.
Back at the school library, Giles and Buffy tell the somewhat terrified Xander and Willow what they need to know about the Slayer, vampires and demons. Both want to help, but Buffy rejects Xander¼s offer to help rescue Jesse, telling him it¼s her job. Willow, though, gets on the Internet and searches for information on the sewer systems and underground tunnels the vampires are using.
Buffy goes back to the mausoleum and encounters the dark man who¼d given her the silver cross. This time, he introduces himself as Angel and warns her not to go down there, giving her an alternate route.
As Buffy creeps inside the tomb, Xander shows up and stubbornly resists her urging him to go back, saying that he¼ll help her whether she likes it or not. They succeed in finding Jesse and run away from chasing vampire. Jesse leads them into a room with no way out and then turns into a vampire. Buffy throws him outside the room and bars the door. As the pursuing vampires try to break it down, Buffy and Xander escape through the vents and head back to the library. Giles and Willow have done some research and found out that the Harvest is a mass feeding which will allow the Master to break out of his tomb and take over the world of the living. The nascent Scooby group realizes that the Bronze is the perfect feeding groundä
As Luke is ritually anointed as the Vessel, the vampire whose feeding will strengthen the Master and allow him to break free, Buffy goes home to gather weapons and supplies. However, her mom chooses this very bad moment to ground her. Sighing, Buffy sneaks out of the house by her bedroom window. But Giles, Xander, Willow and herself get to the Bronze too late: Luke and several other vampires have already broken in and are feeding.
Buffy sneaks in through the roof and a catwalk, calls out to Luke just as he¼s about to drain Cordelia, and jumps down to the main floor to face him. As the Slayer and the vampire fight, Willow and Giles sneak people out through the back. Xander saves Cordelia from Jesse and accidentally stakes him. Buffy tricks Luke into thinking the sun has risen by throwing a stand through a window but it is only a lamp. It distracts him long enough for Buffy to turn him into dust, much to the displeasure of the Master, who in his underground tomb discovers he can¼t break through.
