-> Oakland SlayerCon 2004 Q&A Notes

James Marsters (Saturday)
By Kirsten

- Favorite (recent) book - “DaVinci Code”

- James was asked the 5 CDs he currently has in his stereo - Jet, Powderfinger (Aussie band), Norah Jones, Greenday, Tom Waits.

- His favorite foods: beef jerky, corn nuts, candy corn and Wheat Thins.

- Kirsten asked James about the “snarkiness” between Angel and Spike and if it was fun. According to James it was, in part because he and David have the same work philosophy - show up, read your lines, go home.

- James hated doing the nude scenes with Sarah, mostly because he was the only person who was nude and everyone else was wearing clothes. According to him, there was no one to commiserate with.

- James isn’t looking to do guest shots (his manager advised against it) but would be interested in a Law & Order-type show because the writing on Law & Order is so good.

- James likes living in LA more than he thought he would. James thinks that there are pockets of LA that are very good and very nice.

- James was asked about the Dresden files. He’s not sure that the production company is even aware of his name. James would turn down the role, though, if it were shot in Vancouver (he can’t be away from LA that long).

- James is still into music and may play some solo or ensemble shows at 14 Under (the bar in LA where Ghost of the Robot started playing) in the future.

- According to James, at the end of Buffy he had no idea that he would be asked to join the cast of Angel. Joss’s call came out of the blue but it was a no-brainer for James -- of course he wanted to join the cast of Angel.

- If Joss does another project and Joss wants James to participate, James is there - regardless of the size of the role. (This was in response to a question about a Spike-centered TV movie.)

- James was asked about casting Macbeth (any Buffyverse/Angelverse actors he’d like to join the production) and said any of them. James also said that he’s interested in having Natalie Portman in the show.

- James doesn’t want his son to choose acting as a career.

- James hates Julliard and thinks that most of the teachers suck the joy of acting out of the students.

- Someone asked James to recite several lines from the show as if Spike had been cast with a southern accent. James did a very old-time southern accent, something that you’d probably only hear in the most remote parts of Louisiana these days.

- James was asked about his first day on the set of Buffy. James said that the entire cast came out of their trailers to meet and greet him, which he thought was pretty fun. Then the first scene they shot was Spike stalking Buffy in the bar. After the first take the cast and crew went, “ooooooooooooooh,” because they were so impressed with James’s work. The director (John) kept taking shot after shot after shot and extending the production because he loved working with James. Unfortunately, the shoot went over time and over budget so the director wasn’t asked back.

- James had heard the pitch for “Smile Time” and thought the idea was brilliant and thought that they must do the episode. James was really psyched when he found out that the writer who pitched the idea (Ben Edlund) was the same guy who created “The Tick.” (James apparently likes the animated version of “The Tick” - thinks it’s wonderful.) James was also thrilled when David (Boreanaz) signed off on the script idea. James was a little bit worried about the animatronics because he thought there’d be lots of cables and stuff, so he was thrilled when they just wired puppetAngel to James and said “roll around on the floor a bit.” James also said that the puppeteers kept razzing everyone on the set during the whole shoot.

- James demonstrated Spike’s signature “panther walk” and admitted that he stole the idea from Malcolm McDowell in “Cat People.” Also, in “Beneath You” he took the ‘cane movements’ from Malcolm McDowell in “The Clockwork Orange.”
