Part One
Angel and Buffy are in love. They aren't two young, free spirited teenagers. They aren't even the same species. They are born enemies. This is their story...
Angel and Buffy first met in a dark alley. Buffy was on her way to the Bronze, a night club, when she sensed someone following her. She began running, only to find herself at a dead end. She grabbed onto a horizontal pole crossing above the alley and swung herself upside down. When the Stranger passed beneath the pole, she swung around and kicked his back, flipping him over (you could say he literally fell head over heels for her). She pinned him to the ground with her foot and got her first look at the man who had been following her.
Angel managed to gasp out, "Is there a problem ma'am?"
Buffy replied, “Yeah there’s a problem, why are you following me?”
Angel said, “I know what you’re thinking, but don’t worry, I don’t bite.”
After a brief pause, Buffy let him up off the ground. He brushed himself off saying, “Truth is, I thought you’d be taller, or bigger muscles and all that.” As he rubbed his neck in pain he continued, “You’re pretty spry though.”
Buffy, not in the mood for conversing, asked him, “What do you want?”
Angel replied, “The same thing you do.”
Buffy shrugged and asked, “OK, what do I want?”
Angel leaned closer and replied, “To kill them, to kill them all.”
Buffy, in turn, quipped, “Sorry, that’s incorrect, but you do get this lovely watch and a years supply of turtle wax,” then she became serious, “what I want is to be left alone.”
Buffy began walking away, as Angel said, “Do you really think that’s an option anymore?” Buffy turned to him as he said, “You’re standing at the mouth of Hell, and It’s about to open. Don’t turn your back on this, you’ve got to be ready.”
He pulled a small, black box out of his pocket.
Buffy replied, “What for?”
Angel said, “for the Harvest.” Then he tossed her the box.
Buffy caught the box and asked, “Who are you?”
Angel replied, “Let’s just say, I’m a friend.” He began to walk away.
Buffy called after him, “Yeah, well maybe I don’t want a friend.”
Angel turned briefly, saying, “I didn’t say I was yours.”
Angel walked away, leaving a very confused Buffy. She opened the box he had thrown her. Inside was a beautiful silver cross.
Later, as Buffy was discussing her encounter with Giles, she described Angel as, “This...guy. Dark, Gorgeous, in an annoying sort of way.”
Giles asked her if he said anything else besides the Harvest, “Yeah, something about the mouth of Hell. I really didn’t like him.”
The next day, Buffy returned to a Mausoleum in search of the entryway to the sewers. As she was inspecting a locked doorway, Angel appeared behind her.
Without turning around, Buffy said, “I don’t suppose you’ve got a key on you?”
Angel replied, “They really don’t like me dropping in.”
Buffy turned to face him, “Why not?”
Angel replied with a slight grin on his face, “They really don’t like me.”
Buffy quipped, “How could that possibly be?” With a look of resignation she asked him, “OK, look. If your going to be popping up with this cryptic wiseman act, could you at least tell me your name?”
Angel replied softly, “Angel.”
Buffy said, “Angel...pretty name.”
As she turned towards the entryway once more as if to go through it, Angel stepped forward with a look of slight panic.
“Don’t...go down there.”
Buffy replied, “Deal with my going.”
Angel said to her, “You shouldn’t be putting yourself at risk. Tonight...Is the Harvest. Unless you can prevent it, the master walks.”
Buffy replied, “Well if this Harvest thing is such a suck fest, why don’t you stop it?”
Angel quipped, laughing, “Because I’m afraid.”
Buffy looked at him for a moment, then turned towards the door and kicked it in, breaking the lock. Angel looked surprised then laughed.
Still laughing, he said, “They’ll be expecting you.”
Buffy stepped closer and, now serious, stated, “I’ve got a friend down there, or at least a potential friend. Do you know what it’s like to have a friend?”
Angel paused with a sad expression on his face. When Buffy realized he had no answer she told him apologetically,
"That wasn’t supposed to be a stumper."
After another long pause Angel said, "When you hit the tunnels, head east towards the school. That’s where you’re likely to find them.”
Buffy replied, “You going to wish me luck?”
Angel looked at her, not saying anything. Buffy turned and went into the entryway. When she was out of earshot Angel whispered, “Good Luck.”
Buffy went on to stop the Master from getting out of the Hellmouth and stopped the Harvest. As two vampires ran away from the slayer, Angel came out of the shadows and said to himself, “She did it. I’ll be damned.”
