Synopsis
The Short: Duel stories in this episode, one set in the past and one
in the present. In the past Angel and Darla celebrate his birthday in 1898
by killing a gypsy girl. Later on Darla discovers the gypsies have cursed
him with a soul and she rejects him. In the present, Faith has come to Los
Angeles
and Wolfram & Hart lawyers Lee Mercer, Lindsey McDonald and Lilah Morgan
figure it is the best way to deal with the local vampire detective who
keeps getting in their way. They hire Faith to take out Angel, and she
gleefull starts to tease him. Eventually torturing Wesley to get Angel
''in the game''. They get in a big fight, but Angel refuses to kill her. It
ends with Faith having a breakdown in an alley, revealing how she is trying
to get herself killed because of how evil she is and Angel giving her a hug.
The Long: After a lengthy ''Previously on Angel and Buffy The
Vampire Slayer'' segment (see Continuity #1), a gang member walks into a demon trap, but
Angel and Wesley show up looking for the man, Danny Marquez, and behead the
three demons. At the bus station Faith gets off the bus and mugs a man for
his wallet and keys, brutally beating him (see Reference
#1).
In Borsa, Romania 1898, Angel and Darla celebrate his birthday (see Reference
#2). Darla
has a present for him, a gypsy girl gift wrapped. After frightening her
Angel lifts the girl's dress and drinks from her leg. Back in the present Angel roughs up the guy
he saved last night and tries to convince him to tell the truth. Outside his
office Cordelia and Wesley argue over whether the guy will do the right
thing. Cordelia insists he can't be changed (see Reference
#3). Flash to a night club where Faith is dancing up a storm. She moves
in on another women's boyfriend and starts fights. Seemingly uncaring about
the world around her, she just keeps dancing. In a court Wolfram & Hart
lawyer Lindsey McDonald argues to get a client released due to the lack of
witnesses (see Reference
#4). Angel walks in with the guy he saved and the lawyer is shaken. At
the law offices the lawyer tries to explain to his boss how he couldn't
foresee Angel interfering. Lee Mercer walks in saying he may have a solution
to their Angel problem. Out in the hall Lee is approached by Lilah
Morgan saying she knew he came up with the idea of using Faith to stop
Angel (see Reference
#5). She says she knows where to find Faith and insists on contacting her.
At Angel Investigations Cordelia talks to a client about a divorce case on
the phone. She tries to turn it down until she learns how much money is
involved. Angel and Wesley walk in and tell her about their success. Wesley
and Angel worry Wolfram & Hart will try to retaliate. Outside the club Lilah
has picked up Faith. She thinks Lilah is putting the moves on her and plans
to rob her, but then Lilah knows her name and makes her an offer. They get
in a limo with Lee.
In 1898 Darla returns home to find Angel cowering in the corner of the
room, going on about how some people scream when you kill them, some don't.
She wonders if he is playing a game, but realizes something is wrong. Angel
says for all the people he killed in all the years he's been a vampire,
you wouldn't think he could remember every single one. Darla worries he
found someone else, then she realizes a spell has been cast on him giving
him a soul. Darla rejects Angel, and forces him to leave. In the present
Faith meets with the lawyers of Wolfram & Hart at their offices. They make
an offer, saying they will get her off from the charges for murder she is
under if she will kill Angel. She insists on getting money for the job too.
After Lee pisses her off, she brutally beats his face into a desk.
Angel, Wesley and Cordelia are on their way to meet with the divorce client,
and she breaks it to them what the case is about. They aren't happy to
be doing a divorce case (see Reference #5). As they are
talking Faith shows up and fires an
arrow at Angel, which he catches in the air. She walks off as the others
stand there stunned to see her out of a coma. At the office Angel gets
off the phone with Rupert Giles. He says Faith left Sunnydale about a week
ago. Wesley is upset Rupert didn't tell him his former charge was awake.
Angel wants Wesley and Cordelia to help him track her, then tells them to
hide until he takes care of her. Wesley protests, but Angel makes it clear
he doesn't want them in the way. Wesley argues that they should try to help
Faith, but Angel reminds him how Wesley himself ruined that chance when he
tried to take Faith to the Watcher's Council last time. Later on Angel is
checking his weapons when he hears someone upstairs. He goes up and sees
Faith standing in the sunlight near a window. Faith takes out a gun and
throws it to him, saying she is giving him one chance. He immediately
shoots her in the leg, but the bullet is a blank. Angel throws the gun
back to Faith. Faith teases that if he kills her he might find it so pleasurable
he could lose his soul again. She gives him an ''open invitation''
to come after her. She says is he doesn't kill her she will kill him and
she shoots him with the gun, the other bullets weren't blank (see Reference #7). Faith jumps
out the window. At Wolfram & Hart Angel shows up in a suit trying to fit in.
After playing the part of a lawyer and managing to say nothing that tips
his hand, he makes his way to the elevator. In Lindsey McDonald's office
Angel starts to look through the desk, when Lindsey walks in. He denies
knowing anything about Faith. Lindsey tells him that magical barriers
in the offices inform them the moment a vampire walks in. A
security guard tries to jump Angel, but Angel easily disarms and knocks him
out. Lindsey says the whole occurrence is being video taped. Angel leaves.
At Cordelia's apartment Wesley and Cordelia show up to pick up a few things.
Dennis tries to keep them out, but Cordelia scolds him and he leaves.
Faith walks out of the bedroom, saying he can use them to make Angel fight
harder. Wesley tries to help her, but she knocks Cordelia out (see Reference #8). Wesley
gets in one good punch before Faith takes him out too.
In 1898 a ragged Angel wanders the streets at night. He approaches a group
of people and tries to bite a woman, the men jump Angel and they fight in an
alley. He eventually beats them, attacks the woman and starts to bite her. In
the present Angel walks in at Cordelia's place and finds her knocked out.
Wesley is not there. In Faith's apartment, she tortures and teases Wesley
(see Reference #9 & Cool Quotes #1).
At Cordelia's place Angel and Cordelia go over the crimes with descriptions that
match Faith's. They figure out Faith may have gotten the house keys of her
first victim and where he lives. At Faith's place she sits in the window and
drops a bloody piece of glass. Wesley is bleeding. As Faith goes on she
prepares a lighter and a spray can to start a new torture for Wesley. Angel
breaks in the door and Faith is happy to see him.
In 1898 Angel walks off, unable to bring himself to drain the woman. In the
present Faith and Angel talk for a few minutes as she holds Wesley at knife
point, then he goads her into dropping Wesley and attacking him. They fight
all over the apartment. They fall from the window to an alley below, where
the fight continues. Faith insists on how bad she is as Wesley works free of
his bonds. It starts to rain. Wesley finds a knife and goes to join Angel.
By the time Wesley arrives in the alley Faith has broken down, wanting Angel
to kill her. Faith cries in his arms and Wesley
drops the knife.
Creature Feature
The first monsters we see are three unnamed demons who are sent to kill the
gangbanger. They are malformed humanoid monsters that are somewhat similar
to the creatures from the 1984 horror film C.H.U.D.
We see the return of the law firm Wolfram & Hart, and for the first time a
number of their lawyers are back from old episodes. Lindsey McDonald was
Russell Winters' lawyer in City Of, Lee Mercer was Tony Papazian's lawyer in
Sense And Sensitivity, and Lilah Morgan was the lawyer who tried to purchase
Angel in The Ring. We learn that the Wolfram & Hart offices have mystical
barriers that warn them when vampires enter, and have video recorders in
their offices.
Faith is of course a Vampire Slayer and a character from Buffy The Vampire
Slayer. Although she plays the part of the ''monster'' for most of
the episode, she ends up being the one Angel has to save.

Points Of View
Mathew:
Not a bad episode, it ties up plots from so many old episodes it's hard
to count. I liked seeing all the Wolfram & Hart lawyers from older episodes
together. I do think there should have been more of Dennis. He gave up too
easily. The appearance of Darla was a pleasant surprise, and I did notice
the subtle parallels between Faith and Angel. Finding out how Darla was at
fault for Angel's curse shed new light on her actions in Angel. She lost her
love and blamed herself for it. I'm looking forward to seeing Angel and
Buffy get together and NOT be all lovey next ep.
