Remember Me (1/1)
by Samantha McCullah
The minute he buried the knife in her stomach I knew she was dead. No
mortal could survive near disembowlment not even a Slayer. What I couldn't
believe was that he'd actually done it. The rat bastard, my sire, killed
the love of his life.
As she fell to the ground with a look of utter betrayl on her face, I
knew I had to do something. Something...human within me ordered me to
stop him. So I stood up out of the chair I'd been confined to the past
several months and raised my arms; I hit Angel's neck with every ounce
of fustration, anger, and brute vampire strength in my body.
I felt the bones snap as my fists impacted with the back of his neck,
and he tumbled to the ground with a grunt of pain. I stepped over his
body and made my way to hers. When I got there, I thought she was
already dead, and that thing inside me that was still human screamed.
Then she opened her eyes to stare up at me in confusion and pain.
"Spike?" she whispered weakly.
*Find myself all alone
In darkness without you
Now I can't turn away
From what I must do*
"Slayer," the word came out in a rush of breath I didn't realise I'd been
holding as I fell to my knees next to her. I pulled her head into my lap
gently, trying, for once, not to hurt her.
"Hurts so much," she commented.
"I know," I whispered. I smoothed the hair back from her face, searching
for words to console her. "You're going to be alright," I offered, refusing
to meet her eyes.
"No, I'm not," she laughed bitterly; the laugh quickly turned into a grimace
of pain. "Does dying always hurt this much?" she asked in complete innocence.
I looked...everywhere but at her. I couldn't bear to see the pain in her eyes.
"Slayer, If I could make it stop...." I trailed off, knowing it wouldn't do
any good. I knew she was dying. Slowly. Painfully.
*You know I'd give my life for you
More than words can say
I've shown you how to love someone
I know you'll find a way*
"Spike?" she asked softly, her voice breaking in pain. I finally looked at
her sweat-covered face. "Why did you s,stop him?" she grimaced.
"I don't know, pet," I sighed, "I just don't know." She nodded slowly.
"Spike, will you do me a favor?" she asked.
"Anything, love," I replied before I could stop myself.
"Remember me?"
*Say goodbye
Close your eyes
Remember me
Walk away
The sun remains
Remember me*
"Always," I whispered. <What in bloody hell is wrong with me?> Her smile
eliminated any doubts I had. "Slayer," I began, as she coughed, a line of
blood trickling out of the corner of her mouth. She was close. I took a
deep breath I didn't need. "Slayer, I...." Before I could finish, her eyes
glazed over and she grew still in my arms.
"God," I breathed, praying to a being I knew wouldn't hear me. "Slayer?"
I whispered futily as I cradled her body to my chest.
I rose to my feet still holding her rapidly cooling body in my arms, and I
stared down at her beautiful face. <She's sleeping,> I tried desperately to
console myself. I felt a tear working its way down my cheek, but I fought
against the rest of them, forcing myself not to cry.
I turned to where I'd left Angel, only to find him gone. I growled low
in my throat and felt my face turn into that of my demon.
*Close your eyes...
Say goodbye...
Remember me
Say you will*
"I will, Slayer," I promised, still staring at the vacant patch of
concrete where Angel had been.
"I promise this: He will die for this. I will rip his heart out and
eat it." I started walking away from the alley we'd been in. "But
first, I'm gonna rip his tongue out just to hear him whistle an
apology.
"I promise."
*Say goodbye
Remember me*
